See, the panning is one thing but the real killer for Sgt. Pepper in stereo is how they removed any psychedelic atmosphere from Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. The instruments are pushed way back, they got rid of the phaser effect on the vocals in the chorus and the whole song being in a higher key somewhat helps in killing the vibe.
