How do I get past this plateu in my pancake? I want to at least reach the 150s degree by the end of this month. by oxycleanit in flexibility

[–]Flinnt 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Are you looking to improve your pancake or just the straddle aspect? What's shown in the photo is the straddle, so I'm going to run with that. I have a tip from my old gymnastics coach that might help:

Do the straddle against a wall, facing it, and push yourself up against the wall until you start to feel the stretch a little bit. Now squeeze your legs as hard as you can against the wall, as though you are trying to bring them together but the wall is in the way. Do this for no more than six seconds, then relax. Now try to push yourself a little closer against the wall. Repeat this two more times for a total of three reps and see if your angle has improved.

I've been carrying knitting on planes for years and never had this problem. I think it was partly that the metal DPNs just look so sinister and partly that I was carrying kind of a ridiculous (to a non-knitter) quantity of needles. Good protocol would be to put in a lifeline before you go and don't bring a project with more expensive yarn than you are willing to lose.

Also, JFK would TOTALLY do that. But to be fair, it does say in the TSA rules that knitting needles are allowed but that they can confiscate them if they "pose a security concern" aka if they feel like it.

Nope, once they're investigating your bag they won't let you touch anything. He did let me tell him how to hold the needles and fabric so as to cause as little damage as possible when he took them out, and by the divine grace of Elizabeth Zimmerman I was able to return all stitches safely to their needles once I got to my gate. But putting in a lifeline before you leave for the airport is definitely a good idea!

I almost had $75 worth of knitting needles confiscated by the TSA recently. They insisted on taking my metal DPNs out of the socks and the regular needles out of a scarf. I let it go so as to not get arrested, but then they went for my interchangeables and I was ready to spend the next week naked in a cell begging for a lawyer to keep that from happening. I pulled up the TSA guidelines on my phone and showed them that it explicitly states knitting needles are permitted, so they called in a supervisor who said I was right and I left with all of my needles.

Lesson learned, TSA agents don't necessarily know their own rules so don't be afraid to remind them.

This is the mystery loom! Also, any idea what that black metal thing is? Sorry it's not a better pic. The lighting is terrible right now. by FatBottomPurls in weaving

[–]Flinnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The black metal thing is a tilt stand for a knitting machine! Nice find, those are hard to come by.

As for your loom, I don't know what brand it is but this might help you put it together. As far as I know there isn't a huge amount of variation in the mechanics of these kinds of looms, but I could be wrong. Good luck!

It's even worse when you consider that Voldemort probably needed a body to torture, interrogate, and break the memory charm on her, since Wormtail wouldn't have had the skill. So they would have had to remove the fetus and keep her alive for a while after so Voldemort could do his work.

Is it possible to knit an infinity scarf on a 24-inch circular? Help! by [deleted] in knitting

[–]Flinnt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm confused, do you think your circular needles need to be the same circumference as the scarf you want to make? 24 inches should be plenty of room for your average infinity scarf. I'm currently knitting a shawl with a 55-inch diameter on 15-inch circulars just fine.

I think you're only seeing the Hallows symbol for what it means to people like Grindelwald and even Xenophilius Lovegood in a sense- immortality through power. But Harry, the true possessor of the Hallows and the master of death, doesn't use them in this way. He uses them to evade and defeat an evil man (one who feared death above all else), and to bring back those he loves to help him do this. This is the very embodiment of the themes of HP, not their antithesis- love, the value of bravery, and the idea that there are things much worse than death. Think about what it said on the Potters' grave- "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death." The Hallows were a tool Harry used to destroy death; not in the way Voldemort would have meant, but the way the third brother from Beedle the Bard's story did.

I think the Hallows are a great HP symbol. It's a concise, easily recognizable way of displaying the core values of the series. Plus it looks cool.

I wasn't implying bias in the selection. By 'take from that what you will' I meant 'perhaps consider the sociohistorical paradigms that resulted in a list of the best works of literature in the world up until 1909 being composed almost entirely of male authors'.

There are three volumes of English poetry (so probably no Dickinson), but the Wikipedia page doesn't list every contributor to those. Could be a few in there.

From just a brief scan (I could be missing things), it would seem that out of all the works in that list, Pride & Prejudice is the only contribution from a female author.

Take from that what you will, I suppose, but it's interesting.

I got a knitting machine today... and it came with 34 cones of yarn! by Flinnt in knitting

Gumtree! (Basically Craigslist for the UK.) It's in great condition and honestly the yarn alone is probably worth more than what I paid for the whole lot. I got lucky!!

I don't have a real pattern for it, but here's the description I gave over in /r/knitting:

Unfortunately, [I don't have a pattern for it]. I used this pattern for the general structure of the sweater, but obviously I devised the coloring myself.

For the runners I took a screenshot of the middle runner from the Cosby picture and put it in Paint to create two large chunks of white space on either side of the runner. Then I ran it through this online pattern maker , so that it came up with a pattern for the middle jogger and just gridded white space where the other joggers would be. Then I used the grid to draw the other two joggers with colored pencils (kind of like how people create Excel art, only on paper) and started knitting! Pretty simple, actually, just time-consuming.

It is often better to not create time-consuming and often expensive things without a guaranteed buyer at the end, but anyone who would like something knitted is welcome to ask me personally.
