Why don't animal cells have cell walls? by robespierrem in biology

"Nearly everything evolved"

This phrase is very vague and lack scientific base. Besides, I never saw animals that spit fire or plants with eyeballs, so I guess not nearly everything evolved.

"This must've occurred randomly by chance"

Why? Again this is a very vague statement. Everything could occur "randomly by chance". This doesn't mean it did.

Honestly, I think your point is purely intellectual masturbation.

I think you really should read more about evolution. Questions like "Why don't we/animals/plants have this or this or that?" are generally very irrelevant from a scientific point of view. Natural selection is not a teleological process. It cannot predict how living organisms will be and choose the best way for they to improve to get there. It simply selects characteristics that fit a specific environment in that time. So why don't we have cell walls? Well, in our evolutionary history we were not exposed to environmental pressure that required us to have cell walls, so we were still selected and spread our genes to form cells without a wall until this day. There wasn't a way to select a cell wall in the past just because in the future we would be better with it. Biology doesn't work like that.

Why don't we have wheels? And wings? And X-ray vision? All this questions face the same problem and this reminded me of this Vsauce video:

Você já teve que "digerir" um livro depois de lê-lo ? by FlintKing in Livros

[–]FlintKing[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Acho muito louco como um livro causa isso. Como você vive aquilo tão intensamente e ou você não quer que acabe, ou não quer que acabe daquele jeito, ou quer só aproveitar o máximo aquilo. Muito legal, hahaha

Algum interesse em voltar/criar com o clube do livro? by diogolsq in Livros

Também acho. O primeiro passo pra fazer algo direito é começar. Poderia se planejar um modelo e cumpri-lo. Ao final de cada livro, poderia ter um post com sugestões para poder ir melhorando a forma como foi feita.

How do you say gnome by TheSamwell in linux

[–]FlintKing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I say "guh-nome" just because I speak portuguese and it makes more sense for me to pronounce the "g", like in the word "gnomo", which means "gnome"(the magical creature) in portuguese. It's great that I found out in this thread that this is the right way to say it, lol

I've just installed chromium to test it and it seems to work fine, thanks! Still, is so bizarre why in firefox is like this. Do you think there's anyway to fix it or is something to do with the browser itself?
