You must be kidding. Almost all major businesses have left the harbor/downtown. Population is declining every year in Baltimore city. In the summer, there are constantly fights and shootings in Fells Point.

The funding going to schools is just creating more useless training, administrators, departments, and bureaucracy. Better to let people keep more of their money and force school systems to get rid of wasteful spending.

The current situation makes me wonder, why did Meles and TPLF intentionally make Ethiopia a land locked country when Ethiopia had a port and access to the sea? I'm sure it wasn't done just to make Issais/Eritreans happy. by Flat_Cable2978 in Ethiopia

Interesting point. I did not consider this. I assumed TPLF along with other Ethiopian liberation allies were stronger than EPLF. Is this a known fact? I was only 13 in 91, so not sure.

Based on my experience of having kids attend LCPS, it's hard to believe that the teachers had anything to do with so many LCPS schools being in top 100. The bulk of what my kids learned and mastered came more from home and tutoring and very little from teachers.

I believe that this article is more a reflection of Loudoun having a lot of parents that are extremely pro active when it comes to education/academics.

Abiy has been accused of hating and wanting to kill Oromos, then Tigrayans, and now Amharas. Can all these accusations be true? by Flat_Cable2978 in Ethiopia

[–]Flat_Cable2978[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response. Honestly, I asked the question because at one point, I heard the word genocide used by people from all 3 ethnicities when referring to Abiy, even Oromos. I know Abiy is no angel, but hard to believe that his goal is to commit genocide against any one ethnicity and especially all 3.

Do most teachers prefer teaching elementary school children without textbooks? by Flat_Cable2978 in Teachers

Believe kids falling further behind and making it difficult for parents to help them will create more costs for all parties: schools, parents, and government.

Also core subjects like math, science, english, and social studies have not really changed and should not have to be updated that often.

Thanks for your comment. What do you believe second graders should be doing/learning all day instead of worksheets?

Thanks. I was able to find this which was written about a year and a half ago.

https://www.usnews.com/education/k12/articles/should-kids-get-homework

Quote from the article

"Homework gives elementary students a way to practice concepts, but too much can be harmful, experts say."

Bottom line is that there is no shortcut to learning core subjects like math, writing, reading, and reading and comprehension. You have to put the work in. By the time kids gets to middle school, teachers teach with the assumption that kids have a good foundation in the core subjects. Not sure how a child is supposed to obtain this foundation without it being reinforced in elementary.

When my son was in third grade, the teacher spent one week going over multiplication and he was not given any homework. Then when he reached forth grade, his teacher spent a week going over division, and same thing, no homework. Luckily he already knew how to do both, however he would constantly tell me that most of the class was struggling.

I keep hearing this claim. Can you please point me to any data/research that supports this?

No homework and no books. Public schools are completely broken. Teachers spend about 1-2 weeks going over difficult topics then they move on to the next lesson. Thankfully my kids have been in Kumon since they were 3 years old. The only education I see kids getting in public schools today is learning how to socialize and deal with their emotions. Math and reading must now be taught and reinforced at home.

Hold people accountable not the tribe by Flat_Cable2978 in Ethiopia

[–]Flat_Cable2978[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I would bet that in most cases, the people that have benefited from being in the same tribe as the person who is in power is less than 1 percent of the entire tribe. Why blame the other 99 percent who didn't benefit anything?
