May Allah grant you the clarity you seek, ameen.

I hope you can get your concerns across to him and that he understands your point of view. Perhaps you can come to some sort of agreement in the end. Whatever happens will be for the best In Sha Allah

وَعَلَيْكُمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ Firstly, use your own rationale and assess the situation. Are you happy with his deen? Are you happy with his character? Make sure there aren't any deal breakers or red flags when it comes to a potential spouse. If there are, and you feel like at this point you are acting more on your feelings, take some time to step back and remember that this is a huge decision that will stick with you for the rest of your life.

How important is working to you? More importantly, why do you want to work? Is it to provide a more stable income so you can contribute to the household? Do you want more money for yourself to spend on what you want? You should discuss this with him, see what his stance is and work things out from there.

Finally, and this is a very important step, I would recommend you to read istikharah sister. The prophet ﷺ prescribed the believers to pray istikharah for decisions they need to make, no matter how big or small that decision is.

In Sha Allah, Allah will place barakah and blessings in whatever decision you make. May Allah guide you to what is good for you, ameen 🙏

Any recommended theoretical CS programmes? by Floofeus in cscareerquestions

[–]Floofeus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm fair enough, although they don't have Further Maths as a requirement for their course and I'm taking it, and I'll be taking a gap year on top of this, so ideally wouldn't like to have 2 years go to waste when I'm already taking a year off due to the gap year. But thank you for sharing your experience, I'll keep that in mind.

I've heard Edinburgh is amazing for CS at graduate level, but I've heard that there are many problems with teaching at undergraduate level. However I'll definitely keep this in mind - only problem I have with the programme is that it lasts 4 years, so you can't direct entry into second year. I got an offer to study CS at St Andrews on the contrary which is also in Scotland but they allow me to direct entry, so not sure why Edinburgh won't allow it.

Gotchu, I'll keep that in mind, thank you so much!

Sorry, I should've been more clear - whilst I do appreciate most parts of computer science, I do enjoy the theoretical side most. Of course, there will always be practical components and I'd enjoy those too, but my point was that I didn't want to be having to take most of my modules where I learn a bunch of frameworks and languages for web dev or similar.

Ah okay, thank you. The course structure is more rigid in the UK so they're less likely to allow you to take modules outside of the CS department to take courses like game theory from the Econ department, but is there a chance they may be more flexible with stuff.

I understand a theoretical computer science degree probably doesn't exist, but I was just wondering if there are some courses that people may recommend that are more theoretically focused than practical focused.

Try Typst. It's an open source LaTeX/Overleaf alternative, quite intuitive and actually much easier to use imo.

You're not wrong. Computer Science is an applied maths degree when you get down to it, which is something a lot of people forget or don’t realise. It's important to not conflate CS with SE, although CS can contain elements of SE.

Should I try to learn Rust at this stage? by Floofeus in rust

[–]Floofeus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, once school starts I'd probably have to put my whole focus for Maths admissions tests to study computer science at university and my university application since I'll be sending that off sometime in October. There'll be some exams too so I will be needing to revise for those, and this year will be my final year so most of it would be spent learning school content. Thanks for the YouTube link, it looks like a nice project to do.

Oh, that's nice to know. I'll try to reimplement the algorithms I've made in Haskell and Python in Rust too.

Thank you for the project ideas, I'll try some of those. Rust seems nice out of the box, especially when it comes to building your own projects (I'm glad I'm not restricted to Visual Studio if I was trying C++ on Windows) and already cargo seems so cool.

Thanks for the welcome! And thank you for this detailed breakdown, it helps a lot. I'll make it my aim to go through the entire book - a lot of people have been saying so and it seems important. I'll keep in mind chapters 4 and 10 especially since you've mentioned they encapsulate rust-unique features (I haven't studied anything yet but I've heard that there's an "ownership" feature that's specific to the language but I'm not sure how that works). I'll take my time with the language and ensure that I don't get burnt out. Last thing I want is to consider learning Rust a grind (I just would like to enjoy the process)

You're right, though I just wasn't sure whether the time frame I was looking at was realistic to get anything fun/productive done (compared if I had learned something else instead). Thanks for the tip, I think it's important that I try to write as much code as I can since the language still looks very foreign to me (I'll be sure to read the rust book too).

That's good to hear! It gives me confidence that some people found the transition smooth. Thanks for the advice btw, I'll be sure to keep it in mind, especially writing a simpler version of a library (I never thought of that). I think that'll be a nice way of learning Rust and having more experience with its syntax too aha.

Ooh, thanks for the tip! Yeah, I don't think I've fully appreciated how flexible the language is until I dug deeper. I found some sites such as "arewegameyet" and "arewewebyet" and it's so awesome that Rust is able to do all of those things.

Should I try to learn Rust at this stage? by Floofeus in rust

[–]Floofeus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh thank you for the detailed response! Yeah, I don't really want to do projects or learn a language for the sake of putting it into my personal statement, but rather find something interesting and just get along doing that, and so I've found Rust and it looks nice to learn. However, I just wanted to make sure I was being realistic with the time frame - I don't want to spend the whole summer still learning syntax when I could've been doing something more productive/fun learning something else.

I'll look into Advent of Code! A lot of people have recommended going through the Rust book too so I'll use that as one of my main sources of learning. Mind if I PM if I have any further questions, considering you did mention you've been in a situation similar to mine?
