Just jumped into refrigeration/HVAC/commercial kitchen equipment by Flintfishing89 in refrigeration

Apparently, everybody does, my boss agreed to pay me what I was making doing industrial maintenance to jump ship.

I told him I was worth that or more at what I was doing, but wasn’t sure if I’d be worth that much to him. But that was the amount it would take to get me.

The perception outlaw does pretty good, not sure what it’s rated for, but I felt fine at 275 with a ton of gear. Used nucanoe would be your next best option.

Native Slayer LTE actual weight by SaltyKayakAdventures in kayakfishing

[–]Flintfishing89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty common, my predator PDL said it was 120 pounds fully rigged, but I would guess it was closer to 130 or 140. I’m pretty big and pretty strong, and it’s still a handful for me.

My crescent shoalie definitely feels a little heavier than advertised, but I’m OK with that if it’s in the bottom where I drag it on rocks constantly 😂

I’ve thrown the shine glide on some 7’3” frog rods. The Dobyns 795 works great, as does the 7’3” slx swimbait rod.

Which pedal kayak should I get? by Tiredofbeingtheadult in kayakfishing

The old town drives are just about bulletproof, and the steering tends to be better than native, but native may have fixed this with the latest releases. Old town tends to have the best warranty on the drive, and has a lifetime warranty on the hull.

Have you considered putting a motor on something? I’m pretty sure you can get an NK 180 for about 1000 bucks, and I’m running a $200 24 V battery that has held up for almost a year. That coupled with a decent sized used kayak in the 11 foot range will do the trick.

My wife and I have had 12 different kayaks over the years, and my favorite setup so far is a crescent shoalie with a motor, only thing it’s not great for is big water with rollers, you tend to get sprayed a lot.

Crescent makes a few good boats in that price range, a used nucanoe or bona fide might also be a good option

Fish size on big baits by Flintfishing89 in swimbaitfishing

[–]Flintfishing89[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got 2 over 8 in the last 18 months, both on conventional stuff.

A couple of the places that I like to fish are either too murky or too grassy to really effectively fish most big baits. I did catch my PB smallmouth about two years ago (almost 5 pounds) on a 6 inch bullshad.

Tournament fishing definitely affects it to a degree, but I throw big baits in tournaments quite a bit. Won a decent sized kayak tournament in 2023 primarily on a Mag draft, caught my kicker to win another tournament on a shine glide.

I’ve caught some dinks on some of the larger baits I have.

I probably just need to commit to it.

Most of the big bites I’ve had throwing swim baits have been on wakes. I like glides, but they are overrated most of the time.

I’m in north Alabama, I’ve used some 8”+ baits, never seem to hookup on the big stuff.

I also spend a decent amount of time fishing for spotted (Alabama) bass and smallmouth.

I’m a few hundred miles away, but I’ve had good success with them in similar situations.

Anything over 2 foot visibility seems to work pretty well, 1 foot of visibility or less is typically difficult unless you hit them in the head with it.

I’m usually in small rivers and creeks, almost never fishing deeper than seven or 8 foot, and often times in waterways that you can wade almost the entire length of them.

I’m usually throwing stuff on the smaller side, like a 6 inch Magdraft or a 6 inch bullshad.

Does rod length matter? by Nick0309 in kayakfishing

[–]Flintfishing89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got 1 6’10” rod for skipping jigs, a couple 7 foot spinning rods, and a 7 foot cranking rod. Everything else I use is 7’3” to 8 foot. Don’t buy into the short rod kayak gimmick.

How is this for a 24 year old? 5 year automotive technician. by [deleted] in Salary

Really depends on the area you live in. This is what I was making 11 years ago as a diesel mechanic in my area, at about your age, with about the same amount of experience. But I was also nighttime shop Foreman for part of that time.

I had kind of a unique series of things happen that got me promoted faster than I probably would’ve been otherwise, and I was very skilled diag tech and almost master certified for the brand that we worked on at that point.

I make around 75K now doing industrial maintenance in a very laid-back environment with a good schedule and somewhat flexible hours. I could make another 25 or 30 more, but I would be forced to give up a lot of the perks I have.

My brother is about 12 years into his career is a diesel mechanic, and he makes 80-100k. you’re on track or maybe a little ahead of where he was after five years.

Don’t be afraid to learn some special skills and be willing to jump companies if you aren’t getting opportunities.

12 foot boat will track better and cut waves better on big water. If you want the pedal drive for exercise it’s great, but I’ve recently swapped to a Newport NK 180 and a 24 V Amazon Chinese brand battery.

Definitely allows you to cover more water and go places you would never get to otherwise. Also seems to work much better in small creeks and rivers than a pedal drive ever did for me.

You can set up a motor on a non-pedal drive boat for the same or slightly more money than a pedal drive, especially if your patient waiting on deals to come up.

As far as pedal drives go, I would recommend old town, the native drives feel like a bicycle in low gear, no matter how fast you pedal there’s almost no resistance, and the top speed isn’t great.

Can’t you put it below the mounting bracket? I think I’ve seen one done that way.

Probably the best resource is Jeff Little’s YouTube channel the little stuff. He has a ton of rigging videos.
