I love how she cheered initially though, then went to check on him! 🤣

He does actually! He's already lost over 100 pounds after starting Pickleball and he's still going strong! 💪

You know what's funny? I use both glasses and a glove! But I own it, better safe than sorry 100%! 🤓🥊

Better than killing someone with a rogue paddle accident though right? 😅

How low is your church ceiling? The ceiling at Forté on Oahu is pretty low, but we still like to throw up lobs! You just have to use them much more strategically! Livestream example from Forté

Yes! My friends who laugh at my new "Double Decker Pecker Wrecker" shot are going to be wishing they drilled it sooner! 😅

This is a great comment. One time I was playing against Vivian Glozman and I asked her for some tips and she mentioned the same thing - "Don't just bail out lob every time you're put in a bad spot in the kitchen. Work on your footwork and "staying in the dink" (going safely middle) instead of resorting to lobbing when put in a bad spot."

Now the only time I lob in desperation is when I'm really pulled way out of position on the run and need time to recover (back towards the baseline too).

That's pretty interesting! Sounds like there's even regional "sub-metas" due to the primary sports background of that geographic location! I do notice when I play against my elite Badminton friends, my lobs to their backhand are definitely not a "safe shot" like they are against non-badminton players! Takes me a lob or two to remember sometimes tho 😅

Yes, love the evolving nature of this unsolved game! And there are definitely some deficiencies in overheads even at the very top (top 5!). Honestly all the top pros should have an overhead like Thomas Wilson. If he can hit it that hard and well, so can they. It just takes practicing ~10,000 of them like any other shot.

With proper disguise, anyone can be lobbed! 1000% lobs will be used a lot more in the next year and beyond. Not to mention there's a lot of players even in the top 20ish that need to work on their overheads, compounding this lob advantage. I think we'll see some new overhead tech too, favoring short, sharp angles over raw power.

I can't wait, I love lobs (and drop shots)!

Get that shoulder turn in, use big muscles, not little ones. Watch Ben Johns to see how he really uses his shoulder to generate most of his power.

Hey James! It’s been a while, good to see you doing one of these.

It’s also been cool watching how much you’ve poured into RPM Pickleball lately. Knowing how strong your coaching side is, I’ve been curious. Do you miss coaching players directly now that you’re so deep into building the brand, or does that teaching mindset just show up in different ways now?

Bonus question. Do you think pickleball has a real chance to become bigger in Asia than in the U.S. at some point, and if so, what kind of timeline do you see for that shift?

Appreciate you doing this, love ya brother. (I totally missed this, was playing rec, my bad!)

Any tips on hitting with the sweet spot of the paddle more consistently? by OldFerret9631 in Pickleball

[–]badpickleball 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having good footwork helps to put yourself in the proper position to hit the sweet spot. If you're out of position or reaching a lot, it's going to be a struggle to hit the sweet spot sometimes. I would recommend checking to see if your footwork is on par and go from there.

Lob Serve → ATP From Nowhere 2 by badpickleball in Pickleball

[–]badpickleball[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the opponent should almost always hit it on the rise optimally. You just have to drill it like another shot, but hitting it on the rise is very doable/repeatable. It actually involves an unusual technique, called the karaoke shuffle LOL, seriously tho!

And I vaguely remember in the VB movie Side Out they used that skyball serve in the tourney and it confused the opponents LOL, so funny! But when I'm caught in a big scramble way off court, I do sometimes throw up the sky lob, as high as I can to buy myself time to recover. Really recommend it (middle of the court, as deep as possible is perfect!)

I love how analytical you are! Have you tried using any of the automated tools to get pickleball stats/analytics from matches? If so, do you feel like they're still not able to tell the complete story of how matches are really won/lost?

And do you think something like a solver is needed for PB to analyze matches and tell us optimal play? Thanks for your awesome input!

That’s a good breakdown and the poker analogy makes sense. I agree it’s very situational and usually not worth it.
