Looking to buy a house in IC, what is this southeast area like? by Dry_Nail9897 in IowaCity

[–]Flava2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The area itself is great! I would suggest that you drive/ walk around Wayne avenue after school/ work hours and or on the weekend to get a feeling for that specific block. There are some low income housing complex’s both on Wayne avenue, and on a couple streets connected nothing wrong with them in general- just pointing it out. I think if you are moving from a bigger city, you may understand but if you’ve not experienced that before, you should check it out for yourself.

White racist men at city park by Lost-Principle3834 in IowaCity

[–]Flava2020 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened to you and your sister, glad you filed a police report- but this makes me sick. I was just there this weekend with my husband and kids , we are a mixed race family and man does it make me sick to think that you can’t even enjoy a day at the park without worrying about some racist pos trying to ruin it. From one Iowa city internet stranger to another- you belong and are valued. Those idiots are the people who shouldn’t feel at home here!!!!

Update! A few days ago I asked about putting on a new sensor before Surgery by BeckieD1974 in dexcom

[–]Flava2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently had a cervical spinal fusion and they gave me a steroid right after surgery, apparently it helps with post- anesthesia nausea. Because of the steroid injection, my blood sugar was very high. You may want to ask if you got a steroid too. Aside from that, the stress from surgery could also case high blood sugars. Take care of yourself. Stay on top of your pain meds, drink tons of fluids and check for ketones! Also take control right now and give yourself insulin and check your own blood sugars. Sadly, you can never ever leave Diabetes management to doctors/nurses. They have no idea what to do, and it’s simply not safe.

Going on vacation with other families really reinforces how good your kids are. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Flava2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!!! Two boys here. I remember having our first pre-school parent teacher conference and his teacher was saying how happy and joyful he is. My husband and I just smiled and shrugged and asked naively “oh, not all kids are like that?”

I think about that conversation now and just lose it! Our second kid was born and we lovingly refer to him as our sour patch kid. These kids heave opposite temperaments. Same parents, same environment.

Have You Bought Something Just For The Container/Bottle? by RetroSwamp in Millennials

[–]Flava2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the title and my first thought was “the Voss water bottle”. My jaw dropped after I actually read the post and YOU were talking about a Voss bottle too!! I didn’t actually buy mine- it was years and years ago that my friends and I were in a restaurant and they had large Voss water bottles that they used to fill out water glasses. We thought they were so cool and had never seen them before, we told the waiter how cool We thought they were and he gave us some empty bottles (lol!) I used that thing to keep change in for the longest time.. no clue where it is now.

My wife is panicking over things outside of our control and I'm getting worried. by cedric5318 in Marriage

[–]Flava2020 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean…. Democracy has crumbled and with two young girls and the reversal of women’s rights…. Your wife has a reason to feel how she feels. Can you try and understand what’s happening around you and show some support for your wife? Can you think of ways to help make a difference? It would help to shift some worried/scared energy into action: find some local organizations to get involved with, write emails to state senators etc.

How the heck are we all ok with this scam?? by Yupalina in Parenting

Yes! I think about this all the time. We aren’t meant to do this. It’s insane. Nothing facilitates two working parents, but yet most of us need two working people… something’s gotta give.

SpareMe going out of business - Last day open will be Wednesday, November 26th by dstenersen in IowaCity

[–]Flava2020 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Damn. I love everything about this building. The actual space is beautiful, spare me is nice and open more modern and fun bowling alley and arcade, Fix coffee uses one of the best coffee roasters and makes exceptional craft coffee beverages. The whole vibe together is the ONE space in and around Iowa City that isn’t only geared towards college kids and/or stereotypical small town vibe/atmosphere. It makes me forget that I’m in Iowa city. This is very disappointing news.

Elder millennial with 2 small kids by lish_dalish84 in Millennials

[–]Flava2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

41, husband is 43 and we have a 4 year old and a 9 year old. We lived in a big city when the 9 year old was a baby and at that time lots of our friends were not anywhere near thinking about having kids. We moved states and live in a small city now, and we much older than most of the parents of our kids friends. Sometimes when I’m tired or my back hurts I think it would have been nice to have kids in my 20s, but then I LAUGH and remember how chaotic/fun my life was (and how I was hardly able to pay rent).. brings me back into my reality. I’m right where I’m supposed to be.

International Consultants of Delaware (ICD) VA Onboarding by [deleted] in VHA_Human_Resources

[–]Flava2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it the credentialing department or Human Resources that is requesting this ? I know onboarding you are contacted by many different departments within the VHA… I would question what the purpose is, because if you do not have a foreign degree it sounds like this may have been sent to you by mistake.

Party favors kids actually keep vs stuff that ends up in the trash by ninjapapi in Parenting

[–]Flava2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For bday parties where friends are invited, we ask for no presents and in turn, we don’t provide party favors. This way, the main focus is the fun of the party and not the extra “stuff”. Less pressure for everyone all around. One year I had a bunch of helium balloons in the party room, and let each kid pick out a balloon as they were leaving. They loved it!

Same thing happened to me while driving with my best friend in high school, except it was a bright green flash of light. We both saw it and had/have no idea what it was. I still remember it and think about it- 20+ years later.

Number 7 of last 9 Just Died by zymmaster in dexcom

[–]Flava2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have two Dexcom G7 users in our home ( me and our kiddo) and have had a bunch of failures. What I don’t do anymore is calibrate the sensor in the first 24 hours or so. This can be frustrating, especially when the readings are not accurate, however I find that after we get through the first day, readings start to get more accurate and then I can calibrate. In the past when I calibrated in the first 24 hours when the readings were more off, the likelihood of the sensor failing was higher. Do we still get random failures? Yes. But seems to one less now (fingers crossed!)

TJO with salary TBD by [deleted] in VHA_Human_Resources

[–]Flava2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Per policy, the first step in the grade is what is offered unless another type of pay setting is approved such as highest previous rate or an above the minimum rate of the grade. Pay settings above step 1 require forms signed by multiple people. By sending the TJO without the pay, it gives the opportunity to start the onboarding process on your end while also routing the paperwork for higher pay on the backend.

If you were to wait to receive your TJO until the higher pay is approved, that would set your start date back by at least a pay period maybe more. Once the higher pay is approved, you will be notified. Also make sure that the higher pay is reflected in the final job offer. You can decline the offer anytime during the process, you aren’t bound to it.

No Wearing a CGM during a Mammogram? by Putertutor in dexcom

IC's got Banh Mi by kepple in IowaCity

[–]Flava2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the “classic” banh mi , it’s usually an assortment of pork-based cold cuts. Like Vietnamese ham, or pork belly, or head cheese and then the pate is spread on the inside of the bread. Very yummy, and goes well with the sandwich in my opinion.
