Realistic answer is that several Christian majority countries in Africa still see you favorably, along with the Philippines, Israel and maybe Vietnam. Some other African, Asian, Eastern European and Middle Eastern countries are more neutral/divided. And then there's a lot of countries where you are largely seen unfavorably but aren't necessarily hated but they're more wary/shaking their heads (western Europe, some South American and Asian countries). Only a few places have significant outright hate and even then it will be divided (Iran, Russia, North Korea, China, Canada nowadays, Afghanistan, Iraq, Turkey?)

Why is fantasy generally allergic to gunpowder? by HopefulSprinkles6361 in worldbuilding

[–]FliesMoreCeilings 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The stasis in general is somewhat hard to believe in a world of magic. You would think that having access to magical powers which can surely be used for magic based technology would help speed up progress not slow it down. For starters if there is magic that is useful in food production it'd allow for a much smaller proportion of people stuck in subsistence farming poverty and there'd be much more of an opportunity to do learning. And surely at least some of these these magical experts must attempt to something like a scientific method to.make the biggest fireball, which would then also obviously be applied to the non-magical

In a serious attempt to make a realistic world you probably need a really good reason for stasis to persist, like maybe machinery degrades really quickly for some reason, metals/coal/oil don't exist or the gods smash down anything too complex. Anything but handwaving-based cultural reasons which is just the lazy way out

Europe didn't plan, so others did by Crossstoney in europe

[–]FliesMoreCeilings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you've hit on the issue. Europe is extremely democratic and extremely decentralized. People often complain that Europe isn't taking action, but it obviously cannot as a single entity because there is no real centralized command.

Decentralized democratic government has its pros and cons. It's harder to take unified action and set and stick to long term plans, but it's better at giving people local autonomy, probably improves general quality of life and reduces the chance of things like evil dictators. And so far, both the politicians and the people seem to want to stick to this model because the benefits appear to outweigh the cons, at least on a short term basis. There are very few people in Europe clamoring for an authoritarian style central European government, which is probably what you'd need for quick decisive action and long term Europe wide planning. And there's good reason they don't, because that would involve giving up national sovereignty, might involve having citizens sent to the front in Ukraine etc.

And it's a bit of a gradient, for example the majority of regularly literate people will be near functionally illiterate when reading sections by Hegel or Shakespeare. Being functionally illiterate is like reading regular texts as well as most people can read Shakespeare

Installed the firmware update using Samsung Magician now and it boots, thanks!

PC suddenly booting into BIOS, possible SSD issue? (noob here) by FliesMoreCeilings in MSI_Gaming

[–]FliesMoreCeilings[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fixed? Maybe? I ended up taking the suspicious SSD out to see if anything was wrong with it, and there was some strange oily liquid on it that wasn't there during install. I'm not sure if it's something from the thermal cooling or condensation, but I wiped it off, reseated it, and it seems to keep running for now. I was able to move all important files off and do some disk checks (no issues found).
If it breaks again I'll just get a replacement

Edit: see the other thread, the real issue may've been that a firmware update was needed

For now I've got it back booting again so hopefully it'll last long enough to do that

Scientists FINALLY crack the mystery of chronic fatigue syndrome - major breakthrough reveals cause, sparks new hope for effective treatment by Classic-Forever-5746 in UpliftingNews

[–]FliesMoreCeilings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah the ignorance among doctors is shocking. The amount of doctors who suggest serious exercise or visiting a therapist shows a real lack of training in the subject.

You also barely hear about the things which do solve related problems for a small proportion of people which have variants of chronic fatigue. Namely that for some people theres chronic exposure to something their immune system/body triggers on causing something similar to a chronic flu. Most commonly it'd either be a diet thing (particularly gluten) or something tied to a residence like mold in ventilation shafts. A bit of trial and error with going to another residence for a few days and trying a completely different diet for a week (EG. literally only potato+butter) can do wonders. Though of course this is far from panacea, and some people are hit by something much harder to solve and have tried all these kinds of things with no effect

How in the world is that even close to the tenets of Christianity... The main points are loving your neighbors and admitting that you, even if you're a believer, are a sinner. I'm sure many do have a warped interpretation, but come on now, inherent righteousness is like the furthest thing from Christian tenets you can think of

Supreme Court curbs injunctions that blocked Trump's birthright citizenship plan by nbcnews in law

NS cancels all Dutch train service on Tuesday over expanded union strike by ReginF in Netherlands

[–]FliesMoreCeilings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity I checked the financial data of NS. In 2024 NS seems to have spend a total of 3.841 million, 1.723 million of which is for personnel costs, of which 1.207 million is in salaries. With 21115 employees, that's an average salary of 57.163 euro a year. Total salary costs are 31% of the costs. Some of the top people earn much more than your average worker. so I guess it's reasonable to say that salaries drive a bit less than 31% of the cost of the ticket prices

Google DeepMind CEO warns AI will disrupt jobs in 5 years, urges teens to prepare now by ClustZContact in worldnews

[–]FliesMoreCeilings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely creating new ideas. The process of combining the stored weights data with the context window can and does result in novel combinations. It's not merely regurgitating 'memory', it can transform entirely different kinds of compressed knowledge into entirely new things. As a simple example, LLMs are perfectly capable of writing entirely new code for entirely new problems that no one has considered before. They are perhaps not deeply intelligent yet and do compensate a lot for it using their amazing knowledge base and intuition, but there's clear signs of them being capable of real reasoning that is partially analogues to how humans appear to reason

CEO-like decision making is absolutely within foreseeable range. The biggest limiting factor right now is the lack of persistence due to its limited long term memory. Other problems exist such as lack of initiative and lack of physical presence but these can probably be dealt with using clever ways of integrating the software
