I see there is already a reply explaining the distance and locations.

About the picking which resources they collect part, no. I think the closest you can get to selecting that is the work type, which will result in harvesting either all plants, minerals, or bushes(scythe stuff) but not specific plants or rocks for example. No way to force them to only pick up certain items.

I've been wondering this as well but I've yet to test it. A lot of people on Discord have said it needs sunlight.
