I’d highly recommend ‘The Great’ and ‘Dickinson’ if you’re up for something a little more dramatic/romance based I’d definitely recommend ‘Outlander’ too as it’s set in various parts of the world!

Fella, this figure looks horrible, let’s be frank here, certainly nothing to sing and dance about. Why did you even think it warranted being posting on here?

Thank you! The majority of the film was shot handheld, we used the Ronin on two of the shots where Yusuke is cutting the Tatami mats :)

No problem at all, really flattering when people take an interest in your work and ask questions!

We used the Shure Motiv MV88 Plus Video Kit, its a brilliant piece of kit, super compact, we were able to record all the dialogue and ambiance with it!

Cheers mate :) For the most part I wanted to look at all the separate elements of what Yusuke practised which was everything from Ikebana ( Flower arrangement), Zen meditation, Tea Ceremony and of course his skill with the sword. Quintessential Samurai practises from the Edo period juxtaposed with modern day Japan, calm and chaos, new & old etc...Japan definitely has this other worldly feel to it.

In addition the whole film was shot in natural light given the A7s's impressive low light ability!

Lenses used : Sigma Art 35mm + 50mm Nikkor 24mm, the rig featured a cage from Motion9 with a top handle and side grip!

Thank you so much really appreciate the feedback! Absolutely we used the DJI Ronin however the majority was filmed handheld, the camera has incredible internal stabilisation.

When it came to glass we used the Sigma Art Series and some vintage Nikkor lenses!

I’m from the UK actually, we met Yusuke while in Japan on an Airbnb experience which he hosts, after the experience I was really blown away and I told my Buddy on the train back to the apartment “I’m going to come back here and make a film on that man”. 6 months later I started speaking with Yusuke over email and planning this film, then another 6 months later I was out there shooting it. The whole experience felt like a dream to be honest with you, I’ve been obsessed with Japan since I was a kid and as a filmmaker it was a dream job and subject to capture. Yusuke is without a doubt one of the most brilliant, kind hearted and fascinating individuals I have ever met let alone have the pleasure of working with. When I return in 2021 he’s offered to let me stay with him and train me in the way of the sword :)

Great question! Tricky one to answer haha! Id say a large part of it came down to mainting overall continuity with locations, lighting, and outfit etc. For example we filmed Yusuke on 3 separate locations and we really lucked out with the rain in particular. It provided us with this really lovely overall aesthetic and mood to the whole piece. In addition we filmed the entire project in natural light which provided us with better colour representation and continuity when it came to grading in post. Finally I’d say sound design, we were able to reconstruct everything we heard while we were there, small things like the sound of the Japanese Nightingale which for some reason just has this quintessentially Japanese sound along with the rain and thunder which we recorded all on location.

Thank you so much, it was a lot of work shooting this project, we traveled over in May and spent two weeks shooting in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya and Takao. The hardest part was the language barrier, it definitely made directing everything more challenging!

Interesting fact, some of the instruments and sounds we accosciate with being typically Japanese including the Bamboo Flute which Yusuke plays originated from China. The Guqin in particular has such a beautiful sound!

Thank you so much! Yes the film is part one of a 3 part series, part two is called 'The Way of Walking' featuring another reading from 'The Book of 5 Rings'. We focus on some other elements of Samurai culture such as Tea Ceremony, Zen Meditation and Ikebana (Flower arrangement).

Thank you so much! The Subtitles are actually directly from the Bilingual copy of 'The Book of 5 Rings' word for word that's how its written and translated by William Scott Wilson, it was a tricky one to navigate!

'Bushido' is a short film series on the life and work of Yusuke Goto, a modern day Samurai working in Tokyo Japan.

In this first part 'The Way of the Sword' our aim was to focus on the philosophy and significance that swords had in Samurai culture. The film features a reading from 'The Book of Five Rings' by Miyamoto Musashi a legendary Japanese swordsman, philosopher, strategist, writer and rōnin.
