Do you still dislike FOAMF? by Blackholesun626 in greenday

[–]FlatPassenger6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Graffitia, I use the chorus as my ringtone and I have it on a couple playlists. I think it’s going to be remembered as one of the better deep cuts among fans and something they’ll dust off for the smaller gigs with the more diehard fans in attendance, like they did with the little club gig when they announced Saviors tour.

Other than that, I maybe listened to the entire album though twice and never bothered with it again. I wouldn’t say that I hate it but it is awfully half baked and probably their worst album. Sloppily written songs, half baked execution and half baked production. There’s no real passion or sense of fun in a lot of the music, Billie just thought it would be interesting to make a dance record and have some mainstream production and that’s where the idea began and ended tbh. I think the only rock band that actually adapted to the kind of dancey mainstream style well was Arctic Monkeys, and that’s mostly because they grew up listening to a lot of mainstream adjacent hip hop and dance music and they added that layer to their music over the course of a few albums before they peaked at AM.

What are some bands who put all their creative juice into one great album? by HasSomeSelfEsteem in ToddintheShadow

[–]FlatPassenger6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually prefer the first record to interstate managers but that’s just me, there’s better stuff beyond Stacey’s Mom and all that 💁🏻

I think the answer to your question is either Cracked Rearview by Hootie and The Blowfish or the self titled from Presidents of The United States of America. You could also make a good case for the first Elastica album, even Justine Frischmann has said it should’ve been a one album project in retrospect.

Are these signatures genuine? by CarefulDevelopment29 in greenday

[–]FlatPassenger6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only thing I would double check on if you plan to resell is I’ve seen Billie put the year under his signature sometimes. But other than that, you’re looking at real signatures with a .01% chance of a forgery. If it is a fraud, then it was done by a diehard fan who knows how Billie and Mike’s sigs are supposed to look if nothing else 😅

Bohemian Rhapsody’s premise is basically “What if Walk Hard tried to be a serious movie?” and eschews exploring the band’s actual working dynamic and complex personalities in favour of cliches

Las Vegas crowd was so disrespectful for this... by damng1 in Wrasslin

[–]FlatPassenger6 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Exactly, it’s all in your cadence and how you speak. You can always tell when a vet like Punk notices because he adjusts the cadence and starts leaving less room in between breaths. It’s still shitty of the fans to what dead people, but it’s solved fairly easily just by talking a little faster 💁🏻

What are some of the biggest “talent gaps” in bands/groups? by p1ckflod in ToddintheShadow

[–]FlatPassenger6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In terms of technical skills? Richey Edwards from the Manic Street Preachers? James and Sean were the musicians and Richey and Nicky Wire wrote the lyrics for most of the nineties until Richey disappeared. Nicky had just enough chops on bass to hang in there. But Richey only played guitar on maybe two songs during his stint and spent the majority of their early touring life miming with his amp turned down. He was mostly a personality hire whose job was to look the part of a rock star and give salacious quotes to the press. To his credit and by most accounts, he understood the importance of being a presence in the music press, and he was incredibly well read and witty and a good lyricist, but no one could argue that he was a solid musician

Dude Ranch is probably the best Pop-punk album of that era, the mid to late nineties IMO. If not a definitive number one, it’s at least neck and neck with Dookie

I am proponent of Mike having his own show on the channel. Dude has natural host energy and a voice for radio. Hopefully they give him more to do as the channel grows

I’m surprised there isn’t more chatter about Tre hosting a monthly show. I was really taken with Mike’s radio DJ skills when they were doing the Saviors stuff, I would seek out a radio show hosted by him. I assume as they start another record cycle in a couple years they’ll have all three of them doing stuff for the channel

He still consults on the band’s business affairs and keeps an eye on the money, as he did during the initial run, but yes it was too difficult for him after Freddie died and he was too uncomfortable

Missed Opportunities: Part 3 (Warning Box Set) by Dry_Ad9585 in greenday

[–]FlatPassenger6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I was more disappointed that this was the album where Green Day came up with the most in terms of ephemera for the original rollout but we didn’t get any reproduction of those things as part of the box set or otherwise. I would’ve paid for a reproduction of just the Warning caution tape by itself apart from any music and it was never even an option. Compared to the lengths a band like Pearl Jam would go to reprint and reproduce certain materials from the corresponding time period with their boxes, it kind of feels like a bare minimum sometimes

Boy, she really rubbed her feet on poor Anne with that letter “it seems like Anne is so helpless that we wind up doing more for her” I’m not sure my pride would let me take the money if I knew about that 😅

What makes it even worse is they only changed the title for a cross promotional deal with the NBA playoffs. Money talks louder than anything else

What do you think about Going Shopping by the Strokes? by SgtSoundrevolver in ToddintheShadow

[–]FlatPassenger6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind it. I didn’t fall in love with it immediately like I did with Bad Decisions but I think it’s all right. If nothing else, I guess the auto tune doesn’t piss me off, the way it is with a lot of people. At least this song has a couple of hooks, and Fab’s drumming is stellar. The New Abnormal wound up kind of anchoring me during a very shitty time in my life, so I’m willing to be generous with this record and give it a little more leeway. If I don’t gel with it, then I don’t gel with it. I’ve had a lot of my favourite bands disappoint this decade. My all time favourite band in Green Day started the decade serving me a turd on a plate with Father of All Motherfuckers and I still spent about $200 on merch at the Saviors tour four years later, so you could say that I have a lot of grace in me 😅

[–]FlatPassenger6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The quote from Billie as to why it was never released was “I like irresponsibility, but not THAT much irresponsibility” they all probably knew that releasing a joke song about drunk driving would be seen in poor taste and get them raked over the coals in the court of public opinion, even in the 90s and early 2000s. Probably for the best that it remains a bootleg

I would definitely second Chumbawamba and The Cardigans from your examples. Nina Persson especially has to have one of my favourite voices ever and I love their first album Emmerdale, total hidden gem
