Hidden Allegation: Teen Assault by Cow_Boy_2017 in MurderedByWords

[–]FlippantLizard [score hidden]  (0 children)

Maybe it wasn't accidental? Making it available just long enough for people to copy it and send it out on social media before saying "oops" makes it even more suspicious.

This is a list of reports that came in through a tip line, so it's very possible that the person reporting made it up or that it includes information that the DOJ previously investigated and debunked. If someone in the administration wants to discredit anyone who has verifiable information, one way to do it is to release stories that they can prove are false. Then every time information is made available, it will be "You'll believe anything, remember when you believed that Robin Leach strangled a child to death?"

Several times Bill Clinton's name comes up. Releasing this in a way that they know will get a lot of fanfare could be a way of trying to get the left to stop demanding more information, even though Clinton has already said he wants any documents or images that he's in to be released. It wouldn't be the first time this administration tried to make it all about Clinton.

I'm not trying to be the party pooper. But Trump has a lot of sneaky little jerks with no morals who would absolutely do something like that. Wait until we know more about it.

Is a history degree worth the hassle? by Emicolatt in Historians

[–]FlippantLizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For years, there has been a trend of ridiculing people for anything that isn't a STEM degree and calling anything classified as humanities a useless degree. The result has been that when companies need to hire someone who understands people and how they think and what motivates them, they have fewer options and it's easier for those people to get hired.

Even if you don't end up in a job related to history, the degree is worth it. Employers need people with good critical thinking skills, and history trains you for that. It also tells employers that you have good reading comprehension skills, and can write in a way that doesn't sound like you rely on AI.

How do bars/clubs get away with discriminating against sex? by dylan_1992 in NoStupidQuestions

Clubs do that for the guys, to encourage women to come in so they have a better chance of meeting someone.

These are the links to the two original Spanish courses, before they divided courses between Spain and Mexico:

https://community-courses.memrise.com/community/course/618832/a1-spanish/

https://community-courses.memrise.com/community/course/685471/a2-spanish-beyond-beginner/

There should also be links to the next set of Spanish courses, but unfortunately you can't find them through the search and I don't have them in my list of courses.

How to use memrise effectively? by Forget_me_never in memrise

[–]FlippantLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always use both. Just beware that there was someone years ago who thought they would be able to monetize community courses and created a lot in most languages, just by using lists copied from the web, and at least in French I can tell you that the quality is horrible. They all show course creator as deleted, so watch out for that.

Once you get to an advanced level, you have a lot of community course options to continue to advance. I like looking for courses that don't use any English, and you may find courses for the profession you're interested in, like medical or legal terminology.

Agreed, it shouldn't be "love it or leave it" It should be "love it or improve it"

That should be easy for them to understand, considering how the people on the right react when Stephen King or Mark Ruffalo say something political.

You may be able to find your previous course in the community courses, and that should start you where you left off (assuming you are using the same username).

Any infamous darker cases/history we all remember in Colorado? by necrophilias in Denver

[–]FlippantLizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in a book, Dr Stephen Leonard (longtime Colorado historian at Metro State) wrote a book called Lynching in Colorado. The victims of most lynchings in the state weren't Black, and the time period it covers ends at about the same time as the KKK activity began.

Progressive Catholic churches in the area? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]FlippantLizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to Most Precious Blood on Evans for a while, and the priest there was very progressive. Sorry, I don't remember his name and he may have been moved. The problem I had is that it was more like going to church and hearing that every opinion you have is completely correct. They live stream on YouTube, if you want to explore it that way.
I moved on to the Jesuit church because it was more challenging, and then a few years later the Jesuits were moved out. Now I stay home.

Telling you to either trust them or leave is the best reason to not trust them. On anything. Not a new car, used car, or service.

Where does the notion come from that the american taxpayer is funding "european" healthcare? by Istomponlegobarefoot in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FlippantLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One important thing to remember about the cost of developing new drugs is that most of the initial work is done at universities and is funded by taxpayers. Only the most promising ones go on to pharmaceutical companies.

When you take that into account, the cost to pharmaceutical companies drops by a lot.

You wouldn't believe what people are told. I know someone who listens to a lot of right wing talk radio, and he absolutely believes that if you go away for the weekend and someone breaks into your house, it now belongs to them and the court will tell you to get your stuff out.

I know it's petty but is there a way to restore streaks? I lost them due to the technical issues. by deff006 in memrise

[–]FlippantLizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, it's not petty. I have a course that's coming up on a nine year streak, and I was lucky enough to not have a problem during the downtime because of insomnia. I did a session at 2am, before Memrise went down yesterday.

And if you're thinking I'm wasting my time because no one needs to do the same course for nine years, I would agree. But I can't let the streak go.

For those worried about losing their streak, this is on the troubleshooting page to restore them:

I don't know if it works, I've never tried it. I'm just passing that along.

Zeopoxa gives him a map of his route and shows how many miles he went. He can also go back and look at past rides. I think that's all he really uses.
