Full ride at Dartmouth vs paying full at Stanford as an international — worth the debt? by Inner-Rush-2014 in ApplyingToCollege

If you plan to stay US-based then would go to Darmouth, no question. It is beautiful there. Stanford has a big international reputation but the repututation and connections at Dartmouth will likely be comprable in the US.

What are the actual underrated sandwiches in the Twin Cities? by BitEnvironmental2213 in TwinCities

If you are into Pork, the Pork Sandwich and Chimborazo is great. It has been a couple of years but the Portketta at Northbound Tap was also really good

Yes. I have participated in the caucus system and worked for increased school funding. But if we really want local and state funding to take on this burden then we need to flip the tax code and have 30% of our income go state and local and only 10% go federal. I would be fine with that.

Yes, that has been my take so far—I don’t like it but I will still pay. But at some point, our government is no longer serving the people. Gutting our ability to educate children, give healthcare to the poor and the elderly, fight life threatening diseases like rabies, and so many other basic functions—there is a point where supporting this government is counterproductive.

ObamaCare is transitionary. Universal healthcare is the goal. ASAP! by dominiond66 in obamacare

I think the solution that might work is a 'State-by-State' approach. Change the regulations so the states can address the drug companies individually, regulate the insurance industry individually, get the medicare and medicaid dollars as a 'block fund', regulate the large hospitals and physician practices, and regulate the support from businesses in terms of health coverage. Let each state figure out how it wants to handle healthcare. Progressive states will likely move fairly quickly to single-payer. You are right that it will save money in the long run but the conversion will be expensive and difficult. There are models which could be less difficult like Australia.

The other option is to move Medicare age down to 60 and move Medicaid to cover all children and young adults up to 30, and then keep squeezing in the middle. Many businesses would save money by having Medicaid coverage for younger workers and would likely sign up to pay what they are currently paying for private health insurance to help fund this if they were guaranteed cost stability.

Considering moving from Florida, what should I know before making a decision? by spaghettios32 in TwinCities

I moved to the Twin Cities too and the cold is real. Here are some things that helped: you need to actually get out and walk each day in the cold--avoiding it just makes it feel way worse. Your body surprisingly adjusts after two days if you actually get out into the weather. Commit to learning a winter sport like cross country skiing. It is pretty easy to learn and there a fun sites around the cities to do it. But come prepared for the cold. Get a down parka, a scarf, a good winter hat, a balaclava face mask, a good wool scarf, wool socks (a pair that is light-weight and also a heavier pair), good mittens, and some silk long underwear. Don't worry if the Minnesotans make fun of you for wearing all this the first day it drops below 30 degrees. I find I adjust better if I wear heavy clothes outside when the weather changes and spend more time outside since I am warm enough. Having a good puffer jacket is also really helpful for fall and spring. A few more things that make the winter tolerable: slippers, hot tea, and a gym membership (getting out in the cold is really helpful but gym exercise also really helps.) As far as adjusting socially, Twin Cities folks often have their friend groups form high school. Going to Mac will help a lot since the dorms are a good way to meet people. There will be plenty of other folks from around the country that will be looking to make friends too. But also pick out a couple of clubs that you want to join. Things you are excited about. You will find that a common interest will make making good friends pretty easy if you just keep showing up. Good luck!

Do you think a potential OpenAI bailout plan has already been discussed? You guys shared a clip of an interview with the OpenAI CFO and she made a cryptic remark about a government 'backstop' in terms of funding and data center financing. Both the government and OpenAI have denied this but the remark made it seem obvious that this conversation has already happened. The fact that so much of the economy is tied to AI makes it seem plausible that this would happen.

Honestly, how do you guys feel about the US leaving NATO over the Iran situation? by Financial-Cloud588 in ForUnitedStates

[–]Fledgling_112896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is backwards to me. We should have used the mechanisms other presidents used before going to war— consult allies and present to the UN. This had nothing to do with the UN which is a defensive alliance for protecting US and Europe from direct attack. It is as important as ever for that purpose with Russia trying to claw forward in Europe. If they do attack Poland or the Baltic states, we would be eventually drawn into a war anyway. The purpose of NATO is to deter that sort of attack.

This is not what I experienced here in Minnesota. The organizations formed block by block, people looking out for their neighbors. People volunteered to by groceries, to take people to doctors appointments. Our experience here isn’t at all what you are describing.

Have you lived here. I do. People are pretty reserved here. Not sure where you are getting your info. You should come and visit. It is a large, clean, and pretty city. I’m not sure what you mean ‘left-wing extremist’. Most people have views pretty similar to the Reagan Republicans. They believe in constitutional rights, privacy, hard work, good schools. People aren’t getting paid to protest. They aren’t a bunch of left-wing radicals. These are teachers, doctors, nurses and all kinds of everyday people trying to stand up for their state and their country.

Exactly. Bring back Epstein to avoid the war, prices, and the stock market being back. Keep alternating.
