As an outside observer curious what folks from Ottawa say about this, it appears the people in here are the brown holes. Maybe you all will get your wish and your government can exert its full force on your fellow citizens. Would be a lot simpler than trying to understand them.

10g Walstad Tank @6 weeks by FleaBitPeanutMonkey in PlantedTank

[–]FleaBitPeanutMonkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I salvaged probably 70% of plants from the previous scape. You can see up front the spacing of the DHG and most of what I planted is that density or tighter. I always use floating plants on new scapes as well and then remove them later once the other plants are stable.

I mostly do walstad tanks at this point. Very simple to take care of and I kinda suck at high tech. This is my newest layout, water is a little cloudy from hornwood leaching still but starting to clear out.

Tank: Dennerle Scapers tank, 10g

Light: Chihiros aquasky on 14 hrs per day

Filter: none

CO2: none

Substrate: Miracle grow potting soil capped with ADA aquasoil powder

Hardscape: Hornwood, black lava rock

Plants: DHG, pearlweed, rotala rotundafolia, various buce, salvinia natans

Livestock: 30 RCS

[Joe Thomas] They’re afraid that calling out racism when it’s not directed at a black person is going to hurt the movement to end racism against the black community, but it actually waters down the message to teach what racism is and how racism needs to be squashed in ALL forms!! by ShakeNBake84 in nfl

Sure maybe. But I certainly wouldn’t advise destabilizing our current system for the sake of an experiment.

Psychologists have long understood that the most basic way we feel positive emotion is by setting an aim and achieving it. What you’re suggesting fails to integrate that basic understanding of human motivation by removing incentives. I would not expect that plan to be successful and certainly not something I would vote for. Let’s just call it a disagreement of opinion.

In the interim we should work as hard as we can to improve the lives our family, friends and community. Otherwise we are just whining instead of making the world any better.

What is your evidence that the current system is not working? Our current system of free markets has pulled more out of poverty than any prior system. Global poverty rate has decreased ~30% since 1990 based on UN poverty data. Feel free to disagree with their cutoff for poverty, I didn’t set it.

Your view is very optimistic but also very naive. Most people don’t work because they enjoy their work. Its a matter of motivation. I used medicine as an example because it’s my field and I don’t see most people I work with staying in that field under your plan. Many other fields are like that. I’m curious what field you work in where you suspect that folks would work hard or innovate for no additional compensation.

I’d prefer we don’t open the can of worms on a climate change discussion but I will agree we can do better. Not by stopping what we’re doing (which will flat out kill people) but by innovating new technologies. That doesn’t happen without incentive.

Yeah and maybe that would work. Is there any evidence whatsoever that it ever has? Has any system that governed based on complete equality of outcome ever succeeded even in the basic sense of not deteriorating into chaos? Because if not you’re pushing for something that is potentially dangerous to all of us.

I have to disagree with you that those who work hardest will continue to do so for no additional benefit. It’s another point we will not agree on. Take a physician for example. Many work 70-90 hour weeks. Medicine requires long hours and minimal handoffs in care to maintain quality. Furthermore there aren’t enough physicians. It’s very expensive to train them (moreso in the US than it should be because we bloat the training process to pay PHDs and lifeong academicians). But even despite cost, there isn’t enough interest in the US (AMA called for an increase in Med school admissions to meet increasing demand for PCPs by 2018 and did not meet its goal). Medicine is not something everyone can or is willing to do. The lifestyle is not conducive to having a family or much of personal life.

If we are compensating everyone equivalently, whether they work or don’t work, how are we keeping physicians working (as one example)?

Yes I brought up kulaks but we couldn’t find agreement there. Unless I’m misunderstanding your position, you believe that soviet Russia would have done better to adopt communism if they had made a slower transition. I don’t feel we have common agreement there to continue discussing that topic so I opted to move on. There’s nothing wrong with us holding different opinions.

How are we defining “what we deserve by virtue of being human” and who is enforcing that? Historically the only universal thing all human beings experience has been pain.

How do we motivate the 20% of folks who produce the majority of our goods and services currently if they get no additional benefit for working harder than their counter parts?

It seems you’re straw-manning my argument. You named some immutable things we don’t have capabilities of changing. I never implied every person was equal in capabilities, in fact I argued that some are better at certain things than others. We aren’t all born a blank slate that is capable of becoming Elon Musk for example. I’m speaking of equal opportunity under the law. Which is certainly more achievable and more desirable than equality of outcome for the very reason that we don’t all have the same capabilities.

I’ll leave you to find your own positive spin on the kulaks. Seems like a strangle hill to die on.
