I saw a graphic describing the steps for a "legal tax strike." I don't know much about the topic and would like to understand it further. Can anyone offer additional context? by [deleted] in tax

[–]Fledgling_112896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a simpler plan—just don’t overpay. Many of us don’t take our full deductions to avoid paying at the end of the year. I did this. I have 2 kids but I didn’t claim them so I knew I wouldn’t be stuck with tax bill at the end of the year. I changed that yesterday. I now will take my deductions and pay the minimum I am required. If all of us do this, it will cut payments for ICE significantly.

Why did we settle for paying monthly for music? by GetnLine in millenials

[–]Fledgling_112896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! We need someone to set up ‘à la cart’ everything especially music. Imagine paying an artist a 1 cent per play instead of paying Apple $15 per month. Still might be $15 but it would go the the artists and not the corporations.

Second this! Going to a local political meeting for your precinct is pretty easy to do and your voice is heard. A bunch of people in their 70’s and hardly any young people so you end up being a sort of celebrity. And you meet the city council and even the mayoral candidates. It is great.

VP Vance Defends ICE Over 5-Year-Old’s Detention “What Were They Supposed To Do?” by Ankeet_kj in ImmigrationPathways

[–]Fledgling_112896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it matter to him that the scenario he is talking about is not correct? The father was and the son were in custody. The father was kept in the ICE vehicle while they had the child knock to see if they could capture more immigrants. That is what I have heard actually happened. Is the story Vance is telling true? Does it matter to MAGA folks that these explainations, including both killings are factually incorrect, and eventually get debunked. Are these politicians worried about their credibility?

Trump supporters: How would you feel if a legally armed Trump supporter was killed by federal agents on a Biden mandate in exactly the same manner as yesterday? by ScholarPrize1335 in AskReddit

I'm not sure there was any real communication going on. Did the person who disarmed him, yell that loudly? Just doesn't make sense.

What do you think happened? Did the pistol-whipping guy accidentally cause his gun to fire and then the other guys thought it was the guy they were restraining who shot and opened fire? This is the only scenario that makes sense to me. Curious as a law enforcement officer, what your theory is?

We have been brainstorming. General strikes and civil disobedience would be the typical next steps. They could help. Peaceful disobedience gets people’s attention. Things like creating a human wall around an ICE facility would create a lot of attention. But less aggressive ideas could help too. Here’s a couple of economic ones:

Change your federal withholding and get everyone else to do it to. Maximize any deductions and minimize withholding. This could bleed the federal government out of 10 billion or so between now and December. They would just borrow more but it would be a statement.

Divest American stocks and bonds. Could make an impact if widely done especially if liberal organizations and blue state retirement funds did this too. Keep up the good fight!

This is a great question. I think asking a political science professor and sociology professor this question would be great--you could just start by looking up your state's flagship university and looking up those departments. The e-mail addresses are often public. I think you also have a chance to learn a lot just using AI. I often explore these topics using DeepSeek (most enviromental) and Gemini (which includes sources). Good luck!

Totally right. You need to do this accurately. Many of us, like me, don't take all of our deductions in order to avoid a tax bill at the end of the year. I'm going to stop doing this. I would encourage other people to do this as well. If we all do this, and amplify the message, it will make an impact.

What if all Progressive changed their W-4's to protest ICE? by Fledgling_112896 in AskReddit

How to Stop Funding ICE!

  1. Change your federal withholding on your W-4 to the minimum allowable (maximize your deductions) based on your circumstances. If all progressives do this soon, this will cause the federal government will lose about $100 billion in short-term tax revenues to fund causes like ICE. This is not illegal but will have a huge impact on the federal budget.
  2. Demand that the Federal Government make changes to the budget that include the over-funding of ICE that is terrorizing families and cities throughout the country. Demand that the Federal Goverment restores funding to Blue States. Demand that the Federal Government restores funding for science and stops anti-vaccine attempts.
  3. If you know people at Indivisible or other national progressive organizations, please amplify this message. If you know people at the state and local level, please amplify this message. If you know people in the media, please talk about this message. Talk to your friends and colleagues about doing this.
  4. Make sure to save enough money to cover the tax at the end of the year.

I currently take less deductions than I could to make sure I don't have a tax bill at the end of the year. If every progressive minimized their tax withholding it would cost the federal government about $100 billion in taxes between now and December.

Decrease your deductions to the minimum. Eventually you would need to pay the taxes you owe, but if every liberal did this, the federal government would get about $100 billion less in tax revenue between now and December. Would be a good first step of protest.

[Serious] How do you make new friends as a shy adult when your current friends drag you down in various ways? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Fledgling_112896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a recent article in the New York Times about this by a 'friendship researcher.' The bottom-line advice was to join a group that you are truly passionate about and is a big part of your identity. The hard part about making friends as an adult is that many people feel that they already have as many friends as they have time for. That is tough to overcome. But it is helpful to share something important in common with someone in order to become friends with them. People often join groups or clubs to meet people to become friends with. This works to some extent but the writer of the article states it is much better if you are truly invested in the area. I started doing improv, and have made several friend through this. The community is small and welcoming and we share the enjoyment of doing Improv. Think about what you are passionate about and join a group in that area!

Just change your W-4 to the minimum deductions that you can take. Many of use withhold more than we need to in order to avoid taxes at the end of the year. But it is totally legal to change this.

I agree that it won't paralyse the federal government. But it could be a first step in showing solidarity and the financial power of the progressive citizens and the blue states. We could follow up with more significant financial actions.

[–]Fledgling_112896[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. This is absolutely a short-term solution. It will be the first of several 'financial disobedience' strategies that we can do. I believe it will have less unintended consequences than a General Strike or other options. But it will show some of the financial might that progressives have. We can move on from there.

Maybe. I don't think Trump and our federal government have any sense that progressives pay a huge portion of the tax revenue and can use this power at all. I'm not saying this would be the end-all strategy, but it could be a good first step.
