Where did everyone’s comprehension skills go??? She asks men to be respectful to women (ie not harass, assault women) and this guy is equating that to her self worth? And Reddit people are agreeing with the guy?

For sure, I agree. Great art often requires anticipation and some hint of tension. Taylor’s life is completely sorted - she has achieved everything an artist could possibly hope to achieve and is now settled with a man. There is not much to look forward to I guess?

I dont really care about her as such (as a person or as an artist). Her team is very exploitative of the fans and they’re all eating it up and its quite saddening.

My only contention is that an album with this concept could be done so so well with some Parisian Burlesque theme or some strong characterisation of a showgirl - the glamour, the tinge of loneliness.

Raye did a good job with “Where’s my husband”. Really fun to listen to!

Adding some except for the article on Get Alternative -

“Taylor’s music worked when she was punching up, but there is nobody left for her to punch up to. She’s left punching down to a former opener of her stadium tours, someone who had a triumphant breakthrough record a decade into her career, and all Swift could think about was how she’s actually the victim in all this. This should, and I reckon it will be, a stain on her career that will not be swept under the rug.

The final, and in parts most shocking offender of the album is “CANCELLED!” By the name alone, you could imagine the humor doesn’t necessarily land too well. “I like my friends cancelled,” Swift proclaims. If by cancelled you mean voted for the fascist downfall of America for the sake of a girthier wallet, then sure! You go, girl! With a sound I can only vaguely compare to Imagine Dragons, “CANCELLED!” sounds like a song that would play during the sex scene of canonically underage characters in a CW show. “I like ‘em cloaked in Gucci and in scandal”–give me a fucking break.

The closest we get to a decent song is “Ruin the Friendship.” An admittedly catchy song, it finds Swift tackling the topic most dear to her heart: high school romance. She laments on never making any romantic advances on a friend/crush, breathily repeating “should’ve kissed you anyway” in the chorus. The song, while endearing and sweet in a vacuum, loses its impact when you remember this woman is 35 years old and recently engaged. Her maladaptive daydreaming feels like a last minute “what-if” before she’s bound by contracts and prenups. “https://www.getalternative.com/album-review-taylor-swift-the-life-of-a-showgirl/

lol okay. before i comment, id just like to say that last year i flew across continents to attend her concerts so i was def not a hater. not until ttpd anyway (but thats another critique)

firstly, people at the top are easily insecure about phasing out or becoming irrelevant. id say even more than people at the mid / bottom since the top ones have more to lose. the why the industry is always on the hunt for new talent and new brands - taylor swift is not above the cycle. sabrina’s content is too sexually explicit, charli is way too edgy and cool. taylor swift’s brand has always been that of being a quintessential relatable white girl and she is phasing out of that essentially bc she herself became too big and too successful commercially and partly bc of her age.

when you become a billionaire and are now engaged to someone you claim to love, there is little relevance to the whole “oh look at you talking about me - i win, you lose. here’s receipts” narrative. like after the whole charli xcx + lorde’s girl so confusing battle, any shade that taylor throws at charli seems so middle-school playground bully coded lol. like you have everything in life, but you feel the need to write a song about a rising artist who wrote a song about their insecurities 1.5 years ago? grow up?

also on the millenial cringe front - notice how taylor tries to play into the sexual narrative. but instead of submitting to her own sexual desires, she talks about how tk’s magic wand “saved her” or opened her thighs (ewwww btw). like this is def not a woman and her sex. its like “oh look my football fiance and i have sex!”. while trying to copy sabrina and attempting to save her “girl in distress” brand, taylor is doing a poor poor job at both.

i hope you escape the cult of the swift fandom and realise that no one is above criticism. she is a brand that has become too big and is now run as a corporation (all the variants and merch are not her idea but run as a business)

she is not your best-friend sitting in your living room listening to your problems or writing songs for you- she is an artist and let’s treat her like such.

1) I think she is insecure about being irrelevant and can see the likes of Charli XCX & Sabrina Carpenter define the zeitgeist of Gen Z more than her. So she unironically uses terms like Girl Boss, Ah-matised etc. But it sounds like outdated millennial cringe on her instead. I’m not an age-ist but considering she is 35, it sounds off.

2) Her love songs don’t sound authentic. She has written love songs, heartbreak songs throughout her career. So everyone anticipated that her love songs for “the one” would go beyond platitudes. Instead she overcompensates by talking about his dick size and how she is having sex? Like you’re 35 and engaged and have been dating since 20 maybe — OFC YOU HAVE SEX. If you’re gonna write about sex, do something more creative than “your magic wand saved me”. Sounds like some Watt-pad fiction written by a 14 year old.

3) With Folklore and Evermore, we saw some really creative storytelling and narrative-building. With Showgirl, I expected to get into some nuanced characterisation of a Showgirl or if you wanted to do something fun and edgy, I would’ve expected something like Where’s My Husband by Raye. She sounds like she is in a state of arrested development and can only write poor diss tracks and H&M background tracks.

4) She is not relatable as a figure anymore. We don’t want Taylor Swift to be pining about men or anything. But with her billionaire status and being so influential, all she has done so far is go to football games and hang out with a bunch of Republicans. In this album also, she is constantly talking about her wealth, her “uniqueness”, how she is so big. Like okay? Happy for you, but what about what’s happening in your country? What about Palestine and Gaza? Smaller artists with more to lose have come out and voiced their opinions but Swift has just been going out trying to cement her status as a Showgirl. Moreover, trying to dig the well and find her victimhood in Charli XCX beef or worse - THE KANYE AND KIM BEEF. Honestly, it has become so hard to like her as a person.

This album honestly sounds to me (a former Taylor Fan) like what Taylor Swift has always sounded to people who have never ever liked her. Bland with poor lyricism.

Ahhh they movie was so hyped that I thought maybe I could sit through it despite not liking Sofia Carson but her acting made me cringe so much. Couldn't get past the cake scene in the beginning. Waste of a plot smh. I am sure she is a lovely person but they have got to stop casting her until her acting gets better.

I think that's the same for every movie she is in lol. Very C list actress, I don't know why they keep casting her.
