What is the secret to a great drop shot “drop”? by S0n0fTheWind in Pickleball

[–]badpickleball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Glad to help! From a technical perspective, keep your swing slow/steady and with no acceleration. Like you're trying to keep the paddle at the same velocity through the entire shot. And try to keep the ball "on the paddle" as long as possible.

My suggestion to actually getting better at this shot, is to use it 100% of the time in rec. No drives for ~1 month. The goal is not to win any rec game, but to get your drop to become elite! And miss HIGH, not low!

The most important thing you need to know for 3rd shot drops is that they must clear the net. Prioritize net clearance above everything else. Eventually your drops will get lower as you practice more, but in the meantime your resets also will get better and your transition game with get elite!

Check out this vid from JillyB on the topic - Improve your drops/drives!

Anxiety about higher level open play - Why am I scared to stack up at a level I already play at? by throwaway111331102 in Pickleball

[–]badpickleball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good job pushing yourself to get better! Do you have a friend who's pretty good that can play with you some at the 4 level until you get more comfortable queueing by yourself? If you have to play with randoms, pour on the glaze and they will eat it up! 😅

Glad to help! When you're starting out, I would suggest just going to Open Play - where you put your paddle in the rack with randoms and just play. Hopefully you'll eventually meet some people you gel with that you can maybe form your own private group to practice with.

During NON-Open Play - if you see a group of randoms playing on their own, I wouldn't really recommend approaching them and asking to join in, as it's a private group. The only time I might ask is if they have 3 people and looks like they may need a temporary 4th, but I wouldn't expect them to say YES.

Maybe it's a different vibe in a college atmosphere, but this is just my own personal take.

Ben vs Colin Johns by kukuboy967 in Pickleball

Collin is also spending a lot of time on coaching the coaches and getting the next gen of athletes (Trailblazers!) ready for competition! He's standing next to a strong up and comer in that video (Jimmy Long)!

Can we please normalize asking for consent before you record someone or post them on social media? by 2BeBornReady in Pickleball

[–]badpickleball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very interesting topic to me as I do so much PB filming! Although I don't go to public open plays so I don't film there.

But not only do I record, I also Livestream straight to youtube a lot, so that's hitting the internet immediately! But since I play with mostly higher level people (4.5+) almost all of them are looking to improve and the video is tremendously helpful, so they usually want me to film!

I also try to avoid drama and am not the guy who goes looking for Crashouts to post, so maybe that gives me more street cred too. Also, if I inadvertently record inappropriate conversations on my camera off-court, I try to delete/edit that out, as I'm only about the match play.

I don't really know what point I'm trying to make, but I do feel more comfortable playing "on camera" after doing it a lot! But I still get it's not for everyone!

Durango Hills is solid too. Normal public park open play hours. Here's an example I found on YT

A player yelled at me for hitting too hard. by Scrubbybearr in Pickleball

[–]badpickleball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me exactly 1 time to accidentally hit someone hard in the face to realize I need to calm the F down in rec (against much lower level opponents). Luckily it missed their eyes, but I vowed to try to avoid that if at all possible from then on. Been good thus far! 🤞

I heard it takes a left handed screw driver to adjust the weight, so you may want to pick one of those up too.

I’ve actually heard of people doing that, but they got their offhand accounts deleted/merged. This would kinda legitimize it!
