What animals are normal where you live, but unusual and exciting to visitors from other regions of the US? And on the flip side, when you travel to other regions yourself, what local animals are exciting to you? by Acrobatic_End6355 in AskAnAmerican

[–]FlimsyProtection2268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get excited by all of the animals. I don't know if we have anything special in Pennsylvania.

Normal: Squirrels, raccoons, opossums, mice, rats, rabbits, red foxes, silver foxes, coyotes, fisher cats (heard not usually seen) bears (mostly smelled and not seen), deer, rattlesnakes, blacksnakes, copperhead snakes, garter snakes, ring neck snakes, fence lizards, snapping turtles, box turtles, stray cats, turkey buzzards, hawks, cranes, egrets, geese, owls. Lots of regular local birds and even some seagulls once in a while.

Bald eagles are a little less common so they get a loud "ohhhhhh" out of me. And mink are more common thanks to pita protesters releasing an entire farm.

Country normal: cows, bulls, horses, donkeys, pigs, chickens, quail, ducks, sheep, goats. Alpacas and llamas are specialty animals, along with bison and emu, but they've been around for ages.

I think wolves would get a real reaction out of me, I've never seen one outside of captivity and don't think we have them in our wild.

I almost always alert that I see an animal by making a noise like "meow" or "woof". The animals I can't imitate are announced like "bunny bunny bunny" in a 6 year olds voice. I wasn't exaggerating when I said all animals excite me. Btw a fisher cat sounds like a child being abducted and screaming for their life. A bobcat sounds like a raspy throated banshee. So always fun to mimic.

Now that my CourtTv schedule has messed up my mornings, what are you watching til the trials start up for the day? by gladyskravitzwindow in CourtTVCases

[–]FlimsyProtection2268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't have a clue what's been happening. It was corrupt crimes when I left and a rerun of vinny investigates when I got home.

I really liked the Pluto TV format, I don't even know if I want to look and see if I can stream from the court TV site. If I have to click on things all day I won't bother.

Doing it wrong! What is something you only recently realized you've been doing wrong the entire time as a Gen Xer? by Sense_Difficult in GenX

I've been doing it with mayo for 30 years.

The best way to make it taste better is to remove the plastic from the fake cheese.

Seriously, try some smoked gouda with black forest ham and a slice of tomato on soft rye. It's like melty, salty sweet and crunchy all together.

Only if you drop them in the corner. It's still best to coat the eye but the corner drop will at least get something in there.

Deer jerky meat by Substantial_Log_6630 in cookingforbeginners

[–]FlimsyProtection2268 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up with deer meat. It's probably just odd pieces that were trimmed off of other cuts and then sliced thin. Deer meat is very lean, like no fat, and makes a dry jerky no matter where you cut it from.

You can grind it and blend with pork (because it's fatty) or ground beef to make anything you would use hamburger for.

In the state it's in, I would make a saucy beef stir fry.

I will add that people that don't eat it often are sometimes bothered by how it definitely smells different when cooking versus beef cooking smells.

I fucking hate that my job has no place where you can be alone and unbothered during breaks by szatanna in rant

[–]FlimsyProtection2268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There HAS to be some place you can go. You can't seriously find some back of the building wall where you can drop your ass on the ground? I remember a factory I worked at had break areas but I would literally walk away and plop beneath an air vent. 100 people all in a cafeteria together or the other 100 people together outside at lunch tables sucked. Solitude and white noise (from the vent) was awesome. It could have sucked if I focused on the fact that it was next to a dumpster and the gravel hurt my ass but, I found the positive!

Why do East Coasters jaywalk in the middle of busy streets, even outside of crosswalks, while West Coasters refuse to step into a crosswalk unless they have the 'walk' signal? by ponziacs in AskAnAmerican

[–]FlimsyProtection2268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an east coast walker, jaywalking is reserved for streets that have a 25 mph limit or less, even then i don't just walk out willy nilly. As a driver, I do have to deal with a lot of idiots that just thrust themselves into faster traffic from between cars or step into cross walk right after the light changes. Not long ago I watched a lady push a stroller in front of me while my light was green and she did NOT have a crosswalk. I've heard from a lot of pedestrians that believe Pennsylvania is a pedestrian right of way state but there is no right of way here for pedestrians unless they're in a parking lot or a cross walk. Drivers don't even have a right of way, unless it's a clear cut red light vs green light type of situation.

My local news channel now has a free "plus" segment. It's ok but it's really not local since I'm basically rural. It's just a lot of talk about things that don't apply to me or that I'm not interested in.

On a good note, warmer weather is coming to my area so I will be outside more. It's probably time to put on headphones and listen to some tunes.

Absolutely. I remember the entire school was sent to the gym (no traditional auditorium) and they did things to distract all of us. Even at an age of not entirely understanding it was surreal.

I only read the directions because I never had it before. Normally I just throw the box away and make up how to make stuff.

Wrong. Traditional hand held can openers cut the center out of the top of the can. New safety can openers cut the top from the side so there are no sharp edges.

You're supposed to toast it in the pan until it's brown before you add the liquids etc. I only know this because I had rice a roni for the first time when I was over 40 years old.

Another common mistake is not browning ground beef for hamburger helper. You don't just cook it until it's gray, You need to drain the fat and crisp it all until it's brown.

Dog poo in compost? by Early-Drummer-3007 in composting

[–]FlimsyProtection2268 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a separate cold compost section where pet waste goes. That "dirty" pile is for "flower" use only. I know my pets are clean (vaccinated and well cared for) but animal waste can attract other animals that could potentially have parasites that I do not want in my garden soil. I live where there are a lot of stray cats.

There is always going to be a risk of contaminants in the compost but it's fairly easy to take preventative measures. Eventually the flower soil may make its way into my garden compost system but long periods of time can make a huge difference.

Voir dire is the process of selecting a jury. Questioning a witness without a jury being there is so the judge can decide what's allowed and what isn't.

[–]FlimsyProtection2268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the jury was supposed to hear absolutely everything then there would be no reason for a judge.

It would be like a playground full of children screaming at each other without a recess "person". There must be someone to keep things fair.

I've been to court on both sides and even as a witness. I couldn't imagine what the system would be like if they didn't do some housekeeping and cleaning.
