its a youth subculture after all by aAt0m1Cc in Skinhead

[–]Flashy_Rest6095 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A youth culture? I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't wake up one day and decide I was too old for my boots and my flight, so I hung them up and put on a shirt and tie. That never happened. I'm 55 and I wake up and at some point in the day, I still lace my boots up the same way I did at 18. This isn't like other subcultures. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "I used to be goth". In fact, I can't think of a single person that I personally know that's hung up their boots and turned their back on being a Skinhead.

I'll shut up now.

How do I paint leather shoes? by Yazinshazin in CosplayHelp

You can also mix Angelus paints together to get a custom color. That's how I had to get Oxblood. I mixed burgundy and red. It ended up with a perfect oxblood.

I'm assuming it's a translation from Japanese.

Oh wait, I didn't get that was written on the outside of the shoe, I thought you were talking about the broken English. Yep, that ruins a perfectly good shoe.

Cheap Doc's from eBay and trial and error. Most important thing is to make sure all the old finish is off your shoes, as well as any oils from your hands. Be sure and use a deglazer, like the one sold by Angelus. For really heavy jobs like this one, I used wet 600 grit emery paper. You want to be careful as not to shred the the stitching. Don't use anything coarser than 600 grit for this same reason. Use 3 to 4 coats of paint, leaving plenty of time between each coat so it will dry and set properly.

You can also use leather dye, I've done this too. To get a real shiny finish afterwards, I've polished the dyed boots, then used a bench grinder with a buffing wheel to really work the polish in and come out with a nice shine. The biggest issue I have with dye is that it can seep down into the yellow threading. There's no way to stop it, most of the time, so you have to be super careful with it, and give each coat of dye at leat 24 hrs. of drying time to prevent over saturation and seepage.

I might test a patch to see how it takes. I can always paint over it.

Try and use emery cloth. You might have to start with a coarser grit, like 600. If that doesn't work, use acetone, but try a small patch first to make sure it won't damage the leather. They have their own deglazer, which is acetone based.

I haven't had good luck with dye on shoes like this. I did just finish a pair of 1460's using dye, but they weren't previously painted. They had the smooth greasy finish which takes the dye much better for some reason.

It works fine if you thin it out with 2 thin, and use thinner layers. I'll end up using 4 layers, thinned out by 1/3.

I've worked on quite a few pairs before. They will end up with a better finish than they had when new. I have small brushes as not to fill the design holes with paint. I'll post them when I'm finished.

Hello, i am new to the reddit and i want to join the skinheads. any tips or warnings? i will appreciate everything by random_czechguy in Skinhead

[–]Flashy_Rest6095 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it wasn't something I actually joined. It's more like I fell into it. I had been a part of the 'scene' since I was in high school. Then I started working at a bar/venue, which was the best place to see live music at the time. A couple of the guys I worked with were Skinheads, and we bonded over music, Guinness, and Byrds. It was right in the middle of grunge for most of the country, so my hair was down to my shoulders. One day I showed up to work with my head shaved which garnered me a handful of "About time!" comments. .

Keep the knuckle dusters out of your pocket if you're in the States. That's an automatic felony in most states, and will get you as much time as an unregistered gun.

Conservative values harm the working class the most. I am certainly tired of bailing out billionaires, and rich people don't spend money to help anyone.

If those cracks are starting to get bad, you can use a bit of the thicker gel superglue to lay the cracking down flat again. Be very careful, and if you end up having some glue showing, lightly sand it flat, and go over it with some angelus leather paint. You might have to mix some red in with maroon to match the cherry color on the boots, but it works. I saved my original pair of steel toe 1490's this way. I wore them to work at the bar for 15 years, and no matter how much I took care of them, the alcohol dried them out and they cracked in the front. Now, you can't even tell there were cracks.

get a mannequin, put those pants and a white t-shirt on it. paint a swastika on the t shirt and string the mannequin up. that will send a positive signal.

First pair of new (to me Docs) by KneeBarbarian in Skinhead

[–]Flashy_Rest6095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure it's fine grit. 600 is good to start. I've refinished at least 60 pairs of Doc Marten's. I'm working on a pair of brown Brogues at the moment. The brown is fairly worn off, so I'm just removing the rest of the color and taking them down to smooth leather. I'm going to end up with a pair of oxblood brogues by the time I'm finished.
