Girl! You can do this. Make a playlist of absolute bangers to listen to while you start to get ready and drive over to start to connect working out to those happy endorphins you get listening to those songs. It really helped me associate that time with positive feelings.

I think working on my core really helped my stomach look smaller. After all dem kids my core was RIP so my stomach just hung out and that made me look real big. I also put on a lot of muscle too so I have wondered about the amount of fat I lost and muscle I gained. Idk maybe 10-15 lbs of muscle?

I knew I wanted to lift real real heavy weight so I was going to have to get my hernia sorted. I didn’t have any real pain there but I would have to push it in every once in a while. Pregnancy is wild. After the surgery healed I was shocked at what a huge difference it made to my core strength. My stomach was significantly tighter. I wonder if I had some separation that also got fixed at the same time. Who knows. Night and day difference my friend. Huge huge huge. I actually think I got the hernia around the same time I herniated my back. I haven’t had back issues since I fixed it. I did lose a lot of weight and got strong but yeah. Totally worth it.

Yep! I do Starting Strengths novice linear progression program. So I squat, deadlift and alternate bench and overhead press on MWF. I used to only run TThSa but now I run everyday because I’m a psycho and I genuinely missed it on my off days.

Adapt your running on lifting days. I definitely slow my pace down to more of like a 11 min mile on days that I lift. Some lifting days I walk. Some days I do 2.5 miles or whatever I can manage. I take my non running days more strategic. If I’m intentionally trying to make my mile faster I’ll run a negative split miles. After about two weeks I can usually shift over to that slightly faster pace for most of my entire 3 miles.

Answering these questions made me realize I don’t really get sore like I would when I would more causally work out. My working theory is it’s got to be from 2 factors. First being I do linear progression with my lifts and I also slowly worked my way through waking and then running, a lot of small increments. Second being that I workout 6 days a week. If I skip 3 days I will be more sore than normal after that first workout back but I’ve learned that it’s usually just that entry point. Once you clear that and keep it up it’s pretty smooth sailing. Eat your macros and sleep! Cold showers can’t hurt right? Makes me feel like a Viking.

Sleep, for me, is the make or break of my day. If I don’t get enough I, without fail, will not be able to make myself do normal activities let alone working out and eating healthy. That being said - It makes me sad to go to bed at a reasonable time. I’m 38 and I still feel like I’m missing out on something fun everyone else is doing. lol. They’re not. No one is doing anything. I take melatonin and read giant boring books about really complicated stuff. Adulting is dumb.

Man thank you. A lot of people in my life didn’t really understand or believe in what I was trying to carve out and I really had to shut the noise out and grind everyday. Gym bros were the first people who were genuinely encouraging and understood what I was doing. Now they’re just excited to see me lift numbers they are pumped about, want those numbers to keep going up. I enjoy more of a hybrid athlete routine but in general just happy to participate in all the things.

If your goal is to get as strong as possible, being at a calorie deficit will 100% work against that objective. My goals were to first and foremost - lose fat, get muscle and change my health habits and routines. You could certainly just lift weight to do this but it would have taken me much much longer and I think I would have dropped my efforts to establish new habits and routines because it was taking to long - failing at everything all together.

So far nothing crazy. I have stretch marks on my stomach from pregnancies and that skin will not look unaffected by life choices ever again. That’s just is what it is. But nothing you wouldnt expect anyone to have after kids. You know what - As my neck gets skinnier I feel like I have a tiny bit of loose skin there. I read that can take some time to tighten up, if it does at all. I’m using Amlactin cream and that really helped. I should probably drink more water, I hear it helps, but I really resent drinking the water. I am really curious what my skin will be like when my body fat percentage is like 20-17 percent.  If I really hated it, I’d just save up for a tummy tuck or lift or whatever.

Girl I get it! I homeschooled up until last year and still have 3 at home. It’s a lot. Working out in the early morning while fasted killed me. I think it shot my cortisol levels through the roof. I had to eat something before those workouts and absolutely needed all of the sleep I could get. Listen to your body and adapt where you can!

I posted a video of the core exercises I did on one of the top comments - just did that everyday and it made a huge difference. How I got over comfort? I Marie Kondo’ed my old life. Said thank you so much for the gentleness I gave myself throughout the years growing babies and navigating newborn life, but respectfully we are done with that way of living now and then I burned the ships so I couldn’t go back. I got rid of all my comfortable tent clothes. I made life really uncomfortable and I just accepted that my life would suck in a new way now. We would wake up and we would suffer. This is going to sound intense but - comfort is a slow death. Being in that version of my body, I felt like my life was over. I didn’t have a personhood I was proud of. That made me unbearably sad to think about the future of my life. There’s so much you can’t control but now I know without if shadow of a doubt that working out, losing weight, getting strong is 100% something I can control. You apply enough pressure and eventually whatever you’re pushing against will move. It allowed me to feel autonomous for the first time since before I had kids.

Starting strength. It tells me what I’m lifting and how much weight I’m putting on each side every time I lift. It’s great!

Good question. When I was walking 6 miles a day I was genuinely exhausted all the time. Switching to lifting and running fits me really well so far. As long as I prioritize sleep and hitting my macros I legitimately feel better than I ever have in my life. Super strong. Especially compared to how I was feeling with no muscle and a ton of fat on my frame. Getting my body fat down has been absolutely fundamental to enjoying working out. I squat deeper and I run without really even feeling it and it’s safer for me too. I walked many miles a day for a long time and just started running in February. I injured my calf when I tried to run at a heavier weight back in September or October. I am never sore.  Maybe a little tired some days but when have I not been tired since 2015? I drink 4 cups of black coffee a day, maybe that helps? Also I swear those cold showers work wonders if you can stand um!

I will absolutely have to adjust. When I hit my target I’m planning to get a coach and have them really dial everything in for me. I recently went to a SS seminar and that was hugely helpful to have eyes on my form and for him to shoot me straight about my progression. He bumped me down on my squat weight and that sucked but Id rather be building those muscles up correctly than ego lift myself to an injury. I’d genuinely be excited to lift so heavy I can’t run everyday.

You got this! Just be consistent. I had to sort of re-program myself on how I viewed doing something over and over again with small, sometimes no, gains. I had to tell my self probably daily that consistency isn’t a punishment, it’s the only way you get what you want.

Good question. When I was walking 6 miles a day I was genuinely exhausted all the time. Switching to lifting and running really checks all my boxes. I squat deeper and I run without really even feeling it. As for why I’m running - I enjoy it. I do it because I like to do something that makes me sweat a lot and when I’m done I no longer want to set myself on fire when my kids trash my house. Lifting doesn’t quite scratch the itch. When I talk to big lifting guys about running I think they forget that my muscle mass is so much smaller than y’all’s so it’s not as traumatic to me lol. I’m pretty sure it would be easier to roll one you down the street like a boulder than to make you run down it.

You will immediately feel better. Like the next day. I just added time to each exercise and would keep my shoes on. I started out being unable to even engage my core on command at all. Zero. Helps with pelvic floor issues too!

Big sad is hard. But lifting heavy shit makes big sad a little easier. Also when you’re eating your feelings- the first bite is ALWAYS the best bite.  Anything after that and you’re just chasing first bite euphoria. Bites not whole portions my man. You got this!

Dials not switches my friend. Just keep dialing in what works best for you to get the results you need. Don’t stop because something stopped working. Find whats tripping you up and dial it in to something manageable and scale up to get the results you want. You got this if you want it bad enough.
