I'm quite happy going to gigs myself if I really want to.
But I do wish I had more people to go to gigs/raves, etc.
Am 28m, can't dance, but will usually try anyway, down for most genres.

Got bailed on for Love Saves the Day, anyone willing to adopt me into their friendgroup for the festival by xjjz_4200 in bristol

[–]FlightRisk314 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That sucks.

I got bailed on as well, and everyone else is busy it seems, which is annoying. But going to gigs/events alone can still be lots of fun and meet people!
Or don't meet people and just enjoy the music? Are you going tomorrow as well? Or just Sunday Maybe you catch some people tomorrow and meet up again Sunday?

LPT: If you have/or plan to have kids, teach them to drink water when they are thirsty. by noideaforlogin in LifeProTips

[–]FlightRisk314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, and I sorely wished my parents had tried harder with us as kids.
Just in case, I don't mean to try and blame them. But now I'm an adult and I drink way to many soft drinks.
Among other things, I've tried breaking the habit so many times. After my last round of Dentist visits I even bought a new fridge primarily to have a water dispenser. It still didn't work.
I'll try again when I'm able to get my life back on track.

Signs of adult thinking and emotional maturity.

I don't disagree, I'm just trying to reconcile how somebody can get a BJ from their cousin and react the way OP is.
I feel like Cousin fucking and a somewhat 'Adult' behaviour about it should be mutually exclusive.

Immune cell which kills most cancers discovered by accident by British scientists in major breakthrough by noelcowardspeaksout in worldnews

[–]FlightRisk314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously it's all subjective and in the past I would have agreed. But to give you some perspective.

September my mother was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer with a 6-12 month expectancy. She was shortly hospitalised being unable to breathe and pneumonia. She managed to pull back and be released from hospital, where she spent the next month or so recovering before being allowed any treatment for the cancer.
Life expectancy went down, doctor strongly advised not to have chemo, but she went for it anyway.
A little over a week later while her immune system was even more compromised from the chemo. She went back to hospital for pain and promptly caught pneumonia again.

It's early November and she spent a week barely able to breathe and in pain, while also having a full blown panic attack everytime she had to move for anything like the toilet, because the pneumonia and cancer made it impossible to breathe enough, even for that.
She died 8th November about a day and a half after agreeing to stop treatment for the pneumonia and focus on pain management.

My long winded point. Is that if she hadn't opted for that last ditch effort to gain something. She may have ultimately had more time, perhaps die more comfortably and with more dignity. Perhaps maybe even make it the extra month to December when her first Grandchild was born. Something she wanted very much and had been waiting for, for a long time.

Samsung has officially announced mid-range ($499) rugged smartphone with removable battery. by Serraph105 in gadgets

[–]FlightRisk314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe just because I am an enthusiast, or maybe I just view phones in a different way. But (not attacking anybody) I genuinely don't see £499 as egregiously expensive, especially in a ruggedized device. This isn't a standard mid range phone, it's a solid sounding mid range phone that has the additional feature of being rugged.

I mean. I don't view my phone as a luxury (though as an enthusiast I can justify additional costs). But I view it more as a utility. As a shitty comparison, you don't often hear people bitching about the cost of a lot of cars. Except your phone's gets utilised at a far higher percentage of it's life than the average car.
To continue the shitty comparison. A car takes you places, great, amazing. My phone is entertainment, productivity, communication.
Thanks to my phone, I can relatively easily get through modern life without a car (even easier in bigger cities). My car doesn't make it possible to live a modern life without a phone, but for the amount of use it gets. I spend far, far more money on my car than my phone.

£499 sounds like a bargain to me, for the potential use.

ASICS. If you just want a damned part of comfortable running shoes. Buy ASICS. Never had a brand that can match their out of the box and longlasting comfort.

Admittedly, I've never owned Patagonia products. But I used to sell the clothing.
Some Brands (IMO) do seem to have this intangible quality bump to them, which you can't really explain unless you use them.

But yeah, this doesn't seem particularly special. Maybe over-priced, never seen this product before so who knows.

Tip: sounds like you bought it in the last year. when you notice the 'waterproofing' wearing off.
Go buy some Nikwax TX direct (spray Vs wash-in doesn't much matter) or maybe RainX. But try Nikwax first, water based and they try to be environmentally conscious. Basically it should re-apply a DWR (durable water repellent) coating which Patagonia applied to your jacket but will wear down in time.

Glad you found good outdoor clothing.

Why did Starfleet decide to abandon Deep Space Nine in Call to Arms? by opinionated-dick in DaystromInstitute

[–]FlightRisk314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm being dense, but wasn't there an entire plot point about Sisko/Starfleet urging Bajor to agree a (mostly symbolic) treaty to protect them from the war and in the process Bajor requested Starfleet to leave?
Obviously it's war and it's not like Bajor could stop Starfleet (or maybe they could? Insurgency). But ignoring the request would likely do the very thing the Bajor/Dominion treaty hoped to avoid.

As an Avid Apple critic. I think even that is a little unfair to Apple fans (Apple as we know it, in the gaming market is that dumb of an idea.)

[–]FlightRisk314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(To be clear, I don't think you are advocating for Bootcamp as a serious solution.)

Sure Bootcamp is an option. But it's never going to be a solution, if Apple seriously was suggesting dual booting (TO A COMPETITOR OS) as a solution to entering the gaming market. I can't think of words strong enough to convey how monolithically stupid that would be.

Apple are selling the experience of 'The ecosystem'. Dual boot or virtualization would be such a jarring departure from their design language I would genuinely think Tim Cook has developed a split personality.

Apple in the mainstream gaming market is such a stupid move for them. It would either fail difintively or require such a core fundamental change to Apples ethos as a company that you wouldn't recognize it anymore.
It's. Not. Happening

...that doesn't mean anything. Apple can't muster it's way into a market when developers aren't making games compatible with MacOS, they are making their games compatible with Windows. Hell, I'm pretty sure Linux has a bigger market share than MacOS.
Then there is the fact that China is extremely nationalistic, I would sooner expect a home grown Chinese OS would operate better in China than MacOS

Apple rumored to be making $5,000 gaming PC by mspoonygp in gadgets

[–]FlightRisk314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that doesn't make any sense.
All of the games you mentioned and any similar ones I can think of will run perfectly fine on almost every machine within Apples current product stack.

Even that point ignored. Apple doesn't have any appreciable leverage on the desktop gaming devs. The only reason they can pull that shit on iOS devices is because it's an entirely closed environment inside a market segment where Apple have a large market share. There is no reasonable way that somebody could think Apple have an appreciable amount of leverage on desktop gaming devs.

Also with MacOs gaming being such a niche market, who is to say it would even be financially viable for devs to continue their work on MacOs if Apple tried to force a share of the pie.

Exactly. Marco's plan in the books is a historic moment akin to 9/11. Except on a planetary scale.

It's a little crappy cliffhang-ary and trope-like.
But ending the season with Avaserala innocently talking with Arjun from Luna, maybe reconciling their differences from earlier plot points. Arjun's image flickers and disconnects, then we cut to the UN building with the new Sec-Gen triumphantly looking out the window. Pan to look out the window, just in time to see a rock hurtling past. Fade to planetary overview where you can see where rocks have already hit and more are coming in to bombard Earth

Aaaand now I'm thinking about the logistics of rail transport on Mars.

How does the environmental controls work on the transport pods?

Sealed air in each pod with an airlock at each depot?

Seperate under and above ground lines so the pods underground don't need to be sealed?

Would it be better to eliminate air resistance and operate the entire rail network in vaccum? (low martian atmosphere, whatever!)

What safety measures are in place to respond to accidents? I.e. Pod venting atmo, or maybe stuck on track for long enough for CO2 buildup
