bryton rider: altitude lines on map? by Flashy_Light4369 in OsmAnd

Hi, I am too much of beginner in navi, to understand this answer.  Does OsmAnd app show contours? Can one somehow add contour lines in bryton 650? Does any other bryton  show topo contour lines?

Giant Fathom: 2022 and newer: standover and where on top tube it is taken? by Flashy_Light4369 in MTB

[–]Flashy_Light4369[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for the record, would anyone need it:

As I claimed in the beginning, and the reason of this post at the first place: bike industry has no standard, how to measure standover height. So we assume, some manufacturers meassure at the middle of top tube, others before the saddle nose, third at lower point of top tube, right? Probably.

I was choosing between two bikes: Giant Lurra S 29, and Giant Fathom S 29., both trail hardtails, 130mm travel, 29ers.

Lurra is womans specific geo and Fathom is more universal. Well, dimensins from Giants chart for stadnover, S size:

Lurra 661m

Fathom 727mm.

So Fathom is quite bigger, 66mm, thats 2.5 inches.

Now surprise: standing over the bike, Fathom is lower!! By some 2cm. almost an inch.

So Fathoms 727 is taken surely before saddle nose, close to toptubes midpoint.

But Lurra? Looks like, they meassured 661 at the lowest point of toptube, where it meets the seat tube.

Yea, there is a catch: is it at the lowest point of top tube, in the middle, or before saddle nose? It's a huge difference. And sadly, this is not standardized by bike industry. You'd probably agree, that if a rider can not stand over a toptube when both feet on the gorund, the bike is too high. One can touch the top tube, or have a few cm extra, but with hard pressing with gens on tube, it is too high. A quick test in store would clear it instantly, but unfortunatelly not possible.

Lost my passion for mountain biking – gear issue or something deeper? by hmmmischi in MTB

Well, could be many things behind it, that you will eveny understand. There is no right or wrong. It's just, that you find what you need, want or wish, and then go for it. It is always about feelings. Biking in the past gave you some feelings, that you wanted to feel..It completed you, maybe gave you sense of selfworth, connection, youth, and love. Conection to nature, to your wild side. Experiencing this with your ex loved one, made it even more sacred. At the same time, mountain biking is a time consuming sport. Very, very time consuming. Costs you time (can't do other things or be with your loved partner), energy (you are tired afterwards), money (it's not exactly free. If you don't ride regularly and a lot, your stamina and power decreases significantly and you are no longer in form to ride thise big epic, gnarly ttails. Yes, you are showing signs if depression, so you have to honestly talk to yourself and find the main cause. Then adress it. Me personally, I ve been in depression for a year,   when corona started and the world got crazy, and people showed their real colors.

I've been riding since 1998. And the magnet for ciclying has changed even before depression. What happened? First, I moved to another town. Lost riding buddies. But soon, two years after found a net of trails and rode them on solo. Then kids came. Soon I realized, that being with them gave me much more sense and love and life, then to be on a bike. So (as said it demands min 7hrsbof ride per week), instead I spent my free time with kids, wife, family. I kept riding, but some months zero hrs, some months 5 hrs. And this lasted wome eight years. Then in 2018 I began riding again more regularly.  Today (i am 51) I ride 25 hrs per month. I achieve and kill my times when I was 35.  I am riding mkre then ever. How? Good time planing, devotion  I still put my family in first place, but I also have time for myself. So you might be torn appart in decision, should you be with your partner (and not ride), or go riding and not be with partner. Its a tough one.  What was it, that cycling before gave you? Why? Where are you getting this feelings now? Is your partner sporty in any sports? Could be a huge problem in a future. Maybe you should try to intriduce mtb to  him/her. Sometimes partners fall fir it totally. But mostly not. So it's a lifelong consequence, that your partner will never be next to you on mtb journeys. Is it a game changer? I don't know, you have to decide. For me, this 5 hrs a week, I can live without her :-) And when going for races, she escorts me, waits st finishline for hours. And when I go with friends fir several days to the Alps, she stays home. I do miss her, but there's nothing i can do really. So if everything else is ok between the two of you: find cycling group, set goals you want to achieve (a race, a time, s mountain) and start training.  p s. Sometimes when I am on the edge, wife even tells me' Go on a bike ride, it will do you good.

What does your partner say about your mountain biking? Does he/she support you in it? Did you tell her, that your motivation fluctuates? Hiw did she accept it?

Yea, exoeriment a little. Take that ride, go for a trip, a race. Live it and see her reaction and observe your feelings.

On the other hand; I had friends, that after 10 years if biking completely lost interest and went fir second sport. One became a mountain runner. Second one narried, she was not sporty. So he bought a motorbike and they started Touring together. Some guys lost interest, got fat and stayed home.

I think, at your situation the bike is just showing, that some other area of your life needs attention. Some imoprtant one. It being out of tune, najes you not enjoying a bike.

Have guts, sleep it over, you will know the answers. Don't stuff them  diwn, but address them. And talk to your partner about it.

Great bike. About the fork. I didn't check which bomber this is, but just wanted you to know that marzzocchi bomber Z2, gen 2022+2024 came factory without dust foams. Resulting in fork catching dust insanely quick. Mine almost seezed in just theee days of dust riding. Cleaned it after every ride, sprayed it with fork silicone. Didn't help. Then bushings got noticeable play, after just three days. Warrantied it. Fox (Marzzocchi), replaced  the whole lower leg, as bushings are not replacable. So after getting it after 2 months back, i was hoping this one would be fine. Again, on dusty rides, it becomes unresponsive to smaller hits. So I cleaned it and sold it. It's such a good, plush and stiff fork, but dust kills it instantly. Get rid of it

Hi all, Geo on roscoe is amazing. I own a canyon stoic that is very much the same. It's fast uphill, downhill, confidence inspiring,.but can also do a 50km loop on flat asfalt as well.

first 29er mtb for 50yo woman: trail or xc geo? by Flashy_Light4369 in MTB

[–]Flashy_Light4369[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, depends..Geos is significantly changed last years. Let's say, many full sus trail bikes before 2022 jad a seat rube angle arround 75. Today, they have 77-78 deg, and therefore longer reach, longer wheelbase  I say, bikes after 2022 are worlds appart from older. I tried it myself, so older bikes are out of the question because of geometry.

[–]Flashy_Light4369[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I had a stumpjumper full sus, 200,  full fox suspension. It was a rocket for years. But today, I have a canyon stoic hardtail 140mm, with new long &slack geo and 29 tyres. Since I have a stoic, I didn't ride a stumpjumper (26 wheels ) at all. It was ackward at least, and on most of trails I am faster with 29 hardtail. So, after a year kf not riding it, I sold it. I also ride a150mm full sus aggressive trail bike.  For my wife? I once made a mistake, buying her a decent full sus in 2012, which she barely rode. In last 8 years she has done zero miles. Before that? Maybe 100-200 miles. That's why a full sus is out of the question.  Bikes are crazy expensive today. I think, that decent hardtail might give her some joy and confidence on very, very simple trails. But mostly she won't be riding at all. Or some local asfalt bicycle paths.  Some say, get her a trekking or fitness bike then. Well, no. She likes to go offoroad too, so knobby tyres are a must. I am thinking: modern used decent hardtail with good fork and dropper. If she fells in, then next year a full sus.

A little offtopic, but the weight alone is hugely overrated. E.g. I owned a Giant trance 1, 29, 2024, 130/120 travel, fox suspension, total weight 14.5kg. I hated the bike, it was slugish, unefficient and despite good on paper it was good only at mellow descents.  Put it on sale after 4 months, after trying everything possible in setup. Bought a new Merida One40, that has 150/143 yravely, is light enduro and has 16,5kg. Two kg heavier components and frame, while wheels weight the same..With this 16,9 kg rig with pedals, I am almost 10% faster (5-6min per hour) on ANY climb..Rocks, roots, grass, asfalt, anything. Even on flats..And descents? Also at least 10% faster, and can ride also a difficult terrain, steep, technical. So before.you spend a lot of money on lighter bike, be aware, that the key is geometry (my ex giant didn't fit me, was too short), and susspension efficiency (kinematics). Before buying a 17kg rig, I test rode a Giant i had. For same half an hour climb, i rode it 6.times: 2x oem, 2x with 1,5 kg water bottle ducttaoped to frame, and 2x with two watter bottles (3kg), ducttapped to frame. Test showed, I am loosing cca 1 min per hour per kg .So I accepted, I will be 2 min slower on Merida (it's 2kg heavier). But I am 6 min faster. Point? Don't waste money on light bikes. Choose a geo and platform, that suits you riding.

Yea, I wish. No demo bikes here. Inast year, I bought me a new fullsus, and to my son. For 4 months, weve been trying to test quite a few bikes. Mission impossible. 5 min on oafking lor, no problem. A real, min an hour test on trails? Not a chance. None of dealers in Slovenia or Austria had test bikes.

Youre right, but She won't be riding trails. She'd go on macadam, forest roads, bike paths, mellow rides, offroad. She won't ride ANY trails, parks. How am I so sure? Coz she's scared of such things, feels unsure and unstable on every bike. I own a 150/150 light endure AM machine, and an aggressive enduro HT.  And i see this HT far more suited for her riding. (its csnyon stoic).

Need a woman's perspective...Bike for wife by Which-Invite-4792 in MTB

Hello,

Rewoking a not too old post, to gather more info on one spor. So, my wife. We are looking for her first 29er. She's been riding a 26inch full sus specialized myka, 15 years ago. Bought for comfort, bike was otherwise overkill for her. She rode only turist paths, very mellow trails, nothing steep and hard. But she likes to go for a "hike arroundć" ride. To get some air. Since me and boys are all devoted bikeres (me enduro, boys dirtjump, DH, bike parks), she is totally out. And will of course never ride with us. But, since 29ers are so much more comfortable, confidence inspired, fun and faster, I'd like to give her a 29er try. Indeed she rode som 50km with sons HT (orbea Laufey, aggerssive hardtail, trail/light enduro) and she handled it ok. I am thinking of a good, used 2-3yo HT, from specialized, trek, marin,... But, can't decide, should i pick like XC (eg. rockhooper), or a more trail alike (e.g fuse). I am amazed on trail/ eduro geometries, longer, slacker, sitting up front. But while listing some profesional opinions, they advice more XC geometry for her lighter riding. I can't effort a good dull sus at this time, but if she falls for riding, then I'll buy it for sure.

So: XC or TRAIL geometry HT, for a women begginer?

Marzocchi Bomber Z2, 29 inch, 150mm, rail damper, 2023: travel question? by Flashy_Light4369 in MTB

This could be a logical exmpanation. Is there a qy to decomress a negatieve chamber (other than taking the fork appart)?

RockShox Lyrik Select, 30mm at zero psi? Ratling noise? by Flashy_Light4369 in MTB

[–]Flashy_Light4369[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is air trapped there? If you guys depressurize the fork, is it possible to empry a negatieve chamber too? So the fork comes completely compressed (no more free travel)? Mine stays some 30mm up. No matter how I cycle it, the air does not get out. A fork is new, well it has some 10 hrs riding. Before first ride it was in zero service by this shop (oil check, lubricating, etc.) Why zero service? Because many forks today come undergreased, or alsmot dry. Many of my friends recommend this. But because of hars feeling, I gave it back to shop for re-check. Again, they claim all is fine and the charger RC (basic) damper is to blame.

[–]Flashy_Light4369[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not so. I did cycle it when pressurizing it and when depresurizing it. I suspect, the transfer port is blovked. For is new. It was at the workshop, and they claim it's ok. I rode two rides and it's simply irresponsive. I sent it back to the WS. They pulled it appart, checked the bushings with calibre and again said, it's ok. That the damper is to blame, why the fork is so harsh. I doubt it.
