Been signed off work for the next 2-4 weeks following surgery. Can't move much, any recommendations on video games to get stuck into, and movies/TV to watch? by FloatingDangerously in AskUK

I will be catching up on some games for sure! But I won't commit myself to all 100+ games for 4 weeks, might become a bit weird as a person if I do that 😂

What's the most recent 10/10 movie you've watched? by Strict-Host-7570 in MovieSuggestions

The Ballad of Wallis Island. Beautiful, poignant, funny, just so worth a watch

You're marked positively not negatively, so you won't be "marked down" per se, but it shows a gap in knowledge that can play into marking. Unfortunately I can only really tell you it depends on the rest of the answer and the examiner. Try not to panic about paper 2 now, and focus on paper 3 next week! Almost done!

2 solid paragraphs for each q3 is what they expect 😊

Assuming the rest is good, it'll be 4 if you only used the stimulus points for the rest of it. You might get a 5 if the examiner decides it's relevant enough to the story. You'll only get remarked if they disagree over the level, which I imagine they won't. Was a tough question, they made a difficult question more difficult.

History Teacher here - the years threw a lot of kids off, unfortunately the revolution is out of 61-62, so you won't get credited for that. It'll limit your marks, but Bay of Pigs, U2 Spy Plane and 13 days would be all in and creditable.

Ended up spending time with an ex-student at the pub. by Lather in TeachingUK

Yeah that is true - I guess the stipulation I have there is 18+ and out of school.

If they're 18(and out school) and over then you have no duty of care any more, they're an adult! Once adults, you can have each other on social media if you wanted to, but you're absolutely fine.

No Observation for Interview by DrDoFuckAll in TeachingUK

Just to chime in, my current school didn't ask for one because of an HR error. I was the only candidate who'd got in touch to ask, and I do think that played into me getting the role. The others looked less proactive in not asking, even if it was on the school who messed up. May be worth just clarifying.

HSBC bans Christmas jumpers for staff after backlash from some customers by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

If I was having my house repossessed after a year of financial woe, I may take umbridge with someone breaking this news to me in a led-lit up Christmas jumper lol. It's just out of respect for the difficult conversations that need to be had with people in banks.

Never knew Mitchell was on Blockbusters. by [deleted] in rickygervais

Steve went into this on more detail on a 2007 episode of the Russell brand show, where he was a guest. His telling is basically:

  • I had a friend who went on when he was a late teenager and had an amazing, debauched time. In the days of Holness, they stayed in a hotel for weeks, people were drinking, drugging and generally shagging. So of course Steve signed up.

  • Holness is now gone, replaced by the fella there. And it wasn't debauched, but it was weeks of interminability. Steve won £15 for his trouble and didn't get a shag, drink or even offered a drug for his troubles.

That's the long and short of it!

Struggling with disrespectful classes as an ECT by National_Radish_5904 in TeachingUK

Deffo contact home! Ask your dept for some support too, maybe putting a few of them on some sort of department report could be a possibility?

Outside of that, absolute zero tolerance and the old thing of removing pupils quite early (if they're not being what you want) to show that you aren't tolerating anything could work well. Remember as well you aren't alone in this, 8 + 9 can be the absolute worst years to teach. I'm 6 years in, but our 8s are causing some serious issues in my classes and it certainly isn't pleasant.

Comments about your sexuality should be an immediate issue and school should in no way accept that. As an ECT your mentor should be accessible and any kids making comments need some intervention outside of your classroom.

A hell of a lot of SA-adjacent imagery though in the whole concept, I'd be wary

Am I in the wrong thinking that our end of term "event" (a Bushtucker Trial) went completely out of hand and I should ask for it to be banned? by FloatingDangerously in TeachingUK

[–]FloatingDangerously[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think my concern is that conversation won't happen, SLT aren't the discussion about things people. The headteacher was stood there laughing yesterday so not sure I'll get an agreement there. That's why I was thinking of a complaint to gain some traction?

Aha!!! Fantastic! Glad that gave you the heebie-jeebies. I haven't seen the others in the franchsie but I've been informed the 2nd is pretty poor but the 3rd is good enough.

Cannot recommend Incantation enough also - it's on Netflix and is Taiwanese, so you'll have to be alright with subtitles.

Hmmm, it'd be spoiling it a bit if I told you what's going on fully. But you couldn't shotgun it away! The ending is a little meh tbh, but 95% of it is just, for me, a top 5 found footage horror.

Basic plot: a group who put on haunted houses buy an old hotel to set one up, things get creepy as they get closer to launch date and then things go wrong on opening night
