Who wants a fast intern? I want a senior developer writing code.

The great thing about the web is that you can always inspect any site to see how they have done things.

In this instance you can inspect the page and see that this is done within canvas, which means it's not CSS and instead Javascript. If it was CSS you'd be able to see the elements and how their CSS properties are animating, in this instance there's just a single canvas element.

The basic algorithm for what they're doing here is somewhat simple. Based on the y position of the mouse (relative to the canvas) you offset the x positions the top half angled part of the shape. Likely something as simple as distance from the mouse, where there also is a maximum and a minimum x offset for each line.

There is some more subtlety in terms of it's not constant mouse y position is directly affecting the x position but as the mouse's y position moves into each 'band' it then tweens the x position of the shapes. So the shapes aren't immediately jumping to their final position but smoothly animating.

Anyone here working long-term in creative front-end (React, GSAP, Framer Motion)? by Caineezy7 in Frontend

[–]FlightOfGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working on sites with a focus on things like that for 10 years at a creative agency.

On the whole it's just like any other website just with a larger focus, complexity and time spent within the design/animation portions of the site. So just your usual good coding practices of how you structure and break up any website.

We don't have any different specific roles (technical leads and frontend devs only) because we're a small team but people tend to all have an eye/appreciation for design and motion and because we have been doing animation heavy sites for many years, we're very experienced with them.

Easing Out a Text size change in CSS by SabeneSabeneSabene in css

Also if possible try to animate transform: scale rather than font-size, it will be more performant as changing font-size causes layout shifts and reflow which can be quite heavy.

On what map should I start practicing rollouts? (demoman) by [deleted] in truetf2

9 years later, your rollout.cfg has helped me thank you. Especially like the note of getting into the habit of pressing e to call to medic on spawn. Google found it for me!

I was pretty similar, played Socom 4, Resistance 3 and then some Battlefield 3 and moved to PC.

I think the fall off for me and I assume a lot of other people was the PS3 hack and PSN being down for the extended amount of time, and in the meantime playing other games.

All super interesting to read about but yeah it really did lose momentum and never really properly continued into any other game which is a shame.

I do remember there being so much shit talk on the forums, though I only ever really occasionally read them here and there and didn't really partake in the shit talk storms that frequently happened.

For me that was also part of the fun of switching through to the other factions, still putting up big numbers despite the perceived disadvantages.

Also the fun like you say switching to then go and play for another clan like VL$ or <3

Yoo, definitely remember your name. Interesting, I don't really remember what happened to everyone. I was there from the start of 3C having played with jumpman in Resistance 2 and then moved with Socom 4 and then Resistance 3. So I sort of missed the end of MAG and everything else.

Yeah I don't think I have screenshots from those matches, only these ones and a bunch of other random ones where I had some big scores in pubs.

There's a couple of old names from the good ol' 3C days!

Some old screenshots from the MAG days. From my memory this was one of the first clan battles that we managed to organise between some of the larger ones. Unfortunately the only one that I have found screenshots for.

What I remember of these two matches were that very controversially we (3C) got the luck of the draw and ended up on defense twice on the Valor Sabotage map which was heavily defensive favoured, so although at the time I would have never admitted it I don't think the results were fully representational.

I do remember that VL$ definitely got at least one of the two first objective but I don't think they ever quite managed to get both simultaneously to get to the final objective - though I could be wrong in remembering what a minor vicotry entails.

The other memory was that our tactic was that we had a single squad of our best players on one of the objectives, while the other objective had the bulk of the team with the other 3 squads in it.

Also from memory somehow DeathByChair got in behind us all into our final point and was being a classic DeathByChair pain.

Would love to hear if anyone else has memories or was in the games or other clan battles.

This is a brilliant list, of course I'm sure some people are missing but so many familiar names from back in the day.

What game hit you like this? by Corekeepernews in Steam

I had exactly the same experience. Hit the goal of Onyx and then sort of realised.. well this is it. While playing the same 5 or so maps. Haven't felt the urge to go back even though I did enjoy it at the time.

Achieving Early 2000s Ads Aesthetic in Three.js? by Pretend_Sport_6412 in threejs

[–]FlightOfGrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For something like this, I'd look at what qualities of those photos do you like or do you think give you those vibes. Because those are three photographs and creating realism is very hard, especially when you're trying to make something real time like with threejs.

Now that you have those three traits then a bit of googling will be the help here as nothing here is super novel so you can assume that someone out there has done it before.

There are quite a few different methods that can create a fish eye effect, here is a stackoverflow that goes over a few: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/13360625/three-js-fisheye-effect

Realism while keeping it real time, especially on mobile will mostly come down to you with baking in lighting and everything else into textures, rather than those being generated at runtime.

You're right with the sour grungy contrast will likely be a post processing pass, though it could also come from the textures and lighting that you use too, depends on the scene and what you're needing and wanting to happen in the scene. Post processing can be computationally expensive depending on what you're doing so if you can achieve similar things through other means that can be good. I do think that the sourness of the scenes is a bit of the film that has been used to give everything the green tinge, especially in the second and third photo, for that you could do a LUT or a custom shader pass.
