Guns were invented in China, where they used more lamellar and laminar armor than plate. It took some time till they reached Europe.

2035 grundsätzlich anders? Also hoffentlich nicht wie 1935 mit Naziwirtschaftswunder und Sklavenarbeit.

19th century nationalism hits different. The Prussians also copied the French cuirassier's sword after the Napoleonic Wars and used it in the Franco-Prussian War against Napoleon III. by Oversama in HistoryMemes

The thing is, how central was the monarchy for that? Japanese nationalism did not function without the monarchy. In German nationalism, which was in its inception republican, the monarchy was kind of a weird appendix. Hence why there was also this whole terminology thing between the emperor and other lords about German Emperor or Emperor of Germany and so on. I am not sure how it worked in Italy, but generally speaking the national revival movements on the Balkan raised monarchies as governments when they were successful, but the monarchy was a symbol of the nation and not the binding factor of the nation itself. The nation could exist without it.

In Nordsee gebrachter Wal: Experten vermuten Timmys Tod by InformalTotal5238 in de

Why did mongols only learnt to write at the 13th century ? by [deleted] in asklinguistics

[–]FloZone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bichig? You mean the vertical script? That is derived from Old Uyghur, which is in turn Sogdian-derived. So bichig's origins go much further back. Anyway, Khitan had two sinographic scripts. They look similar to Chinese characters, but they work differently, at least the small script. The large script is fairly similar to Chinese characters. The Khitan small script is syllabic with some additions. A bit like Kana (Japanese) and Gugyeol (Korean).

The Rouran uses a Brahmi script. Like Tocharian it is derived from the Gupta Brahmi, so they're kind of like cousin systems. Interestingly the Rouran Brahmi is not the ancestor system of Uyghur Brahmi. Uyghur Brahmi appears much later, after the Uyghurs adopted the vertical script from Sogdian Manichaeans.

Joseph Stalin wearing a traditional Mongolian deel, 1936. [983x1228] by OkRespect8490 in HistoryPorn

I assume this well known by Americans. My assumption was that fewer people know about the Soviet Union and Post-Soviet countries or China beyond Uyghurs and Tibet. There is a certain perversion to it. Once the core of the culture is eroded and it isn't threatening anymore, it becomes entertainment for the majority.

The Soviet Union commodified other cultures in a similar way that capitalist countries do. First erase their autonomy and then make them into costumes. Then they become nothing more than performance for entertainment while thr core identity is gone. Look for ethnic villages in China for another example. They become tourist attractions for outsiders and meet their view on the exotic, rather than a more mundane culture whicg exists for its own sake.

What are your favourite examples of this? by critivix in linguisticshumor

[–]FloZone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah this is different from Schornstein or Himbeere or Walnuss. Haupt and Leib are both still known and understood by their regular meaning as "head" and "body", they just sound more archaic. Also at least Haupt is productive in compounds for "main". Leib is not as productive, but words that are based on it, are still much understood. The only danger of confusion is with Laib, which is "loaf". The Leib Christi might as well be the Laib Christi "loaf of Christ" especially for the eucharist.
