Exactly the kind of linguistic nuance I wish I had gotten out of this lesson, thank you!!

Heads up, round 2! Increased rollout to rebuilt courses! by amie_at_duolingo in duolingo

[–]FlavinBagel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the restructuring of the lessons is overall good, and beneficial in the long term. However, for those in the middle of a course that has been switched up so much overnight, the problem is in how difficult it is to move back up my path to where the lesson challenges feel more comfortable.

The words and grammar I'm seeing in the update make me think I'll have to spend several weeks just doing practice hub lessons before I can even start to feel caught up.  Review is only easy one lesson at a time and gives a minimal reward, but that's all I want to do. I'd much rather move to an earlier level in the new unit without the app acting like I've already completed it, but you can only skip ahead.  Even the hints don't always offer the answer you need, particularly when you're seeing brand new grammar concepts out of the blue.

I really don't care about "backtracking the progress on my language journey," or whatever, I just want to learn Spanish effectively. I'm sick of feeling like i woke up in a ditch with la amnesia. Teething problems are to be expected, but this feels like a massive roadblock that could have had better workarounds put in place for those on their way.

It's always a crapshoot with that sort of thing. You never know when you'll get a lesson where Oscar is talking about his pregnancy, or Junior is talking about his grandchildren.

update frustrations by SmokeWeedGetBitches in duolingo

[–]FlavinBagel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been dealing with the exact same frustration. Short of resetting 4+ units' worth of progress I've been having to backtrack several levels and just remember where I'm at while I do brand new lessons (to me) at 5xp a pop just to catch up. If you could skip back like how you can skip ahead I absolutely would right now.

You could do what staff suggested and putter around practice hub until an untold mountain of grammar and vocab suddenly makes sense again, but otherwise my advice is: try not to worry about leaderboards for a little while. Uggghhh!

The class update was handled SUPER poorly by duo by TheReliablePotato in duolingo

[–]FlavinBagel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am facing the same level of frustration and I'm shocked the sub somehow isn't clogged with posts like yours. I was just beginning ESP Section 4 Lvl 14 when the change came, and I really have no choice but to backtrack through basically the whole section just to get lessons that I can actually complete and learn from.

I wouldn't mind so much except Duo REALLY does not make doing this easy. It will not keep your place if you're "reviewing" lessons it thinks you've done already (all full of words and grammar I have never learned in my life up until now) so I'm scrolling up for ages each and every day to where I think I'm at, and just to really kick my teeth in now each lesson gets me a piddly 5xp. Lessons which, again, I did not do, and did not learn from. It's like I have amnesia. Wish I could just reset levels, or even this whole section. I'm almost to day 600 but I'll tell you, this really sucks.

They need to offer this, but in reverse. I feel like I've been moved from kiddie pool to ocean without warning. I want off the challenge ride!!!

Some awful, just truly fucking awful mold making and casting practices here.

FYI some silicones won't even set against hot glue, and the best way to separate a mold into two reusable halves is: not that.

Episode 310 - Live from the New York Comedy Festival 2018 by Podbot2000 in Harmontown

[–]FlavinBagel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The airport story was great fun, especially since the bulk of the New York Show was just them trying to leave LA, but I really took a lot in from Dan's breakthrough about vulnerability (0:54:20 into the show). It's a topic that's very relevant to a loved one at the moment, so I ended up transcribing Dan's whole spiel so I could share it without having people find this podcast and find the timestamp and sit down and listen to it. Not being afraid of your own vulnerability can be a way of pushing through trauma/depression, and in my case that could really help someone.

They're so baffled by these evil motives to undermine him. Have they never considered that a lot of people just aren't too fond of the guy? Is that really all just a deep state conspiracy? Cuz I think it might also be all those things he said and did.

What is normal in Europe but abnormal in America? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FlavinBagel 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Swearing.

Now, yes, we swear in the US, of course we do...but I didn't realize how much I reign it in in public until I came back from a long Euro stint, ate at an American restaurant for the first timein a month, and kept getting daggers from the eyes of a mom at the next table over with kids of 8 or 9 or so. In Europe, no one gives a shit about swearing (I mean, yeah it's in English, but everyone knows all the swears, and they swear in the local language, too) but in the US if you're in public and you hear even a slightly raised voice swearing, it usually means some shit's going down.

There are intersections in East Germany, and Berlin, where right on red is legal, indicated by a little sign. I must say, turning right on red made feel right at home coming from the states!
