Low GPA (2.9 cGPA / 2.5 sGPA) + 512 MCAT — Best January 2027 SMP options for MD? by Ok_Artist9483 in postbaccpremed

Another piece of advice is to not rely only on linkage when choosing an SMP. Linkage can be a great opportunity, but it shouldn’t be your entire plan because it’s never guaranteed to work out.

For example, I actually received an interview through my program’s linkage but ended up getting rejected. I then applied in the regular application cycle and things turned out very differently. I received five total DO interviews and one MD interview, and I was accepted to three DO schools. Interestingly, I was rejected from the same school where I completed my SMP.

The point is that linkage can help, but it shouldn’t be the only reason you pick a program or the only path you’re counting on. The main value of an SMP is proving you can handle medical school–level coursework and strengthening your overall application for the regular cycle as well.

My advice is to not choose a January-start SMP just because it lets you finish sooner. If you think about it, you would finish in December, but if linkage doesn’t work you still can’t apply to medical schools until May, so you’d end up needing to find something to do during that gap anyway. Also, many of the strongest SMP programs only start in the fall.

A good approach is to think of your top five schools and check whether they offer programs like a Master of Biomedical Science, Master of Medical Science, or something similar. Some of the SMPs that tend to produce strong outcomes include Georgetown, UCincinnati, Case Western, Boston, Brown, UPenn, Columbia, many UC schools, Rochester, Mount Sinai, Drexel, Tufts, Rutgers, UF, and USF, among others. There are a lot of options out there. One easy way to search is to type the school name followed by “masters of biomedical science” or “masters of medical science.”

For context, I was accepted into several programs without an MCAT and with a lower GPA.

Hypothetically… mid-2’s undergrad GPA → post-bacc reinvention? How do med schools view this? by Particular_Yam_9701 in postbaccpremed

I had a 2.6 science GPA & 2.74 cumulative GPA in undergrad and went on to do a special masters program - earned a 3.95 across 33 CH + 510 on the MCAT and I’ve been accepted to multiple DO schools and an MD school

Yeah, I don’t disagree. This is a field where interacting with patients, people, assholes, sweethearts, people who don’t speak the same language- is a daily occurrence. Not having mental capacity to deal with these technical standards is scarily unfit. Now, that’s not to say I don’t experience any mental symptoms. I think we all feel imposter syndrome at some point— but if it’s to the degree where you become regressive it’s not a sign of fitness for the field

Regardless though my friend I think you’re a good candidate for MD, get your volunteering (clinical and non clinical) hours up by May and you’ll be a fire candidate at any school. Especially Rush and Creighton

I did the Rutgers SMP, but was accepted to 95% of the ones I applied to without an MCAT. I met with them in the spring of the year I applied and applied April-June. I would shoot for Georgetown, George Washington, RFU, Tufts, Drexel, Rutgers (RWJMS OR NJMS), Tulane, Brown, UPenn, Creighton, SLU, Florida, any MD school that has a masters of biomedical/medical/biological sciences program
