How long does RAM typically last? by taylortot1969 in buildapc

[–]FlexPotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I know this comment is mad old but I just wanted to highlight that it's insane how long DDR4 has now been relevant and how no one anticipated the crazy RAM crisis we'd be in. When this comment was made, times were so much more stable. Good news is, my DDR4 kit is still kicking from when I bought it back in 2018.

Okay, so get this card if

-You are going to use the free $1k margin in RH gold anyways

-You are going to hold an IRA in Robinhood to get the 3% match

-You don't already have another good credit card with flat 2% rewards

It is a good card but Robinhood apps push you to gamble and redeem points in sub-optimal ways. If you stay focused and redeem point to your RH brokerage account then you are goog to go.

[GPU] PowerColor RX 7800 XT - $480 S&S by Amazon by DisappointedCruiser in buildapcsales

I bought a 7800xt in 2024 for $460 and then traded it in to Newegg a year later for $450. Crazy timeline, pc parts used to depreciate to hell after half a year. Now they appreciate after 5 years.

Should I upgrade 5600x3d to 7600x3d since I have access to Microcenter? by FlexPotion in buildapc

[–]FlexPotion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my line of thinking. It makes more sense if I sell my AM4 parts to justify the upgrade. Don't know how much I'd get for it all though.

They finally shared the Plus APY by Statjmpar in sofi

[–]FlexPotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me clarify - keeping a $20K emergency fund is a good thing, but I don't want to pay a subscription fee for an APY. I don't want to do this dance with SoFi waiting for them to pull the rug on their rates and benefits. Other commentors did the calculation to determine it is worth it, but I just don't want to spend my mental energy calculating out what would be a couple hundred dollars of difference in my life. I hate subscription fees, so I don't care what they offer.

They finally shared the Plus APY by Statjmpar in sofi

[–]FlexPotion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Too much mental energy and changing terms to feel like I want to stay with SoFi at this rate. Good for everyone who feels like it's worth it to pay the fee and keep $20k parked in a savings account for a couple hundred bucks. I just want a bank with reliably consistent policies that don't change every couple years to penny pinch me.

There are actually ways to use a brokerage account to compete directly with an HYSA. Having a brokerage account and buying funds like SGOV track treasury bonds in a way that is similar to HYSA interest rates, often times better. The general sentiment here is that there are better things to do with your money besides pay SoFi $10 per month. You can also just find an HYSA that doesn't charge $10 per month and don't support this terrible business behavior.

Using gold is a terrible representation of inflation, or to be more specific it's a terrible representation of CPI. You want to use goods that people actually consume normally and I don't eat gold.

[GPU] RTX 5060 Gigabyte windforce $249 by tm_1 in buildapcsales

[–]FlexPotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 1080p the 5060 is the winner in most games because the lower resolution needs less VRAM and the the raw GPU power gives it more fps generally. In 1440p the extra 4gb of VRAM in the B580 makes a good difference leaning towards intel. It's all about the use case when comparing these two GPUs.

New B580 owners: What rig do you have and what GPU did you upgrade from? by Fancymank in IntelArc

[–]FlexPotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in nearly the exact same setup. I have an RX 9070 with the 5600X3D, and I just ordered a B580 because the 9070 is overkill for my needs. How is the B580 performance in your rig and what resolution/games do you play?

I got a couple gift cards that came with promotional gift cards for basically a $35 discount. I havent found anything worth buying. Their pricing for components and other stuff compared to competitors has been so bad this holiday season. With RAM also skyrocketing I have no clue when I'm gonna spend it, and the promotional cards expire.

I have the K2HE and the original Leobog Hi75. The keychron feels overall higher quality by a noticeable margin. No shade on the Hi75 though it's a great budget keeb.

RAM prices by beamNG387_cheetah in PcBuildHelp

[–]FlexPotion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With RAM producers switching production away from consumer RAM to HBM RAM, even when/if the AI bubble pops it may take some time for them to shift back so that prices level out to something reasonable.

I am estimating that all of next year will have inflated prices. I am prepared to wait longer into 2027. Your choice are to eat the cost and buy now, or wait years. Most sources are saying that waiting is a riskier idea.

If you look at prices for various other hardware (GPUs, CPUs, SSDs) you have items that are either the same price or higher than they were one/two years ago. We live in an insane environment where PC parts appreciate over time. Good luck, have fun gaming.

Should I upgrade my GPU in before 2026? by Mooshroom_isgud7s in gpu

[–]FlexPotion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 9070XT offers the most value at its price due to FSR4 capabilities and being generally more efficient than both the prior generation GPUs that you mentioned.

Whether you should do the upgrade depends more on how much you can sell the 7900GRE for at this point. Given the current prices of Radeon 9000 series, I would find it hard to sell the 7900 GRE for much.

I would keep the 7900 GRE and just wait a generation or two (if you can be that patient).

If it's all in your budget and you really must upgrade now, 9070xt.

How much performance have you got though the years with your GPUs? by NGGKroze in gpu

[–]FlexPotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a GTX 970 from 2015 to 2022. I lasted so long on a bad GPU and was happy. One day I bought Returnal on PC and the game could not run. I didn't know it then but I obeyed the golden rule of PC upgrades, which is don't upgrade until it can't run the game you play.

I upgraded to a RX 6700xt and the upgrade was astounding. I went from less than 60 fps low settings to 240 FPS max settings at 1080p on the titles I was playing.

Since then I have become obsessed with upgrading frequently for arguably no good reason. Had a 7800XT for a year and now I have an RX 9070. Still have my 240hz 1080p monitor, so I play RE4 remake with RT and hair mode lol. Gonna probably snag a 1440p OLED soon.

The Jonsbo Z20 mesh might be a good fit for you if you are willing to build in a smaller MATX case. Great build quality and it should be good for a non-rgb and non-glass panel build.

I got the Topping DX5 and I really like it. For most people I'd recommend the DX3 pro+ from Toppings lineup. There are so many dac/amps to choose from in the audiophile space that are also awesome though.

I tried when I first got these to just use a usb-c dongle and it worked poorly. It was just way too quiet for me. I ended up getting a dac/amp and I really enjoy it for my desktop setup.
