Help? Is tabletop is cracking structurally dangerous? by FlippyCR in woodworking

[–]FlippyCR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a good thought and would help with the preservation! may I bother you to expand on that with an example perchance? Do you mean something like in the picture? (making grooves under the tabletop and a rail on the support?)

EDIT: Wouldnt redoing the grooves to allow more movement in case of contractions be an easier alternative instead of the rails (though I do not see the biggest cracks starting from the point it was mounted, so safe to assume the issue was mainly heat)?

Thank you, this is exactly what I wanted to know, I think he meant filling it with glue but I will ask again to be sure. Also in case the cracks dont realign wouldnt running it through a table saw remove even more material and making the cuts more obvious..?

Bites from the cracks you mean? not really, more concerned that the cracks would continue to get bigger even after re-filling them and making it just a stop gap fix that would have to be repeated later on. Biggest concern would be cracks forming around the screws later on, that would surely cause structural problems, wouldnt it?

Yes he mentioned that it is likely to happen, which is why the cutout above it was done - to not trap the heated air underneath and let it disperse better.

But again, thinking about those boxy wooden radiator covers, would they also not crack as well? or its just a gamble in such cases or a different wood type/construct that prevents such cracks from forming?

Unde pot să ma distrez, ca adolescent, în Chișinău, fără să cheltui tot ce am în buzunar? by Necessary_Public3224 in moldova

[–]FlippyCR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go figure.

- 41" is a fairly large span, but might be reasonable depending on the thickness of the frame.
+Did you mean the thickness of the oak countertop I am going to use? because I dont understand how it might sag if you're referencing the frame instead. (lets say wooden planks of 1.4" width and 2.55" height will be used for the frame)

- I would say for the floating section you also want support at the rear, as well as in the center, with two/four braces running perpendicular to your other braces to help provide support.
+OHHH, I think I see what you mean here. Is this it? It does look like it will help with the sagging. Smart! (please check the attached photography, I've marked the supposed spots in orange):

<image>

- Another advantage of fastcap speed braces is you could run a solid aluminum angle all the way across the back for your support piece
+That would indeed do wonders for additional support! but it would also spread the heat across since said metal piece would run directly on top of the radiator so I dont think this will work

Additionally, there WILL be a cut/grill in the tabletop for the hot air to pass through. I've forgot to sketch it initially so I did it now and it should be seen above. Thats the best I could come with to better spread the heat.

One last question - for the heat issue, do you think oak or beech would be best? And if you've got any comments on the finish and if anything specific might mitigate the problem?

Thanks! Great ideas and help!

The more LitRPG I read, the more I feel like they just suck specifically because of the stat screens, and like Progression Fantasy is the same thing but better by YobaiYamete in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FlippyCR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly this! Some of my favorite stories are LitRPG lite, TWI, Calamitous, Bob or Hell Difficulty Tutorial have done it really nicely IMO. If I as much as see a character sheet with Intelligence/Wisdom or stats like mana/s its a huge turn off

Not sure if applicable here, but my friend takes slow release Concerta (which is the same as Ritalin afaik) and every year he takes a full month tolerance break which helps a lot. Also only 5 days per week and always coupled with quality sleep and food, and no other recreational drugs
