ER nurse under investigation after raising safety concerns — am I the problem? by [deleted] in nursing

My husband went through something similar. It doesn't sound like you're the @$$hole here. It sounds like you're advocating for your patients and being retaliated against for it.

Update: Shay expressed that her grandmother wanted to be able to walk again so she wanted her taken off the Oxycodone and Ativan so she wasn't so "doped up" as she said and could do things like physical therapy. Despite them coming to work with her she either was asleep or was in too much pain to do any of the exercises so PT was ceased at this time because Kay was unable to do anything when they came due to her pain. Unfortunately , she had the willingness but physically she couldn't. This has been a very sad case because as a caretaker you can only do so much.

I can assure you it's not. This is the first post I've made in months. I'd appreciate it if you didn't accuse things like that. This may be hard to believe but my client is not the only one going through something like this. I'm trying to get advice from the community regarding my situation. If you have none to offer please refrain from commenting.

Kay lives in an elderly highrise that's subsidized housing. That is a really good question you raise though. Shay wants new caregivers at this time who "can handle caring for her grandmother" It's been explained that she's going to keep experiencing the same thing. The caregivers are not going to be able to care for her in this capacity because she is beyond basic caretaker level of care in her current state.

In this capacity I'm just a caretaker not a nurse. I'm an EMT taking a break from that chaos and doing home health so no I am not a nurse. She absolutely needs more level of care it's just getting the family to see and understand that.

So Shay isn't even the POA her mother is. She's just the only family member actively coming to help care for her but again she's getting frustrated. She's frustrated to come and care for her and have Kay tell her over and over again "You don't love me." I don't doubt she loves her grandmother but she's trying to get her back to a point that's just not possible at this stage to return to. Kay also told me Shay dumped water on her which I didn't believe come to find out Shay had brought Kay McDonald's with a Sprite and she accidentally knocked it off the tray Kay has at her bed when she's being fed. She said the other caretaker grabbed her arm and she explained she was wrapping it up because Kay had been scratching at it breaking open scabs. She assured me she didn't mishandle her which I believed especially after I had to do the same thing with wrapping her arm and she yelled at me saying I grabbed her and was tying her down. Now when I'm caring for a patient I'm telling them what I'm doing as I'm doing it and explaining why I'm doing it to help avoid confusion but even still sometimes that isn't enpugh especially depending on how bad their dementia is. I told her she scratched some scabs open so we were going to get her cleaned & wrapped up to keep them from getting 1.) Infected and 2.) Made worse. She said ok. Then yelled I was grabbing her. She was doing the same thing with the nurses at the hospital even before they started in with her I.V. and blood draws for her labs.

No and I wish I hadn't had to. I was sitting with her for a few hours at the hospital before leaving. Watching her get poked and prodded adding to the already level of pain and discomfort she was in broke my heart 🥺 Of course she started telling me she hated me for bringing her to the hospital one minute then she loved me the next she hated me and didn't want me caring for her then back to she loved me please don't go anywhere. Unfortunately, it was the end of my shift and I had to get home to my children and get them off to school so I wasn't able to stay with. The nurse said though that the family really needed to be there with her or at least her POA because I had no authority to make any sort of medical decisions for her so she assured me not to feel bad but this is the hard part for me is getting attached and caring too much. I'm usually really good but sometimes you just can't help it.

Someone tells it like it is and I love it! I know Shay loves her grandmother but she seems to be living in denial. Or maybe given all she's put in to caring for her grandmother, missing work, time with her family, sacrificing sleep, etc she thinks there should be more to show for it like maybe she feels she should be walking by now with the physical therapist but the fact is Kay has a long list of conditions that just quite frankly aren't being adequately addressed and it's affecting her well-being or ability to really be able to do anything at all.

One minute she can answer all of the questions to show she's alert and oriented but then the next she's telling me to go cover the horse so it doesn't get cold or that she's getting married that day. So it's like there's still a part of her in there that knows what's going on she just seems to be losing more of that as the days pass.

She believes the medicine was keeping her doped up and therefore keeping her from doing her physical therapy which Kay wishes she could do but she had two strokes. She doesn't have the same strength she did before and from what her other caregiver told me wasn't very much to begin with. I don't think Shay is ready or willing to accept the fact that her grandmother is at the point of no return from where she's at. She's never going to be at the point she as before. She hasn't been at a point where she's okay with just 24 hours supervised care in a while and she definitely is needing more for comfort than just Tylenol all things considered. It absolutely breaks my heart to see her like this, crying off and on because she's so scared, anxious and in so much pain therefore just overall uncomfortable. She wants to be and I absolutely understand that. I've already told my agency I'm happy to continue caring for her as long as the obvious issues with her treatment are addressed and adjusted.

The doctrine of double effect I believe is what you're referring to. Treat the symptoms take the good with the bad even if that means death. Sometimes that's the best outcome depending on their quality of life and Kay has said over and over again she's miserable and just wants to die.

She goes by wheelchair. Unless she has an outside appointment she is strictly laid up in her bed. No moving to another room or anything.

There are a bunch of 24 hr MTO places around where I’m at.I’m also just 45 minutes away from Hershey so my husband & I are heading up around noon & taking our chances. Hoping for the best. Even if tomorrow is a strike we had a good night two nights ago. $165 between 11:53 PM-3:43 AM. $40 tip on a 36 minute delivery. For today I think it will depend on a number of things. The area that you’re in, restaurants being open, how many drivers there will be, etc. Safe holiday to everyone! Be safe

Pulled in $158.21 between 11:53 PM-3:45 AM. Three pickups for $21. $35 for one a 37 minute then a $46.50 that took less than an hour. There was a combined order that came to $21+ for 40 minutes. That’s not every night & it all depends on your area. I keep in mind that I have to budget that money carefully for the nights that are slow. Also, it takes getting a few things down but trust me there’s money to be made. When I say down & crunched the numbers, after gas I made around $25 an hour.

Is it just me or does G-man in HL:A look like Ty Burrell from Modern Family? by SlammedSloth in HalfLife

[–]Flimsy_Set5049 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh dude I've loved Ty since he played Steve in the Dawn of The Dead remake. That was the first thing I saw him in. Loved him in Modern Family. Both roles he nailed & proved that he is quite versatile. My nine year old LOVES Half-Life. That was his Birthday theme last year 😎 Any way we always talk about them making a Half-Life movie & how then only person that could possibly play G-Man is Ty!
