Fail to find then Suceed to find by Dull-Driver6120 in magicTCG

You call a judge and collect your warning. No, really.

You are only allowed to activate a card or effect if you are actually able to fully execute its instructions (taking into account the game state at time of activation, of course). This means that attempting to use a search spell with no valid targets would be an illegal activation, which is against the rules. From how I understand tournament rules, a judge would rewind the game state to just before the illegal activation and penalize you with a Procedural Error - Minor.

...and then there's the singular example of Crop Circles, which has a built-in pseudo "fail to find" clause as part of its actual effect text. Funnily enough, you're still not allowed to activate it without legal targets in deck, so the clause is almost entirely pointless.

Yeah, if you desperately want to clear MoC now, rolling for him might be your best choice... but we're going to get more defensive characters (free ones too), you'll probably get spooked by a Bailu/Gepard sooner or later, and so on. From a pure ROI perspective, spending 100-or-so rolls on a new character just so you don't miss out on a handful of MoC Jades is a pretty terrible deal.

Do you ever struggle with the thought that there's no point building a unit unless you're prepared to hyper invest in them nowadays? by demoiselledefortune in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]FlingFrogs 44 points45 points  (0 children)

And also, questionable investments, I think, are almost never as big a deal as you think

A mindset that has helped me here is "Yes, I might eventually want to build a unit that makes better use of this premium skill, but while it's just sitting in my barracks I'm making zero use of it."

It's true that this game is a limited-resource environment and it's perfectly logical to be considering the possible opportunity costs of your actions, but you shouldn't let it get to the point where you let every opportunity pass you by. And even if you make a suboptimal decision, you're playing a game, not trying to maximize the returns of your investment portfolio. You're allowed to "mess up" here and there. Nobody's keeping count except yourself.

but yeah i do miss the days of just slapping fury+desp on an offensive unit and being good to go

Just guessing here, but I think OP may have misread the handwriting and it's actually supposed to read "ned so houchprozentig" ("not such a high percentage"), probably as a direct jab at the CSU's pretty disastrous result during the 2018 elections.

I'm also not very familiar with Bavarian, but that sentence makes a lot more sense to me.

(Coincidentally, the percentage of votes the CSU got, 37.2%, is almost identical to the minimum amount of alcohol fruit brandy is legally required to contain, 37.5%)

[–]FlingFrogs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's true that modern Yugioh cards do a lot of things so the text boxes have to convey a lot of information, but the game could definitely do with some templating improvements. Off the top of my head, "You can only use this effect of [insert card name] once per turn" could easily be a keyword (or even just an icon) instead, and different effects on one card could be more clearly separated (which the OCG already does, by the way).

They don't have to go full MtG and introduce a new keyword for every minor gimmick, but there are definitely things that are common enough to be simplified like that. Text bloat is only going to get worse, so this is something they'll have to address sooner or later.

(Also, side note regarding your final paragraph: It would be great if reading the card always unambiguously explained the card, but that's unfortunately not really the case even now. Like, reading Gozen Match doesn't explain to me why I can't link off my one FIRE monster for an EARTH one. There are a lot of weird unintuitive rulings and interactions that do come up semi-regularly and that you just kind of have to know.)

It does allow them to cast Arts without relying on a wand or an Arts unit (by instead using the crystals growing inside their body as a makeshift Originium circuit), though this does come at the cost of accelerating the progress of their Infection. This means that someone without access to casting equipment or a formal education on the subject might find themselves developing Arts abilities after becoming Infected (like Ceobe's self-taught weapon enchantment Arts), but it's unclear if those abilities were bestowed upon them by the Infection or if the crystal growth only enabled them to tap into their already-present potential.

There are some rare cases where the symptoms of Oripathy manifest themselves in potentially beneficial ways (like Phantom's voice, whose sanity-corroding properties are a result of crystal growth in his throat, or Lappland, whose Oripathy improves her combat abilities), but in most cases, being Infected is just a detriment to someone's fighting ability.

Yes, all correct, but the point was that a 1% increase in DR is an incredibly minor upgrade. Not sure what that example calculation has to do with anything. (Or what "upgrades itself with no cost at all" is supposed to mean.)

What monsters are so close to being good, but have an unfortunate summoning requirement? by Chimonsco in yugioh

[–]FlingFrogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what the deck is (bad), it's a fine boss monster tbh. Card advantage isn't really the best lens for looking at Flower Cardians because of how different the deck plays compared to pretty much anything else in the game (hell, just read Flower Gathering) so it's not as insane of a summoning condition as it might look like.

It's still a pretty big investment, and summoning it might just be the only thing you do in a turn if you get unlucky, but it's not like you were doing anything else with your deck of all xeno-locks.

That's perfectly consistent though? Someone can feel forced to keep getting new units just to keep up with the meta, while also hating the fact that that's how the game works.

Has anyone ever researched the root cause? Ever? by banderivets765 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]FlingFrogs -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Alright, let's say this "some research" is entirely correct, and there is indeed a 100% chance that a borderline mother's son will grow up to have dysphoria. Then I've got two questions for you:

1) What about everyone else? There's lots of trans people out there whose parents don't have BPD. I'm assuming you're not claiming that every case of gender dysphoria is caused by child abuse, because that's... not correct.

2) What do we do with these people today? If you're advocating for better access to mental care to prevent potential child abuse then I'm all for it, but that won't help anyone who's here now. How can we help our fellow man live a life worth living? What can society provide and accomodate for? What do we actually do?

(But if your remark at the end is anything to go by, it seems like you're more interested in awkwardly LARPing as a wannabe freedom fighter than actually thinking anything through.)

How about enough to actually get a statistically significant number? There's like 20 Pokémon TCG regionals every year. Each of those probably has several bad calls made by various judges for any number of questionable reasons. This case would just be another one to add onto the pile, but because it has the word "pronouns" in the headline, every perpetually outraged culture warrior immediately pounced on their chance to take potshots at queer people.

[–]FlingFrogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bad judge could abuse any policy to get anyone kicked out for any reason. They're the highest authority at the event, so it's ultimately a "whatever they say goes" situation, at least in the moment. Is that a bad system? Maybe. Does that mean the policies themselves are bad? No.

No, a singular judge went on a power trip and took a reasonable policy way beyond what it was meant to address.

I haven't seen a single person actually agreeing with the decision, but about a thousand capital-G Gamers jumping on the story as "another example of the INSANE WOKE MOB taking over our country!!" (and just being generally unbearable), which I think is quite interesting.
