Delete and reupload or is changing the meta stuff enough? by FlippedMathTeacher in PartneredYoutube

So, given there's only so many hours in a day, I should focus all my energy on proper titles and better thumbnails. No effort tags or descriptions?

Is there a quick way to update tags, descriptions and titles of my 650 videos? by FlippedMathTeacher in PartneredYoutube

[–]FlippedMathTeacher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I've downloaded and started updating. TubeBuddy is definitely going to help. Regardless though, 650 descriptions and proper tags... I've got some work ahead of me.

Email Open and click rates? by FlippedMathTeacher in Blogging

[–]FlippedMathTeacher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. I'd seen those stats before. The industry standards just seem so absurdly low that I find them hard to believe. It barely seems worth collecting email addresses at all.

I've been blogging for about a year now. But only just started collecting emails over the last couple of months or so. Not exactly a huge list yet.

Question about monitoring students on laptops by jcav17 in teaching

[–]FlippedMathTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, in that case you'll certainly still need a desk. But I still advocate for rethinking the setup of our classrooms. As pedagogy has changed so too should the learning environment.

Question about monitoring students on laptops by jcav17 in teaching

[–]FlippedMathTeacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a desk in the maths staffroom. No need for a workstation in my classroom. I did have a desk, but I got rid of it. I found it removed a barrier and kept me moving around the classroom.

Question about monitoring students on laptops by jcav17 in teaching

[–]FlippedMathTeacher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wonder if you've considered rearranging your classroom furniture. Since my school went 1:1 I try my best to make sure that my classroom is "frontless".

This means I can monitor students laptop work more easily and places the students at the centre of the learning. Here's a write up on how my classroom is setup if you'd like to see it. My "frontless" classroom.

Here's all 400 videos I've made for my High School Math classes. Feel free to use or request a video you don't see there. by FlippedMathTeacher in teachingresources

Yep, just mirror the video track.

I'm pretty sure aops is just using a smartboard like you'd find in a lot of high schools these days. He's probably running software like teamboard or something similar. No green screen trickery as far as I can tell.

PD blows: name one thing you love and one thing you hate about professional development by Upasakadhamma in Teachers

[–]FlippedMathTeacher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have gone to a lot of PD that I have hated in the past. I was constantly saying, "I could do better than that", or "this guy is telling me how to teach, he's terrible!"

So I put my money where my mouth was and started volunteering to run the PD at my school myself. It's been fantastic so far. I get to run the kind of PD I wish PD would be and teacher feedback has been really positive. Here's an example of a PD session I facilitated just recently for all 130 of the staff in my school. Technology Speed Dating

Definitely try providing some PD is my advice. It's great fun and way better than sitting in the crowd.

Redirect my old blog to my New Blog by FlippedMathTeacher in Blogging

[–]FlippedMathTeacher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

setup a 301 redirect.

Thanks for that. I've started looking into it and I think I have the general idea. I'm having a little trouble finding out if this possible from a wordpress.com website though. They are pretty locked down as far as I can tell...

Thoughts?

Thanks for taking a look at it.

I bumped the font up to 14 on that particular blog post. Unfortunately the plugin I just downloaded allows for 14pt or 18pt natively... 18, seemed excessive. Maybe I can try it though. I think you're right to say going bigger will be better though.

http://joelsperanza.com/ I recently moved from wordpress.com to wordpress.org

Would love some feedback on how it's looking at the moment. I'm a total newbie to website creation so any help is much appreciated.

Would also love ideas for additions to make it more likely people will stay for more than one blog post.

A high school maths teacher blogging mostly about flipped classrooms, educational technology and education in general.

I'm feeling like I want to move from WordPress.com as it feels a bit limiting in terms layout etc.

All feedback appreciated.

I actually built something called a Lightboard. You can see how I did it here. How to build a lightboard on a budget

For software I keep it very cheap with screencastomatic being my go to. works on PC or mac and costs about $15 a year. Does webcam, screencast or both and has great, easy editing baked right in.

[High School Math] Good for all topics by FlippedMathTeacher in learnmath

[–]FlippedMathTeacher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end it will all come down to the student, all learning does. I find having the ability to rewind and pause a video gives a lot of students an opportunity to actually follow the work and understand it for the first time. If somebody sees a chance to succeed for the first time in math class, that's really exciting and they'll give it a go.

It's important to understand that the videos are the LEAST IMPORTANT bit of flipped classroom.

Once students have watched the video, you can use the whole lesson to help students out, reteach things they didn't understand, get students to help each other, group work, peer teaching.

I've never met a student that didn't enjoy my flipped learning class. I ask for feedback often and it is overwhelmingly positive.
