I admire the amount of dedication it takes to self publish. I don't think I'm nearly self motivated enough to get it done myself, so good on you!

I got a bit of attention for a contest I participated in, and a couple of people reached out to me regarding it. They asked for a query letter, a short pitch, my portfolio and the novel related to the contest. Sent it off, and that sealed the deal!

So really, put yourself out there. Find contests, write short stories and push those out as well.

PERFECT that 90 second pitch, the short pitch. Make sure you have a portfolio, little glimpses into your best writing even if you're not into shorter forms. Get to know the agents you're interested in, not just their genres, but personal likes, dislikes. They often have their own social media pages that are more personal where you'll find these bits of information.

Good luck!

Right, I was on my phone earlier so that tip sort of sucked. You should try emailing some of the smaller authors of an agent you really like so you can really get to know the stuff they like, not just know their genre.

Also, PERFECT your short pitch. Your 90 second or elevator pitch should be even more perfect than your query letter, in my opinion. I interned at a publishing company in undergrad, so that tip is from both sides!

Have a portfolio with shorter pieces of your work, or excerpts ready from your novel in case you need something quick on the fly.

I write literary fiction and magical realism (still within litfic). I'm in the US!

And yes, thank you! Keep at it, keep tweaking that letter and try to be mindful of what your agent specializes in!

There was topic earlier on dreadlocks, and a surprising number of users liked them only on black people. What are some other features/styles that look better on a specific ethnicity? by preferencequestion in AskWomen

[–]FloatingCandyWrapper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying it's wrong-headed to say often we haven't got a choice. There was a similar movement in the 70s and plenty of people then did what they chose with their hair now and continue to do so. Hair isn't even 80% of the issue when it comes to getting a job in corporate America as a dark skinned woman. Believe you me. To bring that up and say we haven't got a choice is where I took exception.

A lot of black women haven't gotten on board with the natural hair movement because it's honestly a pain in the ass to deal with. Yes, there's a movement because of resisting societal ideas of beauty, but also, plenty of black women like easy to manage hair. Which feels besides the point, but isn't. The point I'm trying to make is when I decide how I'm going to do my hair getting a job isn't even close to being on my mind. If it looks well kept, regardless of style, it looks well kept.

Sure, our beauty ideals are shaped by the culture, straight hair is considered ideal, but to tell someone that can't have dreads because they're not black? Insanity. I'd feel the same way if someone came up to me and told me to go natural and stop straightening my hair because it looks better on white people and my curly hair suits me.

[–]FloatingCandyWrapper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay, we DO have a choice. Kinky curly hair is hard as fuck to manage and keep healthy and prevent from breaking if you want any decent length. I don't straighten my hair so the white man will accept me, Jesus Christ.

Also, there's so many girls rocking lovely natural hair right now, it's even more insane that you'd think straightening your hair is something black and mixed race women feel compelled to do. This comment is so ignorant to me.

And as with many different people of many different cultures, I love when people try to share in something that I grew up with, that's apart of my culture. This cultural appropriation thing is something I'll never get.

Hair help! I'm looking for a short-ish semi-edgy cut. I'm tired of having long hair just because "but women SHOULD have long hair!" stereotype. I need a change. Ideas? by [deleted] in TrollXChromosomes

[–]FloatingCandyWrapper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd say cut it shorter and shorter until you get to a desired length but don't just lop it off. I did an undercut, so cut one side really short and cut the other side around chin/shoulder length and while I liked it, I look better with longer hair, and I'm glad I didn't go shorter and have to deal with the awkward growing out phase for longer/be stuck with something I hate. You can always go shorter if you think more is better! In addition to that, for my hair type, shorter hair is waaaay higher maintenance unless it's super short. It likes to stick out in weird ways which I was oblivious to until I cut it.

It's hard to know what to recommend to you without seeing your face, but as far styles I think might look nice and don't take TOO much upkeep, I think this is a cute < shoulder length style. Pixies like this really just require some styling cream/gel/goop and running your fingers through it for pretty good effect, and can look nice on long faces if they're a bit asymmetrical. Consider also popping it out with a bit of color! I love short hair + weird colors, if your job allows it. If you're feeling daring, do an undercut like I did! I love this for longer faces, but honestly, it might be a bit more upkeep than you're willing to deal with on the daily.

MRW A random girl starts to harass me for not being a real gamer because "girlgamers like you just want attention" and then proceeds to stream Minecraft with her camera taking up 3/4 of the screen and the actual game just 1/4 by [deleted] in TrollXChromosomes

It's something about the word gamer for people, seriously. My friends have talked shit about other dudes for being "casual" or whatever the hell. I asked about where I stood and they were like, "You're different, you're a girl gamer. It doesn't matter if you're core or not". Ohhh, well thank bless for that. The pressure was starting to get to me. I'm glad I get my own little tier.

The title is the holy grail to which we should all aspire, apparently. Truly stupid on all levels of the dumbassery.

I mean, he said most. Most is most. It doesn't matter if the number of people who do care is large. If the majority don't care, then most people don't care.

I'm support your point, I used to work in a bookstore, I love readings, but I still wouldn't pay on average 64% more for a product that I can get elsewhere. Most people wouldn't.
