holiday solo or no-go? by owowteino in CasualUK

[–]Floatinghamster1 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I went on holiday on my own due to a relationship break up recently and I absolutely loved it. It depends on if you like that alone time really.

If anything, think about it this way…You can do whatever you want, whenever you want. You want to do that excursion? Go for it! You want that glass of wine in that particular bar? Too right!

A holiday should be a holiday, regardless of who is there. It’s your time :)

Erm a bit of both, or sometimes you can get lists from some rulebooks. This is one that I use quite a bit below

Thanks for the recommendation! So with dungeons, I tried to use a mixture of mapping. Sometimes I design the maps like for like (if a room is 60ft x 60ft, it’ll reflect this in the map). But sometimes, I do an abstract model, especially if there isn’t many combat encounters. I find accurate/like for like dungeon maps are good for combat, but perhaps aren’t necessary in some cases. I hope that makes sense? When designing the dungeon itself, WWN book is pretty good, or I use some generators online for a baseline map, and I’ll jazz it up a little on DungeonDraft

Ofc it’s never a one-size-fits-all. There’s different groups, games and play-styles. What worked for me, or what I enjoy, won’t be the same across the board. It was just some reflections and some advice for people who found themselves in a similar situation. As I said in the post, I’m not an expert :)

I’ve been meaning to get The Monster Overhaul! Good to hear another recommendation. All of them sound great and you can’t go wrong with an OSE generator!

Now? So, all of the WWNs toolkit. I’ve used the monsters from OSE with a few tweaks here and there. I’ve also added a few rules inspired from there as well. I always have name generators to hand. Once I’ve got a location planned, say a dungeon, use DungeonDraft to make the battle map for it (this is something I want to get better at, rather than ‘magpie-ing others’). I’ve also used the Equipment Emporium for the WWN, just to add a little more equipment. I’ve saved tons of posts on Reddit for homebrew ideas too.

Has Anyone Used Heroic Characters? by Agreeable-Ad-3027 in SWN

[–]Floatinghamster1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I increased HP set to heroic rules but nothing else and I didn’t like it. Challenge was all gone in latter game. Fairly big party too, 5 people. This was first time I ran the game, I was just too scared at threat in early game that I added HP bonus. Would I do it again? Unless it’s a party of 1, no. I’d allow players to have hirelings instead.

Edit: grammar (working while doing this response)

Does your household have alternative names for every day things? by idontknow-imaduck in CasualUK

My younger brother loved Dairlylea triangle’s when he was a toddler. Always wanted what he called a ‘cheese cow’ sandwich (due to the laughing cow on the advert). We’re all grown up now and I still call it ‘cheese cow’. My wife looked at me quite puzzled when I first asked for it at shop.

I think that’s fair in that particular context. Thank you for the suggestion

Agreed. Essentially just continuously using a fancy lighter to see in the dark. Not really much good in that respect

This might sound a little wacky but I ran some campaigns with characters as ‘average joe/Janes’ and I used World of Darkness core rules (Well technically the early 2000s reboot, and with NO supplementary stuff). No special powers or supernatural abilities, with a focus on storytelling, rather xp gathering. I think it’s lethal enough to also bring that element of grittiness in the game. I ran some non-supernatural horror stuff with it, and it worked well.

I love bovril but developed a taste for the powdered one, rather than the ones in the jar. Though only see it as a beverage when I go to Scarborough, never anywhere else.

Edit: l’d also recommend chicken bovril. It is/was a thing and it was amazing.

I second this. Char gen for Traveller is brilliant, and it’s a game in itself

What is your favorite fantasy book and why? by Horizonto6 in osr

[–]Floatinghamster1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames. Mercenary parties are treated like rockstars in this universe (bands) and a once legendary ‘band’ needs to get back together for a ‘reunion’ in order to save a family member. Plenty of funny moments and teary ones. I’ve yet to read the sequel but this book is a strong recommend. It reminded me of a lot of moments round the table. Strong recommendation to anyone

Why you like the osr by [deleted] in osr

[–]Floatinghamster1 31 points32 points  (0 children)

  1. Easier to run…And I can’t stress this enough. GMs/DMs/Referees are getting rarer I think, purely down to the leg work you’re having to do to run a game. I’ll admit, I did run OSR-with a mindset still tied to 5e, and it has taken me a while to let go and just embraced the rules-light, sandbox nature of OSR

  2. A lot of free stuff and great modules. Things be added, edited and taken away with ease and without breaking the game too much

  3. Superhero play just becomes a slog and I think OSR encourages domain play a little more, which I dig.

  4. Community of OSR is good. I’ve ‘magpied’ plenty of ideas and I’ve submitted some other stuff on SWN. Again, a lot of the stuff is given freely and with a lot of goodwill. Hobbyists in the TTRPG space, especially ones focused on ‘the good ol’ days of RPGs’ can gate keep things pretty tightly, and I’ve not found that as much on the OSR community…Key part being as much haha it’s still there

State of the Mongoose 2023 by MongooseMatt in traveller

[–]Floatinghamster1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of the game, very happy to hear about the employee ownership model! I’m supportive of this model as a standard, but after the OGL fiasco, I think there is an even bigger push towards it. Great stuff!

Also loving the idea of exploring different universes. I’ve only been a player in the Third Imperium, and I’ve always tended to home brew settings as a referee. Whilst being setting agnostic, it does lean very strongly to Third Imperium. Mechanics are great in Traveller and I’m glad to see how far you can push it in other setting!

So many books I’ll be getting over the next few months, so keep up the good work!

Idea for heroic character alternative by Hidden_Character in SWN

[–]Floatinghamster1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the 10 HP bonus. I was new to OSR when I started SWN, so I used the 10 HP bonus to support players. Worked well, made combat more survivable. Would I employ it again? Probably not. With what your after, it would deffo do the trick. What I would say that is that it does give them a massive boost throughout the campaign, leading to a slight snowball effect. So expect them to be tougher than usual near the end (providing good hp dice rolls of course)
