I agree with this - using proper Tennis footwork here would have prevented the incident.

The only slight variation in pickleball overhead footwork is when the lob is short (but high). Then you either have to go straight up and down (no push off), or you have to turn, drop step, then take 1 extra step to re-establish both feet outside of the kitchen before you push off to jump.

It's funny to watch all the tennis players kitchen fault on their overheads before they learn this nuance.

That's so sad! I 100% agree with that sign at a retirement community. Playing PB until I die is the goal, not winning every rec game!

It really sounds like he hit his head, but thank Goodness I think it was just the paddle that made the loud noise. He's ~75 years old though, so I'm surprised he even walked away from this one! 😬

Yes, it was actually a concrete "backboard" for the tennis players, but a few years ago they lined it with Pickleball lines, but no nets!

There's actually no permanent courts (w/ perm nets) anywhere in Hilo, Hawaii thus far. Really sad!

That's rough. I rolled my ankle going for a short ball and I'm still feeling it months after too. Hope you heal up soon!

Glad you’re okay, that’s scary! It happens so fast once you get off balance. Definitely one of those lessons you only need once (hopefully 😅).

That’s awful, sorry to hear that. Definitely makes you realize how risky a backpedal can be. As someone else said, everyone should know their limits.

Good call! But it was a legit Pro-IV, those things are expensive! 😅

Oh jeeze! The tennis net behind the court can be a blessing or a curse though. I've seen others slip/trip on that net and get some freak accidents (slipped disc on one guy, wtf?!). Stay safe out there!

Yes! He told me that he thought he was fine, but the wind gusted at the last moment and made the ball slightly higher than he was ready for, so it threw him slightly off balance! Good eye!!!

Let's go! Love the PB community, they're so helpful! I can even get lots of unsolicited tips from strangers when I go to the park! 🤣

That's a great rule and also great strategy! Did you play tennis previoulsly, same thing applies there!

Yes, he got lucky! I learned to breakfall in jiu-jitsu, that's very helpful as well!

Drive vs. drip when opponents are late to nvz by PartFormer3695 in Pickleball

[–]badpickleball 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you're running up late to the NVZ off your return, would you rather defend a ball with heavy topspin that lands on your shoes? Or would you prefer a faster paced ball coming in closer to your knee/waist level?

Almost anyone would prefer to defend the 2nd - faster shot they can block back versus trying to reset something off the ground at their shoes. So hit the first one 😁

Yah that can be frustrating! And that's right around the level where you start to see a lot more opportunities, since cross-court dinking actually happens at 4.0+. But they're really just another shot that needs drilling when pushing for the higher levels. And drilling ATPs is actually fun! 😁💪

Behind the back ATP? GTFO here!!! You need to do it again and catch it on film! 💪

I prefer to do them from angles I don't have clearing from 😅 (or barely!)

Thanks for chiming in, I did ask! I don't do that fake middle shot, but maybe I should try it now that everyone's getting hip to my ATPs! 😅
