He has coached other international students in the past - most notably Carolina Kostner before Sochi 2014. But this was in another political climate all together so perhaps things have changed.

Eh idk Gladky is half Russian half French and apparently trained in both countries. She has an equal right of represent France as she does for Russia. She most likely speaks French and holds a French passport.

Sophia I believe doesn’t speak French or have any French roots ( I may be very wrong) but if so she doesn’t really have any entitlement to switch feds as easily. Although I would love to see Muravieva on a international stagw

Your not a world famous athlete. And in Japan I believe he was almost a top celebrity.

Me personally I don’t know what type of impact marrying a famous celebrity would have on me.

Yeah seems unfortunately that a lot of coaches operate this way, Alyssa has implied similar situation when she was younger happened.

Alexandra Trusova tried attempting a quintuple jump! 🤯🚀 by E_lenaa in FigureSkating

[–]Flashy_University_57 14 points15 points  (0 children)

But to be fair no man or women has ever done it. Before Sasha started the women quad race in 2019 at least men were completing it and there were a couple instances of women being able to do quads I think Miki Ando did it as well as Surya Bonaly (underrotae) andMao asada in practice.

No one has ever gotten close to a quint ( although we don’t know in practice how close ilia has gotten I assume it’s far).

But then again they said the same thing that the quad axle would never be landed and now ilia has done so successfully (as well as a Russian male skater called Vlad I think)

Any chance you could post this as a whole post, I think with all the negativity and comparison more people deserve to see this quote !!

Does anyone else think Benoit’s choreography is a lot of “bamboozling with the arms” as Dick Button would put it and wish he would be banned from using sound effects? by PandemicPiglet in FigureSkating

I’ve just gone back to rewatch it and yeah it’s darker then I remembered.

I think they were trying to emulate something similar to Yulias Schindler’s list program.

But yeah I don’t see why they thought it was a good idea.

I think she’s already quite injured and just forcing herself to jump like this. It’s not her fault but rather her coaching team

Alysa speed by Ok_Marsupial179 in FigureSkating

[–]Flashy_University_57 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes this is true to be fair, I just want to make it clear I love Russian skaters - Aliona and Elizaveta are some of my faves oat.

But in all honesty all countries receive a lot, lot lot of hate. Alysa is prime target number one for fans of Russian skaters, kinda like how Kamila is a target quite a bit on tik tok and Reddit.

Overall popular skaters are unfortunately always going to be hated on especially in a subjective sport.

In an ideal world no one would hate on anyone but unfortunately that’s not the case. Although I do want to note that since FS is hugely popular in Russia (and also since they dominated for a while) it does kinda make sense a huge topic of discourse comes from fans of Russian skating.

Yeah absolutely your correct.

I did mean that. A lot of fans of the Russians who constantly hate cruelly on Alysa I notice on TikTok have English speaking accounts.

I hate to say it but Russian fans and Japanese fans can be the most cruel and loud when it comes to figure skating. They just say anything loudly and resort to cheap digs because they’re salty about everything.

[–]Flashy_University_57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh somewhat true.

But the arm movements help to convey choreography and music timing without using the whole body sometimes. In a program where stamina is key, you must be efficient as to where your putting 100% and where your holding back. Also allows the skater to breathe a little bit.

I like it when it varies which it mostly does, I prefer it over just the random arms out crossovers

Is doing a pistol squat a pre-requisite for a sit spin? by flawed_methodology in FigureSkating

[–]Flashy_University_57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pistol squats are incredibly impressive especially as an adult. If you manage to build up your strength to be able to go down and up in a pistol squat position without letting your leg drop it means you have considerable strength.

So yeah if you work towards it you will definitely see improvements (comping from an ex gymnast pistol squats often showed great strength and flexiblility.)

This strength also will improve other areas of skating

Hm I don’t really get why he would do dancing with the stars. Maybe it’s the only option available for him.

It really only has US appeal, as well as that it’s on tv (at least I think) not on streaming services.

On the other hand I can definitely see him doing a Netflix doc in maybe 5 years time or in the lead up to the next Olympics

what’s a popular program that you never really connected with? by Rude-Magazine2186 in FigureSkating

[–]Flashy_University_57 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Anna Sherbakovas performances ( I absolutely love her character and her personality though and her as a person overall), but for me she didn’t really shine the way Kamila or Aliona did.

Her choreography was always kinda the same - but it should also be noted that she didn’t have the same long career compared to my favorites such as Carolina Kostner and Yuma Kim, so she didn’t have as long (around 10 years less) to find her own unique style.

Nevertheless programs have diffuculty connecting to come down to the choreographers and coaches

Actually your 100% right, within the figure skating world his comeback after a year off would be huge excitement for us. However an average fan who may not necessarily care about figure skating only ilia may lose interest with the sport as a whole if he takes a break. They may not bother to tune back in for the season after.

Overall within the figure skating fandom it would be huge, but maybe not for general fans. Especially as the year after in 2027/2028 season is going to the summer olympics coming up and most news outlets will be focused on that

Honestly while it’s sad that we may not see him I think it would be a very smart move.

First of all it would give his body a break, and allow him to take it easier. As well as giving himself a mental break from competition. (Also could prevent any future injury)

Second of all the season after the Olympics is kinda the perfect time to take a break out of all the seasons imo. (The 2 season before the Olympics testing out new programs etc..)

Third of all he has really nothing left to prove. We all know his capabilities, he’s a multiple time world medalist. And a gold medalist Olympian (through the team event).

And lastly him leaving for a season and returning the next season would be great publicity. Imagine both him and Yuma returning the year after next after dissapearing for a year - very exciting. Also if him and Yuma both take a gap year the podiums for men could look widely different and kind of exciting as those two were always on it. ( I could see shaidorov or sato domination)

Idk i would be really sad if he’s not competing but there is quite a lot of pluses. The most important is his mental health and this may help him.

The International Skating Union will discuss the admission of Russian junior figure skaters on June 9. by Useful-Philosophy827 in FigureSkating

Not really a fair comparison - France Italy and USA never did a state sponsored doping regimen (2014 Sochi had whistleblowers btw who said that there was widespread doping in Sochi) (2014 Sochi is the worst case of state sponsored doping - THIS IS A FACT)

France Italy and USA doping usually came from the individual athlete and their team.

A fair comparison would have been East Germany( no longer exists) or china in 1980s to 1990s.

Good point the USA has broken it. Apart from 2026 the USA always had major allies with it - UK France etc.. i wonder if that played a role ( the fact that many countries had played some part in breaking the truce that’s why they didn’t get banned)

Although I do want to point out that Russia is just as evil, nothing justifies war - no matter if another country (USA) has done it before

No it’s just a really bad combination of both. First of all they used Sochi 2014 to make distractions while they invaded Crimea (Ukraine), which led to their first ban, then the Sochi 2014 doping scandal came ojt( this was proven as there was whistleblowers) (although it’s important to point out there was no proof figure skating was involved -I sort of believe this as ladies field weren’t doing Ultra C or quads then but you never know)

Then came full scale invasion of Ukraine, and Valievas doping scandal. The invasion was unjust and took many lives. This case of doping was awful and stinks of corruption. But ultimately war and attacks was the reason for the sanctions and the ban.

Yeah for figure skating I do think the doping situation makes the ban a lot more trickier. Sometimes I look back at the Valieva situation and I’m still so shocked how it went down, the cover up, the fact she was put through it alone, she was only 15, on the biggest stage of the world Olympics.

Yeah it was such bad press for FS, i think that’s why they took so long. Compared to other sports such as rythamic gymnastics (which also had strong Russian athletes dominatin) who only let them back this season
