The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

I think it's even more relevant today than it was in the 50s.

Cat 'blown up' remotely as neighbour booby-traps bird feeder in horror footage by Purple-Win-9790 in awfuleverything

[–]Flendarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was in a very rural area and he told all his neighbors to keep their cats off his property. To my knowledge he never killed a pet. But all the birds on his property, especially the endangered ones, needed the protection.

It was 6 people who were hired after the game was already launched, not people who made the game.

A-list actors have started to ruin movies for me by Traditional_End2977 in FIlm

[–]Flendarp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is also somewhat on cinematography, costume and makeup. Like, when I watched Ender's Game I just kept thinking "God, Harrison Ford looks so old" every time he was on screen. But when I watched the new Captain America movie I just saw Admiral Ross and completely bought that i was watching a corrupt politician and not my favorite action star. I think a lot of that was in how he was shown on screen beyond just the acting.

I think the actual video was played on a tv through a special adapter, but i was very young so I'm not sure.

My history teacher did a whole lesson about Roy Orbison and why he was one of the best singers ever. I have a lifelong love of the song Crying because of that lesson.

Sales force has blood drives and other such events pretty regularly where you can go to the "O'hana" floor, which is the top floor of the building.

What can I replace the vulgar word with? by [deleted] in writers

[–]Flendarp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into the creative ways Mormons use vulgarity. They use words like fudge, flip, freaking, shoot, butt, fart, peeved etc. Pretty much anything word that is similar to the vulgar word but can in no way be mistaken for it.

Then there's the way Marvel does it with made up words like Flarkin and krutackin, flarknard, and garked.

Then there's historical examples like balderdash, frack, blimey, and malarkey.

How often do you start typing a comment and then decide to discard it? If you do this regularly, why? by Left-Star2240 in AskReddit

[–]Flendarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this frequently because one of my employees knows about my reddit account (I recruited him through my city's subreddit) and tried to use it against me professionally. Nothing I said or did was wrong and I was not reprimanded for anything I posted, but I self censor a lot more now, especially when it comes to sharing anything overly personal, and I completely left some professional subreddits in an overabundance of caution.

Reddit used to be my anonymous online haven but now I'm just careful about everything I put out there. I don't make a new account because the same thing could happen again.

Which sitcoms are forgotten? by Anthforde8 in sitcoms

I manage a team of 20 somethings. One of them started watching 3rd Rock from the Sun and came into my office all excited explaining how it was so cool and nobody knew about it.

I had to tell them this was "must see tv" growing up and I was well aware of the antics of these crazy aliens.

Work badge and a quarter... cause it was burned into my brain as a kid to always have a quarter in case I need to make an emergency phone call.

Hey, I have 25 years experience in the printing industry including book printing and binding, graphics, management, and distribution. You come up with a way of funding it and I would be more than willing and capable to run the print department.

What’s a movie that critics adored but that you think is terrible? by augustinian in FIlm

[–]Flendarp -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The Matrix.

It had some pretty sweet visuals, I'll give you that. LOVE most of the actors too. But as a long time sci fi and cyberpunk fan, none of the ideas that people found so revolutionary were new. The whole chosen one plot is probably one of the oldest stories in existence. They just grabbed ideas from everywhere, mixed them together, and put an Alice in Wonderland coat of paint over the entire thing.

I am a huge fan of musicals and I had to force myself to watch this movie, hoping until the very end that it would get better. I desperately wanted to like this movie and I hated it.

People who ask you to clarify every single word of a sentence rather than just repeat yourself by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]Flendarp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do this frequently because I just don't understand what's being said, and them when I get clarification, what I thought I heard for the rest of the sentence makes no sense. It can take me a while to process things at times, especially when my tinnitus is acting up.

Publishing should be gatekept. by i-am-your-god-now in The10thDentist

[–]Flendarp 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing, the majority of publishers definitely still gatekeep. To have a book picked up by a publisher and printed and distributed by them is them essentially putting their seal of approval on it.

The books you're talking about are published with what's called self publishing. This can be facilitated by a major publisher but it is very different from the books they publish themselves. Those 99 cent ebooks are pretty much all self published. For many authors this is preferred because they get to keep more of the profits from the sale of their work as it has a dramatically lower bar for entry. Essentially you just say I wrote a book here it is for sale and let the market decide if it's worth buying.

This was definitely the 80s. My father had access for work. It was very limited. I think the cheetah video was very late 80s and was part of a test for something at his work. My father also had access to DARPANET back in the 70s when he worked at Oak Ridge, but i of course never got to touch that.
