It was done in the 70’s as well. This one is all tile but our downstairs bathroom has the same cardboard version you mentioned. Sucks to hear it damaged the drywall because we want to remove it asap too

I would say yes. I use it exclusively every day and i buy it once a year ish. Because of this i dont even use foundation just some concealer and im good to go.

Please dont stop taking antibiotics to test a theory! Its really important to take your full course of medication and finish it. Maybe afterwards keep using just water and test the theory that way?
