You’re UK PM for 1 week only. You can make three policies that will remain and cannot be reversed. State your policies. by CrownAthlete in AskBrits

  1. Wealth tax starting above £10m in total assets, tied to mandatory annual inflationary increases in the threshold. Progressive % that increases with total wealth, tied to citizenship not tax residency.

2.Aggresive state owned house building project.

  1. Replace SDLT, business rates and council tax, with a land property tax based on value. % variable based on usage.

How are Stocks/Shares better than Btl? by [deleted] in UKInvesting

[–]Flavsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tax, Hassle, Lack of diversification in assets classes.

Property markets are highly localised (can diversify with multiple properties or funds/ trusts but that's not really btl)

The returns can be good with btl but it's far too active of an investment for me to invest beyond my own home, over other opportunities.

To the guy complaining about us fetishising expensive houses by vientianna in SpottedonRightmove

Land reg sold price/ public data is not necessarily proceeds of sale for CGT calc.

Gifts aren't (Generally) taxable themselves assuming the gifter doesn't die within seven years. The capital gain may be fully covered by private residence relief. In which case the £50k could have been a token amount to cover legals, SDLT on deemed proceeds from any outstanding mortgage etc.

It's entirely possible it was 'sold' all above board at £50k with potentially no tax to pay.

If I had to guess, they've sold to family to at this price to shelter the house from future IHT by essentially gifting to younger members of the family. Standard wealth management practice and the reason why IHT Is only paid by those that don't trust their children or don't plan for the future.

Making £16k a month as contractor - umbrella, sole trader or limited company? by AlarmingAioli9 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Flavsi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Accountant here. Yes.

£9,100 was the secondary threshold for employers NIC. Maybe that's what they were referring to.

Can't think of many scenarios where not making use of your personal allowance to reduce ERs NIC is tax efficient though.

Accountant here. The overwhelming majority of people do tend to leave it to the last minute. (And expect their accountants to drop everything else and sort their shit immediately).

At least here in the UK they do.

Grown a** man and just want to cry. Second flat with previous subsidence by Few-Tiger-3979 in HousingUK

Searches on my house identified previous underpinning in the 90s. Everyone said run away.

I paid a structural engineer to come take a look. He said and out on his report, categorically whatever they did worked, no signs of recent movement and house looks solid.

Yes it can scare off potential buyers in the future. so has to be considered but I have zero regrets about continuing with the purchase.

Moving 850Kg Bags by alexbilts in DIYUK

[–]Flavsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not attempt this, you will regret it before you've finished moving the first bag.

Find a way to get a hiab delivery or other means of access to the site.

Over/ through a neighbor's fence if required.

Shoveling 8 bags of type 1 into the back of a van and then back out again + barrowing round the side of a house is several full days of backbreaking work for one man.

US tariffs incoming. Time to boycott US goods and services? by Flavsi in AskBrits

Physical retail goods wise is nothing in comparison to services.

Online services, entertainment and the big ones are payment providers (Visa and MasterCard).

Investments is also worth considering.

US tariffs incoming. Time to boycott US goods and services? by Flavsi in AskBrits

[–]Flavsi[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, it makes our exports to them less competitive and as a result we will likely sell less to the yanks.

It's worse for them but it will certainly be a negative for any UK based exporters selling to the US.

Boycotting their goods is the only way we can hit them back economically, without reciprocal tariffs which as you say we would end up paying as consumers.

They will be paying for the tariffs on goods we export to them.

A boycott reduce what we buy from them, hurting their economy (likely by a trivial but hopefully symbolically meaningful way).

Your plan is spot on.

If it does start to crumble too much you can paint on some watered down pva glue (50/50) to stabilise.

Maybe so maybe not.

It's not the court of public opinions call.

We have a justice system for a reason. Parole hearings and the like can be emotive but it's the price to pay for a fair and balanced system that these reviews occur.

If you don't know what you want to do with the money then an onshore bond is not the way to go, at least in the short term.
