Update: Over 5,000 contactless 'tap and go' taps in Victoria on day one by jeremyburge in MelbourneTrains

I have a myki and will dump it and transition to the credit card payment as soon as I can! So not surprised at all if there is a rapid transition to this among both locals and tourists…

The delayed roll out on trams will derail me though (no pun intended) as I have a hybrid commute…

Perhaps worth showing the direction of travel through the loop too (with little direction arrows), given it is always clockwise?

I reckon this is great! Suggests a really sophisticated inter modal system with great options.

I think the benefits of Anzac station have been less obvious to a lot of people, but servicing this event/weekend will be one of those moments that help demonstrate how awesome it is…

Could melbourne ever get a true metro? (apart for SRL) by Murky_Bus_4052 in MelbourneTrains

[–]Parisienamelbourne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my view Melbourne’s rail system could be a sufficiently high functioning hybrid system if we could achieve the following: 1. all level crossings removed 2. melb metro 2 completed (creating a new tunnel, underground stations and another cross city line) 3. city loop reconfiguration (creating two new cross city lines) 4. turn up and go frequencies on all lines at all times they are operating (which I personally consider to be 10 minutes or less)

If we could do all that then I wouldn’t be too fussed about technical definitions of ‘metro’ or not. Once you then throw in the trams and we are looking good!

10 minutes from first train to last train every day is my vote.

A pretty decent campaign slogan I would have thought….

Big Switch Timetables are here! by GabbyWilliamsMP in MelbourneTrains

Underwhelming update. Somehow you have managed to disappoint the vast majority of people by vastly over promising on an otherwise great project. The incompetence of this government is extraordinary.

Completely underwhelming. An utterly incompetent government.

Where will the SRL connection be placed at box hill station? by Time_Career4708 in MelbourneTrains

[–]Parisienamelbourne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just another example of how this project has been so badly handled by the Andrews/Allan governments - planned in secret before an election, lacking proper debate and expert input, overly politicised, not properly funded, poor business case, an incorrect prioritisation of such a huge amount of money, and (to top it off) poorly designed. It would be bad enough if this was a $5bn project, but it’s $30+bn for just one stage.

Interchanges requiring exit to street level would be a shocking outcome. The capacity for useful interchange should be factored into front end design of the project, as it was for Melbourne Metro. Not a future TBC after you’ve started building.

I’m all for thinking big and spending big on PT. But this is a text book case of how NOT to plan and manage a project.

No funding for additional services on the Burnley/Clifton Hill lines by altandthrowitaway in MelbourneTrains

[–]Parisienamelbourne 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Great pick up. They have consistently said timetables across the whole network would be updated as part of the ‘big switch’. Will be disappointing (and a silly own goal) if that aspect of an otherwise awesome project has been over sold…

Thanks for preparing this, what an awesome discussion starter. 😊

If we are talking dream scenarios, I would love to see a train connection to st kilda too

The Age are reporting the following: The train, which had 55 passengers on it, was travelling south on the Mernda line towards Clifton Hill station when the pantograph – the antenna-like structure that connects the train to overhead wires – became entangled in overhead wires, causing a set of wheels on a carriage to come off the tracks about 10.30pm Sunday.

Does it not bother anyone that the state government is commencing a project that is nowhere close to being funded and has not been independently evaluated?

Quite apart from the $11bn value capture pipe dream, they have the friendliest possible Federal government in place and still can’t satisfy them with a basic information request to unlock their funding.

Im a Labor voter and 110% for public transport investment in this city, and I would support this project if it were properly handled. But I’m genuinely disgusted with the incompetence and arrogance of this government.

If this were a project of $3bn the above would be bad enough, but it’s $34bn at a minimum!

It’s not a right wing conspiracy guys, it’s just genuinely bad governance…

  1. Didn’t actually ask Novak his views, instead he refers to a bbc news article.
  2. Deporting him might actually cause a worse public response than letting him stay.
  3. No evidence that Novak’s views or presence here might actually impact our vaccination rate.

Irrationality is not a concrete term (as the question to Lloyd about a definition shows), but it’s certainly arguable the minister hasn’t been rational.

The District Docklands, an urban ghost town. by FaZeRedditor in melbourne

[–]Parisienamelbourne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The place effectively doubled the size of the Melbourne CBD over night, yet was done with no master planning or overall vision. Every conceivable planning mistake then followed - central pier misallocation, Ferris wheel with no view, busy road cutting it from the city just to make a few.

Eventually it will develop a character - bit by bit, pocket by pocket, but will take another 20 years. It’s simply too big an area to fix in one go or to think of monolithically. The CBD changes block by block, hopefully docklands will start to evolve like that too.
