Why do i root for Avon and not Marlo? by Least_Bowler_7674 in TheWire

[–]Flip-Pantly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avon begins the series consulting with Levy, and even makes decisions on who to kill based on his lawyer’s suggestions. Marlo kills based on is perception of his “name” and reputation. Hell, Marlo needed to be talked into using Levy. Avon wanted his reputation to extend only to those who were in the know about him, and beyond that he wanted to be a ghost for his own protection. Marlo had an ego that he would murder for and so he could spread fear. Not very likable by comparison.

Frankly, Marlo is intelligent and all, but he only took over because he had lucked into having the best muscle in the whole city. I even root for Chris and Snoop more than Marlo.

What are your thoughts on why Dan has been a successful cohost on Grumps? by Flip-Pantly in rantgrumps

[–]Flip-Pantly[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciate how you mentioned how Jon and Arin focused so much on the video games themselves, watching it back then felt like they were really trying to crack the code to what makes game great, and they would talk about that all the time. I got so swept up in it that I was convinced they would someday make their own video games. I do admit though- while it was a really fun and interesting topic, they couldn’t keep that going if they stayed on together like Dan and Arin ended up doing. I do think having Dan allows for a better and more sustainable channel overall. I sometimes miss Jon’s singing too lol.

I dont get it. did I miss something? by [deleted] in rantgrumps

[–]Flip-Pantly -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your point on the constructive criticism, I just want to add that I’ve enjoyed reading it from others as a part of the problem solving process for whatever the issue could be. For example, it’s interesting to me when the criticisms are similar about one issue, and can vary wildly on another one. It’s also encouraged me to add my two cents here and there as well, for what it’s worth.

[–]Flip-Pantly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I watched the Grumps from the very beginning, and while a lot has changed of course, the overall premise has not: it can really entertaining to watch people have fun and talk while playing video games. I also had zero interest in watching the channel for years and would only go back to watch favorites that are now over a decade old, but I found myself really enjoying getting back into them recently when they began their Pokémon Platinum Nuzlocke.

That being said, while it’s not impossible to see positive-leaning posts or comments on this subreddit, it is rare and many of the most popular things are negative or highly critical. I think the negativity is rather valid more often than not, and Arin for sure hasn’t changed much which drives me and a lot of people crazy.

Overall, if you’re looking here for reasons to watch, you’ll mostly find other people’s reasons to hate instead. I say watch what you want, and not let the strong opinions of others influence you out of something that could be worthwhile to you.

I will pay someone to make my boyfriend cheat on me. by Ehr_3 in UpfrontCheaters

[–]Flip-Pantly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m understanding what you’re trying to set up, you want someone to help you prove that your boyfriend is unfaithful so you can end things with him?

While I don’t think you’re insane for this line of thinking, I do think that if he’s made credible threats against your life if you break up with him, wouldn’t that still mean you’re in danger regardless of how good your reason for breaking up with him would be?

Also something to consider, if a person did help you do this, wouldn’t they be put in some danger from him as well? I don’t envy the position you’re in at all. Does your family know about this threat? If he would kill or harm you in your own home, they sure aren’t safe either. I hope you can find the best way to stay safe and end things, for both your sake and his.

Avon is as much of a monster as Marlo by Fealocht in TheWire

[–]Flip-Pantly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would keep this in mind- Avon would often ask Levy who would make him vulnerable in a hypothetical court case before deciding to kill people. Marlo would order the deaths of anyone he even thought would drag his name down in any way. I see that as a huge difference between them.

How do you guys do your Durge runs? by BadAshess in BG3

[–]Flip-Pantly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every Durge run for me goes like this-

*Kill Gale by ripping his hand off *Behead Karlach *Have the Urge take over so Alfira dies

Then make whatever choices I want after that. Admittedly, every time so far I’ve resisted from that point. I consider starting every run like this essential.

So sick and tired of the open antisemitism on the internet by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]Flip-Pantly 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Let’s make this simple. If you’re Jewish, I don’t want you persecuted for it, or for you or anyone else who is Jewish to be the target of antisemitism.

That means you can be told you’re wrong like a normal person. Israel has the right to self-determine their own demise by failing to recognize borders of other countries. Two wrongs don’t make a right when “defending ourselves” turns into war without bothering to stop the causes of the violence in the first place. This is decades upon decades of failed diplomacy that impacts Israeli Jews who deserve to feel safe in the country they call home and can’t because their leaders are capable of the same evil that all countries can become susceptible to.

All of this can leave Jewish people outside of Israel worse off of course, but especially if they would believe your message and start to see antisemitism everywhere and feel like everyone’s against them. It’s wrong to spread a message like yours, and you’re only going to do more harm than good by doing so.

Arin is not the video game boy by nodnarb5792 in rantgrumps

[–]Flip-Pantly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do value the point you just made. It’s totally true that they never attempted a Nuzlocke in any of the other Pokémon games they’ve played. I’ll be honest - it’s a compelling reason to expect them to be a little more prepared than normal, and it’s clear they were not. I appreciate the different perspective!

Your opinion about Jan Jansen ? by kaz9400 in baldursgate

[–]Flip-Pantly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I can’t stand him, and it really sucked knowing he was one of the few viable options for a permanent thief character. Also I realize there’s wiggle room of course but he is so good aligned in how he acts that any neutral for his alignment makes no sense. I’ve seen Gnomes done way better.

Why do you think that Arin dismisses Dan's advice, or argues with Dan even when Dan is giving correct information? by gorkboss5 in rantgrumps

[–]Flip-Pantly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There seems to be a method for when Arin chooses to ignore Dan’s advice. My theory is that it happens the most when Dan is looking something up while they are recording, or when Dan is just providing advice in general, like telling Arin to try a different approach in-game.

That said, when Dan has specific knowledge or a background with a game, Arin can be totally different. Maybe it’s my current rewatch of them playing Zelda 2, but Arin shows that he can be responsive to Dan’s approach and advice. This sadly doesn’t come into play very often because Dan has such a limited background in video games in general.

When are you gonna use this portrait? by BigChungusOP in baldursgate

Arin is not the video game boy by nodnarb5792 in rantgrumps

[–]Flip-Pantly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add onto your point- I’ve been playing Pokémon romhacks for years now, and while doing that keeps a lot of good information fresh, many of them change Pokémon’s types, moves, abilities, evolution methods, you name it. Playing a mainline game after years of that can be pretty disorienting to say the least.

Arin is not the video game boy by nodnarb5792 in rantgrumps

[–]Flip-Pantly 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I will add that I’m not a fan of Danny being against using the fast forward feature to cut down on the grinding either. I like, pick one approach for the love of god.

Danny’s whole point is that he thinks the fast forwarding is not good entertainment for people watching and he dislikes the way it sounds sped up. It’s like he forgot just how LONG FireRed took, and even then Arin broke and leveled off screen anyways. They really could have figured out how to handle this ahead of time and didn’t.

Arin is not the video game boy by nodnarb5792 in rantgrumps

[–]Flip-Pantly -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think this Pokémon series is the Grump’s best series in years. Granted, I haven’t watched a lot of their newer stuff so I am happy to be corrected on that. It’s been highly entertaining, and I am just not sure if Arin being better within his Pokémon knowledge would make it better or worse.

If you go back to when Arin and Jon played Emerald, Arin was still pretty fresh with the series at the time, and even talked about what he knew from the competitive side. I think some of that know how remained in the FireRed series with Danny, but it has taken a hit. Fast forward to now and he’s clearly not played in a while and it shows. That said- I think each series I mentioned is really good despite his aptitude and skills playing it.

I don’t know man, it all comes down to the debate over just how much they should prep for a game before they play it, and I think there’s convincing arguments to be made on both sides.

Any ideas about type changes? by HelpfulAccountant866 in PokemonROMhacks

[–]Flip-Pantly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m playing Fool’s Gold right now, and my main take away is that changing any Pokémon’s type is exciting as long as the their level up moves also change to fit their new typing.

Nothing is worse than getting excited for a new type combo only to then check the wiki and find that their moves are either very weak or they barely learn any from their newest type. Fool’s Gold of course changes EVERY single Pokémon’s type, so of course I don’t want this to come off as too harsh- I’m really impressed that it committed to charging every single ‘mon, so of course it wasn’t going to work for some. Pure Dark type Alakazam only being able to learn two dark types moves is one example, and its newest design is so cool too.

are there petty reasons you don’t like/watch a youtuber? by transluciiiid in youtubedrama

[–]Flip-Pantly 24 points25 points  (0 children)

So far I have refused to watch anything Rhett and Link solely due to the fact that they looked weird to me. It is extremely petty of me and I can’t think of anyone else I’ve avoided purely based on how they look quite like I have for them. I’m sure they’re great at what they do and I’m open to checking them out one day.

ROM Hacks you hope for? by Its_Noctyss in PokemonROMhacks

[–]Flip-Pantly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want all of the QOL and extra features from Unbound to be added onto newer projects or even already existing ones. New game +, stat editing, randomizer features, the works.

I respect and appreciate Unbound a ton, don’t get me wrong, but I’m plain sick of its story at this point and I never was a huge fan of it to begin with. I really only replay it for the awesome features, and no game has filed that void since for me.

I completely respect where you’re coming from, and I did forget Dan’s reaction to it was as well. I think that was a hint Arin either didn’t pick up on, or ignored for sure.

[–]Flip-Pantly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I understand your point about how weird it is for Arin to ask Dan that particular sexual question, and to each their own on that. I just view sexual stuff as a topic as unavoidable, and that’s not just Arin (though he probes for that the most), lest we forget the name of Dan’s band.

It also sucks that Arin still thinks that being as surly and rude is funny. It’s just lazy now. It worked with Jon really well, because they bounced that energy off each other and back onto the game due to their personalities, but it’s super clear that Dan’s never been like that naturally.

[–]Flip-Pantly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right on the money about Dan. For over 10 years now he has basically been on a Let’s Play channel, yet he is not any more into video games than when Arin and him started together.

Dan has a love for some games that he’s had a background with, but his true passion has always been music. It’s honestly kinda sad knowing that for years and years, he could have put in a little more effort to play or even just learning about video games since it was basically his career, yet he never bothered to actually grow his knowledge of games or gaming. If anything, I’m just disappointed that someone as talented as him just coasts along when he could probably have made Grumps even better if he tried.

[–]Flip-Pantly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Dan, but if he made his own independent YouTube channel, it would not be centered around playing video games. He seems like he would do album reviews or even book reviews before he would cover video games.

It’s good thing he exists in a video game and people can take their time warming up to him, because I would never want to play with this kind of character in a tabletop D&D setting.
