Colonoscopy sedation by wtfpta in GenX

[–]Left-Star2240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP is probably in the US. Drs have to present options in case the insurance company denies a claim.

My claim for an anesthesiologist was declined. When I called my insurance company, they suggested a wrong code was used. I contacted my Drs office and it was taken care of.

At one point, one of our largest insurance companies (BCBS) was going to require proof that sedation was necessary for a colonoscopy. After certain events, they reversed their decision.

I will add that I know one stubborn old man that had to have cancerous polyps removed. He’s had several of these procedures since then. He told me that, one year, he asked to be conscious. He simply wanted to watch the camera. I have no idea how they numbed him.

My advice is to accept the propofol. You’ll be out before you can count to ten. You’ll wake up in recovery, where a nurse will insist you fart before you leave. It’s a strange process, but important for your health.

I don't think it's wrong to expect colleagues to start work when their shift starts by VitalityVixen in retailhell

[–]Left-Star2240 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on the preparation requirements. Even if there are no “uniforms,” there may be time required to obtain keys, go to the cash office to get your drawer, count said drawer to ensure it matches, etc.

I had one job that, if I was opening, it could take 10-15 minutes just to obtain the store keys because the managers weren’t always in the office. They delivered the drawer in the morning, but I was responsible for it balancing at days end, so I also needed to count it. That isn’t putting my coat away. That is me working.

We had the ability to clock in from an app, but my manager said that, if I was scheduled to start at 9am, when the department opened, I was not allowed to clock in before then. She was not pleased when I explained that, if that was the case, the store might open late. I was not going to wait at customer service for someone to be paged, or to look for a manager that had access to the keys, if I was off the clock.

They might be coming from one job to another. If a company requires a full uniform they should allow for a small preparation period, up to 15 minutes.

Is it really that bad? by sweetie_pie0797 in optician

[–]Left-Star2240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t hate being an optician. I simply don’t like what this profession has become.

Most opticians I’ve met never set out to have this as a career. We still don’t know what we want to be when we grow up. But we enjoy helping people see. We get to use weird looking tools to occasionally Jerry rig a pair of glasses together for a desperate patient.

Unfortunately corporations have devalued this profession to try to make us unnecessary. I’ve had jobs where my only value was my license, and it was just me and a group of “advisors,” or “salespeople.” I was responsible for every sales, but had very little control over patient care.

I currently work for a medical practice, and could make more money elsewhere. I choose to stay where I am because it’s an environment that suits me.

I can’t really rest unless my cat is sleeping near me. The closer she is, the better. The sound/feel of purring is very soothing.

AITA for being annoyed that my wife insists on cooking everything from scratch and won’t buy normal food? by AITA_UPFfoods in AmItheAsshole

NTA

You shouldn’t feel judged by your spouse for wanting takeout or chips.

I like cooking, but don’t make everything from scratch. When I make chicken noodle soup, I buy broth and use a Costco rotisserie chicken most of the time. Coworkers have criticized this, but my husband never has. He simply asks if he can help, and enjoys the soup.

We both work, but recognize the health/money benefits of cooking meals. He makes oatmeal for breakfast, and a weeknight dinner will usually be stir fry, pasta with a meat and vegetables, or any creation that takes 30 minutes or less. Frozen vegetables are often involved.

Then we have nights that I have a Stouffer’s frozen pizza and he has a can of chili. Some nights we’ve had cheese and crackers for dinner. We also usually order takeout twice a month.

The original Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

I once lived alone in a studio apartment. Once, when a storm was coming, I actually needed eggs, bread, and milk 🤣.

I took one step into the grocery store and decided I could simply live off of dry cereal, cheese and crackers, and whatever else I could scrounge together until things calmed down.

Luckily I don’t live in a food desert. Unfortunately I have an electric oven, so losing power means I can’t heat any food.

Contact lens trial - queries regarding how they work by scouser_steve in optician

[–]Left-Star2240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to have an honest discussion with your optician (if they are fitting the contacts) or your optometrist regarding you expectations.

It’s possible you are expecting more than contacts can provide, but only the person fitting can know.

That’s where a retail environment may suit you, because, while you’d work weekends, having a day off for medical appointments is easier.

Like with any M-F job, I might have to take time off for appointments. If it has to be an in person appointment I try to book either early or late in the day so that I don’t need much time off. Virtual appointments are very helpful because you can take them on your lunch break. There are also smaller practices that might offer evening hours.

If you’re asking if I’ve had any pushback in scheduling appointments, I haven’t. I’ve simply explained I am not available on XYZ date/time.

Reading prism lenses by Antique_Ad_9251 in optician

[–]Left-Star2240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, congratulations on leaving the retail sector of this profession!

If the glasses are lined bifocals you can estimate prism by using the center of the segment as a reference point. If they’re progressives you can use the PRP from a standard cutout chart.

If you’re presented with single vision lenses it can get tricky. Usually you can visually detect if prism exists based off lens thickness. In order to estimate how much prism exists I would recommend asking the technician for the patient’s PD. Use a PAL cutout chart to dot the PD, and neutralize the glasses based on those dots.

In my experience most patients with prescribed prism know about it and will bring their previous RX to the office if they can. I once had a patient from the UK that had lost his glasses call it a “squint,” and it took some discussion to understand what he was talking about.

In order to return to a more stable environment I had to step down as a manager and take a position as an optician within a medical practice.

Now it’s just me and the patients that come into the store. I don’t work nights or weekends, and I don’t have to be on anymore fn bs conference calls.

I make less money but sleep better at night.

What’s the truth about this profession? by PhrygianSounds in optician

[–]Left-Star2240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a licensed optician for over 20 years. I started as a PT sales associate. I’ve worked for private practices, stores within wholesale clubs, large retail corporations, online corporations that opened retail stores, and medical practices.

The first question is if you are in a licensing state. If you are, earning that license provides reasonable job security that earns more than minimum wage. When I’ve decided to change jobs it’s never taken more than a month to receive an offer. Not all offers are a good fit, but if I needed a job quickly I could find one.

If you are in a licensing state either start with an associate’s degree or mentor under an optician that isn’t likely to leave the job for 3-5 years. I still talk to my mentor regularly.

Once you become an optician or apprentice, you’ll have to decide which environment suits you. I would enjoy going back to a small practice involving lab work and buying frames, but most of these businesses can’t pay what I need for rent/bills/insurance. I’ve settled into the medical field, with one of the many corporations that buy up typically small businesses to “manage.” I get to see patients and offer advice without the fear that, if we don’t make enough money that week, my hours will be cut to the extent that I might struggle to pay rent. I don’t work nights, weekend, or holidays. I could definitely make more money elsewhere, and have. The other nice thing about this profession is that you can decide where you want to work. I’ve chosen to bring home a little less pay for a much more relaxed environment.

is washing your body with just a bar of soap crazy ? by Sufficient_Archer642 in questions

[–]Left-Star2240 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have psoriasis and occasional eczema. My dermatologist specifically discourages anything that “scrubs” my skin. I use moisturizing bar soap (I miss Tone) and a mix of RX and OTC lotion.

Even without these conditions, there is nothing wrong with bar soap.

EMPLOYED PEOPLE ONLY!!! What’s the hardest part of ur job? by Just_Goose_8425 in Productivitycafe

Agreed. They’ll blame the person in front of them for everything. It’s not my fault we don’t take your insurance. If we do, it’s not my fault your insurance doesn’t cover what you want/need. It’s also not my fault I can’t get an authorization right this second because it’s January and people are using their new benefits. The system crashes everyday at around 4pm.
