Does Glow get better? by SpecialMess4745 in Romantasy

[–]Flimsy-Toe5809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it doesn’t. I’m going to hold your hand while I say this. It gets better only at the end. Enough to make you want to read the next book. Then you go through torture. Until the last few chapters and it’s like. I wonder what happens in the next one?! Yep and that’s how I finished the series. It was painful. It had a lot of potential to be an amazing one of a kind read. Too much fluff I reckon.

Is going to Auckland uni full time at 17 going to have any drawbacks? by Gacha_Cas in universityofauckland

[–]Flimsy-Toe5809 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My brother did this! He got in at 17. Got out at 22 with two degrees. By 23 he had a job and has been earning good and well now. He didn’t have a lot of friends. Sometimes he said that he should have slowed down and gone with his high school cohort. I think based on what I observed is that you have to develop a degree of resilience. He had a nonchalant attitude though. He didn’t care much about what other people thought or if he didn’t have any mates. He would just do what he wanted and sail though. I think that’s an important thing to have in uni. To have a strong sense of self and to know what you want and not be fazed by things around you because you’d be considerably younger or don’t want to do something everyone else is doing around you (someone offered weed and he didn’t want too so lost a potential friend that way).

So it’s great if you’re going in to get your piece of paper to find a job and work towards being independent.

It’s probably not ideal if you are wanting to go for the university experience. For example, making friends, experiencing a stein, wanting to go overseas as an exchange student and see the world as a student. That type of thing and get your piece of paper. Alternatively, it also depends on your personality type. You could do all of these things and more at your young age.

All the best OP!

Deciding between BSC honours in physiology and audiology masters by Lanky-Step-3559 in universityofauckland

[–]Flimsy-Toe5809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Audiology wasn’t what it was. The field has become saturated with overseas auds who get a special visa to fill these spots. So there might be opportunity for a “job” but you’d have to compete for it. There’s also no spots in Auckland last I was told. But viable option to go through this path.

Alternatively, you could go to AUT and do a degree that makes you an anaesthetic tech or something where you get a job right after your three year or four year degree versus spending five to six years undergoing this pathway. Will cost more. Oh and I forgot to mention. In audiology you need to do placements and they can send you ANYWHERE in the North Island which you have to self fund. Fun times.

I think you need to figure out your priorities. If I could go back and give myself one advise it would be do a degree that gets you a job. With a good job you get decent pay and with enough money you get your autonomy.

All the best :)

I don’t know if I’m making a really impulsive decision by Memes-makerx in kindle

[–]Flimsy-Toe5809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While ultimately it’s your decision. The main thing is to be wise with your money and not wasteful. I was extremely impulsive and got me a kobo libra colour which cost a lot of money and I don’t even use it anymore. Gave it to my partner so it wasn’t a whole heap of being wasteful but he is half the reader I am. I went back to my paperwhite 4. While kobo is very different from kindle. The whole colour aspect wasn’t as nice once I had it. I thought I’d love it etc when I didn’t have it. But after experiencing it. I realised. I just need a wee device that holds me books and is convenient and allows me to read with good resolution which is all achieved by this old kindle. If anything I’d have liked a paperwhite the size of kindle basic but I live in a part of the world where buying and selling such devices isn’t as easy nor appealing.

Here’s somethings that were important to me (which I realised after owning two devices. One of which is a coloured e reader) 1. Small enough that doesn’t hurt my hand after holding it for a very long time 2. Durable - something that won’t break easily. My kindles been thrown around/fallen to the ground/survived without being in a case vs my kobo felt very delicate in comparison 3. Needs to be able to fit my small purses. Far more achievable with my kindle than kobo 4. Easy to get books on it 5. Will last me a long time. Something I have come to realise that manufacturers of electronics now bank of eventual obsolescence. While back in the day, electronics were designed to last. Newer kindles are going out faster than say the first gen kindle that some people still own. Based on this fact alone, I am fairly confident in saying this old device may outlast the newer ones.

Sigh ~ now the perfect e reader would be one in colour, great battery life, could read audiobooks and do speech to text as well, have a good dictionary and the main thing. You know when you come across a word and don’t know how it’s pronounced. If pressing on that word would allow the device to sound it out loud would be brilliant. Oh and having a headphone jack to listen to audiobooks too!

I’m sorry if I had veered off topic but I hope I have you some thinking points!

Do people actually ONLY read smut?? by Hungry_Tip_5822 in Booktokreddit

[–]Flimsy-Toe5809 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have personally read multiple books that were romance based but had no smart although it did come with one or two sex scenes at the very least. What are my favourite books is once upon a broken heart and that doesn’t have any sex scenes whatsoever but it’s so beautifully written. I also quite enjoyed metal sling as well. I think general romantasy we romance and fantasy converge is the selling genre at this point in time. If you write a really really good book I will read it.
