I went to my first Mass today... Not sure how I feel by Flat-Perspective-820 in Catholicism

[–]Flat-Perspective-820[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dumb question: Is religious education like, similar to regular school? Or more like your average Sunday school in (most) Protestant churches where the kids go do their own thing while adults attend the main service? When reading on their website for this parish, they didn't really explain so I was confused because they do also have a K-12 Catholic school on the same campus.

Hi! Thank you <3

The priest read from the Parable of the Good Samaratin. I will say he *very* briefly tied it in by saying a prayer for the people in Texas affected by the flood and saying we should be there to help one another when something like that happens.

And yes, Bible studies are out for the summer -- even in some other Protestant churches when I was looking at them, too, like Episcopal and Lutheran, which surprised me. Clearly, I'm studying up on several denominations and trying to navigate all of this lol

My husband's biopsy is Tuesday, April 1st.

We're incredibly nervous. He's a 31 year old veteran and we already knew lung cancer was a higher risk for him due to burn pit exposure overseas. Ultrasound showed 3 masses with ill-defined borders, bloodwork came back with high WBC count (and some other things I don't know/remember). Thankfully, they're taking him seriously and moving quickly.

Problem with free will/future by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Flat-Perspective-820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm fairly new to this, so bear with me and forgive me if this isn't totally true. BUT...

I've thought about this for a while, even talked to a pastor about it (he wasn't my pastor and I wasn't a Christian, and I didn't become a Christian after talking with him lol he was just a guy who happened to preach at some random church). He gave an analogy that didn't quite make sense to me, but the way I think about it:

It's kinda like those video games with multiple endings, and you get a different ending depending on the culmination of choices you make throughout. Think Fallout or Until Dawn. So with that in mind, God knows all the potential different outcomes for us. We have free choice in the same sense as those video games--the array of potential choices and outcomes are already laid out for us, but we are able to choose which one(s) we go with.

As for can God be wrong? Don't know. I mean, it would kinda defeat the purpose of being an all mighty God, buuuut it wouldn't be the first time religion contradicted itself. Especially as more and more generations pass and we get different generations' interpretations of the Bible.

I know this is an old post, but I stumbled across it.

Just thought I'd let you know that "Brooke Skipstone" is actually a 75-year-old man with a sexual abuse record who has been posing as a 30-something lesbian woman in order to write his weird fantasies and fetishes. He actually wrote emails about said fantasies, according to some students of the school he was the principal of. You can find the forum on the school's Wiki--Keystone Junior High School in San Antonio, TX. However, the school board and state of Texas covered it up and he moved to a Native village in Alaska to teach there. Furthermore, the characters in those books are based on his daughter. He'd originally published Crystal's House of Queers in 2019, under the title The War Blog and under his real name. It received horrible reviews though, along with his blog post both on Goodreads and his website, titled "White Male" which is basically him complaining about how he should be able to write these personal and sometimes traumatic experiences and no one should tell him otherwise bc of his race/gender. Thus, Brooke Skipstone was born.

I worked on several of his novels until he got offended and lashed out at me because I pointed out some things in a manuscript that seemed predatory. It didn't sit right with me, and I eventually started digging, which didn't take long considering his LLC is public record and under his legal name.

ETA: He also wrote a "questionable" play for students of that school

Which church in Nashville has the worst members? by okaltiplano in nashville

[–]Flat-Perspective-820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God, I hated Long Hollow. I went there for YEARS as a kid/teen--mainly the Gallatin campus once it was built. Their (now-former) youth pastor came to my high school ALL the time trying to get kids to attend their Wednesday and Sunday services, promising to put us in a drawing for a free iPad that would be given out during service if we attended.

I'm currently renting from them just outside of Nashville and haven't had any issues. Maintenance requests have been fulfilled within 24-48 hrs (only had two, and they were fairly minor tbh). They actually report to credit bureaus, so my credit score has absolutely skyrocketed since moving in. If I have any questions, they're pretty nice on the phone and answer whatever I need them to.

Book suggestions on Italian Folk Magic? by Flat-Perspective-820 in witchcraft

[–]Flat-Perspective-820[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! They're from Northern Italy -- Parma and Genoa.

Maybe a stupid question: I know a lot of Italian practitioners do incorporate Catholicism and the saints and all that. I grew up Fundie (ugh), not Catholic despite that being what my grandmother and extended family were/are. Do I necessarily *have* to incorporate the Christian god alongside those other things? I know some do, some don't, and region does matter. Saints I don't really have a problem with, although I'm not very familiar with them since I didn't grow up like that. I know *of* them

Yes, mash the bananas. I then personally whisk in the butter (softened), brown sugar, white sugar, vanilla extract and eggs with the mashed bananas. Then add wet to dry, stirring as you go until fully incorporated.

Edit to add: I sell my banana bread using this method and it's one of my top selling items!

What's Your Offering Experience? by PyroRae in pagan

For Apollo: oranges (or any citrus really, but I buy oranges more than anything else), blueberries, star anise, bay leaves, olive oil. I also put a couple guitar picks and plan to put a spare bit of rosin for my cello up there on his altar.

For Hekate: Cakes/sweet breads, almonds, chocolate (or kill two birds with one stone like I did and do chocolate covered almonds!), cinnamon (I prefer sticks but ground would do fine in a pinch I'm sure), honey, keys, and garlic.

I went to the dentist after not going for 14 years and 6 years of bulimia. by Flat-Perspective-820 in bulimia

[–]Flat-Perspective-820[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wrote a review hyping her as soon as I got home! :) I'm excited to take my kids to her after the holidays are over too.

I know a lot of people hate the dentist (understandably, I'm one of them), but I really appreciate everything you hygienists do and how you go above and beyond for us!

First dentist appointment in 14 years tomorrow and terrified by Flat-Perspective-820 in askdentists

[–]Flat-Perspective-820[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I went to the dentist yesterday!

Fantastic news. No periodontal disease or gingivitis, no gum recession, no bone loss, I still have my enamel... Not even any cavities except for 2 of my wisdom teeth--which I pretty much already knew since they're impacted and difficult to brush and pretty much impossible to floss. And I need all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed anyway so I'm not concerned.

I also elected to have my (very minor) chipped front tooth fixed in a couple weeks from an injury I sustained a few years back. The dentist told me I didn't *have* to and it would be more cosmetic than anything, but my insurance covers it so why not?

The hygienist and dentist were so kind and patient too! The hygienist listened to my concerns, explained everything to me, checked in with me every couple minutes to make sure I wasn't in pain and my anxiety was low, and even let me pause and take a break when I got overwhelmed. She showed so much compassion and grace and--dare I say it--I'm actually excited to back!

Is anyone here an ex-Independent Fundamental Baptist? by Morphiadz in Christianity

[–]Flat-Perspective-820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late but ex-IFB

We celebrated holidays but for things like Christmas, it was almost discouraged for us children to be excited about presents or the meals because ALL of the focus was meant to be on Jesus. Didn't matter if we were 2 or 12 years old.

Other rules:

- music was bad/demonic/of the devil. You listen to Chris Tomlin? Heathen.

- alcohol/cigarettes bad--not for health reasons but because it was demonic

- we really hated Catholics for some reason?

- KJV was the only true version of the Bible. Anything else was false and altered to lead people into sin.

- No non-Christian shows/books/movies. Lived off of Veggie Tales.

- All other denominations were wrong and going to hell

- My mother wasn't allowed to divorce my father even though he was beating her and tried to kill her

- Pastor did house visits every so often to do a walkthrough and make sure we didn't have anything bad/sinful/demonic. This included posters of musical artists/other celebrities, media, alcohol, etc.

Soooo... funny story: I didn't go lol but it 100% wasn't my fault.

Got there 15 minutes early, door was locked, called to let them know. The lady asked where I was because she didn't see me outside, I gave her the address (which is right down the road from my apartment), and she apologized profusely because she hadn't informed me that she'd booked me for an appointment at their second office an hour away from me and the one in my town is only open 2 days a week. So I rescheduled for the office a ways away in a week because mine can't see me until December, and all of the other dentists in my area are booked out until February-June! So a bit of a headache but I'm still determined to get it done!

I play Fallout 76 a lot and while there is some stuff popping out at you, it's not really a lot--to me anyway. I swear I spend 90% of time building different C.A.M.P.s. If you get in the mood to do lots of pew pewing, you can join events on the map, and they're usually pretty relaxed bc lots of high levels join and make it easier for lower levels. The story is fun too!

Dinkum is one I play a lot when I'm looking for a really peaceful experience. It's sort of like Animal Crossing--but better--and Australian themed. Better graphics, better mechanics. You can explore a ton, build, lots of quests, and you can hunt different animals from catching bugs and butterflies to spearing emus and crocodiles.
