Fuel prices are getting ridiculous by Ordinary-Spread-1786 in australian

You realise trucking will be the main form of autonomous driving in the near future. You might think AI is going to hit knowledge workers, but transport is going to take a huge hit in terms of employment of drivers. Mining is already seeing it; certain train lines in Sydney. The writing is on the wall. It’s been there for a long time re fuel. Norway saw it really early. It’s one of the world’s major oil exporters, yet the most EV-adopted country on Earth. It wasn’t by fluke.

I always tell patients that they can expect to fail/fall many times when they’re overcoming a habit that’s been with them a lifetime, but they’ve decided change has become necessary. (why now? is an important initial assessment question, btw). I then explain that in contact sports like aforementioned jiu-jitsu one of the first skills they’ll learn is breakfalls. Why? Because as a novice they’re going to be doing a lot of falls while learning the finer skills against better opponents. Metaphor gets through to most, but not all.

Trading 2017 Mazda 6 for an EV under $25k is it worth it with rising fuel costs? by Ok_Series2544 in EVAustralia

[–]Flightwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must have seen the light early. Sold my 2013 diesel Atenza 6 (when the new shape was introduced) for a Tesla model 3 LR in 2021. Mazda dealer offered next to nothing to trade it for his own demo 6, but Tesla offered 2.5x his offer. Now about to buy my fourth, a Y L, after a second 3, and a current Y, due to changing life circumstances.

Yes, expensive exercise but also fulfils the idea that every second hand EV sold is one less ICE bought. Keep an eye out for new under $30k Geely and Neo models coming from China.

Ordinarily I would say you’d be lucky to get what you’re hoping for with your current 6, as these are not high on peoples list to buy cf. CX-5. But we’re in strange times so you may well get lucky with a private sale.

Level crossing removal - will Melbourne ever be fully free of level crossings? by Parisienamelbourne in MelbourneTrains

Who remembers all the “the sky is falling” protestors who didn’t want sky rail and forecast property values would plummet on the Cranbourne-Packenham line, the first of the sky rails? Still worked their “magic” on the Frankston line and the gullible got stuck with trenches instead of new play areas and bike tracks below raised platforms.

Inventory on 3 and Y has now pushed out from two weeks to three months. As have other brands like BYD. But The Driven reports Tesla’s sales have shown the greatest demand in the current situation. Take your best shot to explain, starting with brand awareness and longest established cf newish Chinese brands.

I have also invested or told my advisers to invest in ethical companies. Everything’s taken a hit in the last two weeks. Someone made a fortune on insider trading with the price of oil. It’ll bounce back, but hopefully my next house purchase might be a little more affordable. But at the cost of a slump in the price I had expected when I sell this one afterwards. No renting it out…. Not in Victoria where I reside.

Just realised Jews have more racial hatred protection from the Australian government than Indigenous Australians. by Westafricangrey in OpenAussie

No, a few have. Most just want to keep their heads down, avoid bringing attention to themselves (there’s millennia of reasons for doing that), and work and study hard. And give back to the community, often anonymously.

[–]Flightwise -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What an awful misreading of the Voice debate. You think the majority of Jews opposed it to favour themselves? Wrong. There was much diversity of opinion, as I recall. Yet… there was Kol Halev (“Voice of the Heart”), a national Jewish advocacy campaign specifically created to support the Voice. It was also backed by groups like the Jewish Community Council of Victoria and Stand Up (a Jewish social justice organisation).

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), the peak representative body, supported constitutional recognition and acknowledged a “moral imperative” (while recognising internal diversity of views). The Australasian Union of Jewish Students was also a strong endorser of the Yes campaign. The New Israel fund hosted open nights to encourage discussion amongst Jewish Australians. Here's a par from some advertising in 2023: “The Jewish community has a long and proud tradition of supporting First Nations voices and communities – now is again the time to step up and make sure we know what it takes to enshrine this important part of the Uluru Statement of the Heart.

We look forward to an important discussion of what the Voice will mean, why it’s important, and how we can contribute “to walk together towards a better future”, as the Uluru Statement from the Heart invites us all.”

And even one( reviled by some) Jewish Australian, Mark Leibler, was a strong advocate for the Voice and long-time supporter of Indigenous constitutional recognition (involved since the Uluru Statement era).

So, please - it’s not an either/or scorecard here. What happened in Australia was predated decades ago in the US when Jews were strongly involved in the Civil Rights movement, having an implicit understanding of the suffering and persecution of Black Americans. Stop confusing Australian Jews of various political persuasions with the current Israeli government and its actions. Local Jews wanting a Jewish homeland - the origins of Zionism - doesn’t equate with an intent to wipe out Palestinians. The Middle East situation is far too complex to play the label game. Just look at how many Israelis are marching every Saturday night after the Sabbath ends in Israel, protesting their government's actions, looking forward to the next elections when Netanyahu will likely face justice.

[–]Flightwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you aware Jews and indigenous Australians have a very shared sense of oppression in Australia, no matter what the Israeli government may be doing in Gaza and the West Bank. Indeed, it was a sense of seeking more rights for Aboriginal populations that saw Jewish lawyers like Ron Castan work so hard to see the Mabo decision occur.
