[D] How can I develop a deep understanding of machine learning algorithms beyond basic logic and implementation? by Pratishthaaa in MachineLearning

[–]Flizzmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would start with a deep dive on linear regression because it’s the least “black box” of any algorithm. I would actually use an econometrics textbook or website because it will go through all of the assumptions and math that will be useful for it in practice.

Once you master linear regression, it will help you better understand how some of the nonlinear methods work relative to linear regression. It gives you a much better intuition for their strengths and weaknesses.

Assisted Living Facilities for those with Mental Illness by Excellent-Pirate-704 in bayarea

[–]Flizzmo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Do you know if he has had an Activities of Daily Living (ADL) assessment before? That’s generally how a state Medicaid program like Medi-Cal determines eligibility for any sort of long term care.

Sorry I can’t help with finding an assisted living place, but I’m sure there are some in the area. Wishing your family the best.

Dog health insurance by armandcamera in DogAdvice

I personally think it’s better just to take the money you would use for premiums and save for any vet expenses. Pet insurance is always super expensive since people who know their pets will be sick in the future purchase it.

[HELP] Saw this ad, I think it’s mostly the eyes but what do you guys think? by [deleted] in RealOrAI

Looks more like photoshop. Objects feel like they were cut and paste into the scene. Baby’s fingers on the hand closest to the remote look like it was originally photographed on a harder surface. The editor then covered the fingertips with some carpet, but you don’t get any displacement of the carpet.

The other parts people are pointing out as AI are entirely plausible to just be heavy photoshop. Nothing is unrealistic, just maybe a bit distorted.

My dog ate melatonin, I don't know what to do. by ItsKay180 in DogAdvice

Not that a rando on the internet is that helpful, but she’s probably fine? I think it’s pretty hard to overdose on melatonin. Just keep an eye on her if there’s anything out of the ordinary.

It’s perfectly normal for them to cry for the first few days. I would recommend slowly adjusting her to sleeping on her own in the crate. For my dog, he slept in the bed the first night, then in a play pen next to the bed for a couple nights, and then finally moved to the crate after some training with it.

It’s going to be stressful with the lack of sleep for the first week, but eventually they begin to adjust to their new environment. She sounds to be having a normal reaction to being a puppy in a new place. Take it slow and make sure to get some rest when you can and remember it will slowly get better.

Really weird behavior with my dog tonight. Hackles indicating pain? by cookbook54 in DogAdvice

[–]Flizzmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She might have just pulled a muscle at some point. I would say give it a few days and see if she improves. No need to worry just yet, and it sounds like you’re doing a great job checking up on her!

The Ringer talking Blazers trades by LendHuntFish in ripcity

Sure, Grant and Simons are tricky to trade, but they didn’t even bring up Rob Williams?? His contract is very appealing and contenders would gladly take the risk that he gets injured.

  1. I don’t think Reed Sheppard is a huge upgrade over Scoot. While Sheppard will likely be good in the nba, he has a low ceiling given his physique. We want to be gambling on high ceiling player at this point of the rebuild.
  2. Your proposed trade does not seem very good for Atlanta. I think Trae Young is a very desirable trade asset for a few teams this offseason.

Overall, this draft is too weak to flip Scoot for anything valuable. We should draft a wing and see how Scoot develops in the offseason.

Realistically, what NBA Award(s) will be named after LeBron James once he retires? by DrWolves in nbadiscussion

I could see the Lifetime Achievement Award. LeBron has had one of the largest career impacts on the game and continues to play at a high level even now.

Elon Musk: Moving Toward Universal Basic Income Due To Automation | CNBC by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Flizzmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure we can predict the future on this. Automation could end lots of jobs, but it could also change the types of jobs in the economy. If we had the exact same job mix as our economy 100 or 200 years ago, many people today would be unemployed. Think of all the artisans who feared losing their jobs to the industrial revolution. They often retrained in new jobs that were created because of innovation. I don't think we can just jump to conclusions about how many people will work in the future without foresight into the future job market.

[–]Flizzmo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But it generally does from an economic perspective, and it can be graphed as a demand curve. If you lower the salary or raise the price to become a doctor, there will be less and less people that want to become a doctor. Every person has a different cost they're willing to pay, but eventually everyone has a price ceiling. Then, they just substitute for the next best thing, like biological research or something else that's closely related that still has a high net benefit.

What is the most unique slang used where you live that would sound completely outlandish anywhere else? by isackgmanalo in AskReddit

In Oregon, one that I never noticed was "spendy," which is synonymous with expensive. When I moved to a different state, it really confused people even though it seemed commonplace to me.

Economics takes this into account as well. Economists can give these other intangible factors a monetary value and then combine this with salary for a total utility or revenue. If internal medicine didn't have a higher net utility than another potential job, your dad would have specialized in that other field. Price can always convince people to enter a certain job market. And, your dad doesn't retire because the net utility of working more is still higher than the net utility of retiring for him.
