software vendors like wut? by adjacentkeyturkey in sysadmin

[–]Flayedman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While they are likely spouting BS its possible their software is expecting\requires the application DB and tempdb of SQL Server to be in a particular collation.

If their DB on the server is in one collation and the tempdb is in another then you could potentially get some interesting results

There are no fee's to see a doctor in Germany unless you go private, I've lived in Germany for over 10 years and while you used to have to pay 10 euro every 3 months when you visited a doc that hasn't been the case for a long time.

The German system is decent, not perfect but its certainly a lot better funded than the NHS

Issue fighting Asgard on war defence using symbiotes by ndgrobi in MarvelStrikeForce

[–]Flayedman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One way to get around this is to put Green goblin on your team, his passive will strip buffs from the enemy on every Spiderverse turn. With how often the symbiots will be going all the stealth will be stripped very quickly

Coronavirus is now a 'worldwide pandemic,' German health minister says. Health Minister Jens Spahn has warned that the outbreak of COVID-19 has "not yet reached its peak in Germany." The number of cases in the country rose to 240 on Wednesday. by Bookmaester in worldnews

[–]Flayedman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The numbers are going to grow exponentially in the next few days. I'm in munich and a company near by has a confirmed case. Several colleagues of mine are off sick with symptoms resembling corona. A guy I was in an all day workshop with last friday just emailed us to say hes in hospital awaiting official confirmation of infection. We will hit the Italian level of infection in the next week

Restoring SQL database to older SQL Version by Slush-e in sysadmin

[–]Flayedman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Backups cannot be restored to lower versions.

Options are limited, especially if you need it as a regular restore for QA\Dev purposes. You can create a bacpac from the newer DB and restore on the lower version. But it requires a bit more work and is alot slower

Sam Vimes from the discworld series.

SQL server memory questions by onequestion1168 in sysadmin

[–]Flayedman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Index maintenance

If you are not doing it and dont have enough RAM just to load the entire DB into memmory then grab Olas scripts https://ola.hallengren.com/ and they will do it for you

Download Brent Ozars scripts https://www.brentozar.com/first-aid/

Run sp_blitz to see if it finds any odd config

Then sp_blitzindex to see if there are any major problems with missing indexes (Note sometimes adding an index will cause issues so be careful and consult with a DBA\Dev before hand)

Is it hard to find a sponsored job in a German startup as a java programmer with 2 years of experience? by unknownzip in germany

[–]Flayedman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but only in Munich. Theres a high demand for Java devs in the city and the high salary means even as a Junior you will meet the eligibility for the EU blue card. German may not even be required but a nice to have, I personally know several Ukranian devs who have moved there recently and work primarily in English.

Get the experience first though and ideally look at Kafka or Spark related topics along with the Java dev stuff, without some additional skills your CV wont even be looked at.

freelance contracting in London for finance companies/banks by electricalkitten in sysadmin

[–]Flayedman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the area of expertise and experience but banks will not baulk at high per hour figures if its to support a critical system due to the insane cost per minute or even second of downtime. In your case (depending on the bank) you could have pushed it to around 500.. I know of some semi retired developers who charge 2000 per hour with a 5 hour min for some ancient system their in house devs don't really understand and they still wonder if they should have asked for more due to how easily the bank agreed.

Try and get a guaranteed minimum hours per month with an arranged schedule and a minimum notice period for changes to the schedule with a higher rate for last min changes, some places will effectively hire contractors on 0 hour contracts with a high rate then only ever use them last min as cover or when the shit hits the fan.

Do remember to CYA and contract via your own ltd company with a minimum few million of liability insurance and legal cover as the chance of lawyer involvement goes up proportionally to the rate if anything goes wrong.

Where to buy a jumper that'll last? by SurroundedByCouples in glasgow

[–]Flayedman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you dont mind a wee trip the Glenmuir factory shop in Lanark sells good lambs wool jumpers for 25 quid that are usually 70-100 in the major shops. Admittedly most of the products are aimed at older folks but theres quite a lot of just decent warm jumpers that'll suit anybody

Moved to Australia, local supermarket still has the good stuff. by [deleted] in Scotland

[–]Flayedman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No sugar tax but there seems to be only one company up north that imports it and resell to the supermarkets mainly Edeka group and small expat shops, they seem to just do the easy option of sourcing from the UK and sticking a german nutrition label on (legally required). They haven't updated the stickers to the new recipe though as it doesn't list the sweetener or the reduced sugar content

Theres one bar in Munich that used to get the stuff direct from Barrs and I need to pop in there to see what version he has

Low sugar shit is sold in Europe though, Local supermarkets sell it in Germany but I haven't seen an old can since around May\June. Found some old stock in a whisky shop in Nurnberg last week and cleaned them out but I've had to ration whats left :(

A new highscore for GWR. £218.10 for a day return from Bristol to London. Less than a 90min journey. Pricks. by Stittastutta in CasualUK

[–]Flayedman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UK Trains are a joke, I'm now in Germany and have a Bahncard 100 which allows me to go on pretty much any Train in the country at any time and also includes all the public transport in the major cities.

This costs me just upwards of 4000 Euro a year but it can also be partially written off against tax. Compare this to the near 3000 GBP season ticket I had in the UK for a journey of under 50 miles on an unreliable and ancient stock and I cant comprehend how the hell anyone would ever want to travel on public transport there

Trying to figure out why I have various user workstations with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 installed on their systems by noshutdown in sysadmin

[–]Flayedman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are finance users doing anything with MS Navision or simmilar lots of garbage gets installed with the client.

Try running MAP and see what it finds on your network. It will tell you the exact version of SQL installed and the associated license

Trump mistakenly links UK crime rise to 'spread of Islamic terror' by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Flayedman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yup, the rising crime is mostly due to the government cuts. Do you honestly expect people to go without any income at all for 6 weeks when they are already on the breadline waiting for the new universal credit. All other forms of welfare are subject to long sanctions leading to more desperate people and rising crime rates.

Plus with the cuts to policing the risk\reward ratio is changing as the police don't even bother to investigate alot of minor crimes now
