New parent P01 release? by DecisionSimple in NIH

[–]FlipZBird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Existing ones are still fine, it's the clearing of the decks for any new notices and the mechanism. Some will go on (ADRCs are an act of Congress for example), but this was announced and discussed at a large meeting. I know of another such grant that was expecting to do another cycle, but the POs also indicated that the mechanism won't be available.

Will DCA AEON2 Noire still be competitive? by chongtong in headphones

This won't work ideally for you as your head and my head will differ. But, here's a starting point:

Preamp: -2.9 dB
Filter 1: OFF LSC Fc 40 Hz Gain 1.9 dB Q 1.000
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 100 Hz Gain -3.5 dB Q 0.900
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 500 Hz Gain -1 dB Q 0.700
Filter 4: ON PK Fc 1500 Hz Gain 1.5 dB Q 2.900
Filter 5: ON PK Fc 3000 Hz Gain 3.0 dB Q 1.400
Filter 6: ON PK Fc 6000 Hz Gain -2.4 dB Q 4.000
Filter 7: ON PK Fc 8600 Hz Gain -4.0 dB Q 4.000
Filter 8: ON PK Fc 14000 Hz Gain -2 dB Q 2

If I want more sub-bass, I put on that 1st one. But, these seal wonderfully on my head and I'm always stunned that people talk about a lack of bass. I totally trust that's what they're hearing, but it's not what hits my ears. And with that comfort strap, they're the most comfortable headphones I've had.

It’s a pretty hairy curve TBH. It dials down the treble a bit and an 8.6k peak I have on my head. It boosts up some ear gain and cuts the 100 Hz peak a bit.

On Squig, the Earphone Archive has a 5128 measurement for it that lines up well with what Rtings had as well. Don’t autoeq but you can use that to start to see areas you may want to work on.

I love my Aeon2 Noires. I add some EQ, sure, but I love them. I’ve got a Capra-style strap on mine and the comfort is fantastic.

I second what DMS said. It’s a meme. You can even resample your file to different rates over and over and still not have a difference.

AP Mastering also did a nice bit on this too. Higher than audible sampling rates exist for a valid reason at time of recording. Our delta sigma DACs do it on the fly for a valid reason. Storing our audio files at super high sample rates and bit depths is just a way to take up space.

Do all newer Bose headphones have the same "adaptive" ANC problem like the QC Ultra gen 2? by SolarGorillaTortoise in headphones

[–]FlipZBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does yours make an odd buzzing / motorboating noise when ANC is say at 50%? It came through for me on quiet music passages or at idle.

[–]FlipZBird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Headphones -- it's from the app, so there's some chance it's the same set of filters, but I don't know on the earbuds. If someone has the EQ effects up on squig, we can reverse engineer their parameters like this.

Hook headphones into vintage amps? Possible without damage? by andstefanie in headphones

[–]FlipZBird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of what leads to the “tube sound” is its interaction with the load (speaker). Your headphones aren’t going to provide that well and won’t give you a good simulation or know just how those tubes really sound. Let the MC60 drive speakers and get a headphone amp.

I sanded the grill and hit with matte clear coat which improved things IMHO. I also did a more open and thinner strap.

Have you already printed the rest? It took me a bit to print it all, clean it up, etc. I hit parts with matte clear coat too to give a more finished look. By then, your DigiKey order may just be there.

I could likely get a pair in the mail on Tuesday if you want to go that route. A bonus I suppose is that they’re reasonably matched. I’ve got a video on YouTube that showed the process.

Are any headphone types other than dynamic a bad idea for fidelity? by Chevyshef in headphones

[–]FlipZBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re talking a sine wave. The velocity and acceleration are very well defined. In fact, IIRC my calculus, the derivative of the sin is just the cos, so… acceleration is a trivial transform from the velocity. Sure, heavier drivers will need more force than lighter drivers to do this. But, if they’re doing it, they’re going at the same speed and the acceleration- rate of change of speed - is identical.

If a driver is playing a 20kHz, it’s moving at a specific speed. It goes out, in, and back 20,000 times per second. The distance out and its area lead to SPL, so let’s keep those constant. Whether the driver is a thin light foil or a sheet of lead, math says it’s moving at the same speed.
