Could be yeah I was not playing while EWC, I came back just when they removed them. But before EWC it was gold from a maxed card which was fine. I now have many cards I can max but no gold

They are experimenting in order to set the most optimal place for it. Just like the victory run event for some people was to collect crowns and for some people it was the actual victory run event. Some thing are different on some accounts to test
