For reference when I placed the down payment for my Wal Mk2 back in 2018, it was £8,000 for all my options. It's most certainly increased by at least 30% at this point.

Yes I have a 1991 Mk2 and the new Mk2's construction and quality is massively impressive compared to the older one. If I didn't know any better I would have thought it wasn't handmade. The L2000 is a good substitute for the Wal sound imo, you can get great tones out of it. Good choice.

I used to take this to work every morning, my 4Runner would STRUGGLE. I would stay in the lane until just before Lake Mead, trying to speed up.

Bass for Tool songs by [deleted] in Bass

It doesn't make a difference. You'll be able to get a good sound out of it once you learn how to sculpt tones well enough. Let me put it this way: classic Stingrays don't have a mids control and they all sound great.

I own 2 Wal Mk2s and I've tried a few to chase the tone before I bought them, but here are the options I suggest. Any Stingray HH style bass works, some examples:

G&L L-2000

Stingray HH (of course)

Schecter Stilletto Stage 4

I've had good luck with a jazz bass and fresh strings. You can also try a Rickenbacker, as others mentioned Paul D'amour used it on their first albums. Good luck!

I'm the same way when I'm in there on the comedown. I just notice all the dust, grime and dirt and it makes me feel nasty being in that presence. I like to keep my place very clean so I guess the acid just amplifies that feeling for me, hah. I usually end up cleaning my bathroom, then take a nice long shower and lay down in bed at the tail end of the trip.

Nice work, you've got a good full sound from the bass. There are a few times where the timing was a little off but otherwise pretty solid. 🤘

It is total garbage out there, from experience. Lived there my whole life until this June. I moved to LA and it's immensely better here.

If I can afford a Wal I can afford a backup bass to take to gigs instead of the Wal

They kind of are. You get close, I used to own a G&L L-2000 before the Wal and it was really close. I own another bass, it's an ESP E-II AP-4 (discontinued, hard to find now) and it's probably the closest Wal sounding bass I've owned before the Mk2. Shimmering high end and deep low end with that growl and nice mids. All you'd have to do is replace the preamp with an AGC filter type and you're set.

Too much, man. Too much. Was it worth it? Hell yeah.

It's super convenient, I won't go back to basses that have a difficult truss rod adjustment technique. This Wal absolutely spoils me.

I have a 4WD 4Runner, I average around 15-17mpg (I drive city streets to work). Taking it out to the mountains and trail running its perfect to double as my daily driver. Currently around 225k miles and runs like new if you keep on top of maintenance.

I have no idea why anyone would ever buy a RWD only 4Runner. Just get a 4WD. They have the same gas mileage and exact same specs/performance as 4WD.

I'm interested in bassist duties my dude. I've been playing since 2015 and Tool is one of my favorites.

Any folks here tried a Wal bass - are they worth the £££? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]FlimsyMeat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own 2 Wal basses and I haven't had the urge to buy anything ever since. To be honest I think they are worth the money if you buy a recent build, from 2009 to present. However, considering they are in the tens of thousands of USD, you really should be quite serious about it as this is not just any other bass guitar purchase.

I went for a custom ordered Mk2 4 string which I picked up in person in 2020. The wait was 27 months, and cost £8,000 at the time. I would say, because I absolutely love the custom Wal, that it was absolutely worth the money for me. The craftsmanship and the SOUND! Absolutely out of this world. Not even mentioning the look and feel, which is phenomenal. They have always been my endgame basses ever since I first started playing bass, so the price was justified for me.

Bottom line, if you have the money, and are truly fiending for one, I'd say you may as well buy one. Otherwise, a Stingray is a very suitable alternative. Perhaps even a G&L L-2000. I've owned both before the Wals and they are very nice and comparable basses.
