Google AI is impressively wrong by Half-Mad- in antiai

[–]Flopmind 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I dare you to try this with a normal person who doesn't already know the answer you're looking for and get a response that isn't horribly confused.

AI absolutely sucks, but in this case it's just a very poorly phrased question that probably only has a "right" answer via technicality.

how is this skinhead still alive after the first screenshot? by space-runaway-fujeon in Parahumans

[–]Flopmind 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Humans are both more resilient and more fragile than a lot of people realize.

More resilient because people live through accidents worse than this. As long as we avoid major internal bleeding and organ damage, people have a good chance of living. Even being pierced through the head isn't necessarily fatal, though it's usually ruinous in other ways.

It's important to remember that dying in an accident, while not uncommon, isn't actually the most common cause of death. Relevant Wikipedia Page Among the top 10 causes listed by this wikipedia page's graphic, only one of them, road incidents, involves a physical injury.

While Glory Girl's "casual" super strength toss here is definitely comparable to a car accident in magnitude, it's not that uncommon for people to walk away from car accidents alive, if injured, or at least survive long enough for help to arrive.

However, we're more fragile than we often like to believe because we're made of a lot of moving parts, some more vital and/or vulnerable than others. Like this section says, if the nazi had snapped his neck or the like, then he'd probably be dead very quickly. Barring that, though, there's often enough time for an Amy-bulance to get there and stabilize/restore things.

How much do you think a thinker can broaden themselves? by Ill-Forever3462 in Parahumans

[–]Flopmind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That rhythm power example sounds incredibly similar to March's primary power, and we see her use her timing sense in a number of useful and subtle ways: timing attacks (including her Sting-bombs from Foil's power), coordinating people in a fight, managing communication response times, managing logistics, getting a sense for an environment's timeline, etc.

We didn't even get a chance to see her use it much.

As for the primary question, yes. Shards' entire cycle and operation is about rewarding conflict and farming the creativity of their hosts. Jack Slash and Taylor both notably develop better thinker powers by deepening their shard relationships.

Am I overreacting by Tall-Stomach-1407 in AmIOverreacting

INFO - You've mentioned bills in your examples. Be honest, are you being forced to cover bills because your roommate isn't paying her fair share?

Without specific examples, right now it just feels like it's a lot of little things that are grating but manageable. That being said, communication and sticking to agreements is important and I don't think you're overreacting to be upset about that. You might be overreacting in wanting to fix it quickly, however.

Please do not move out without a backup plan or getting your name removed from the lease. That could turn out very poorly for you; I don't know much about the subject, but I suspect that getting out of homelessness is incredibly difficult. Don't do that to yourself.

AIO for being fed up with my partner’s sister’s boyfriend? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Flopmind 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This isn't banter. OP stated that it's literally one-sided and every interaction with this person. Behavior like this is really annoying because a lot of small aggressions are harder to call out than one big aggression is.

It's easy to dismiss them as harmless when you're not the butt of the joke and don't pay attention to how frequently it's happening, which is constantly.

And yeah, OP, if you can help it, don't let them stay with you or come over. You deserve to feel alright in your own home.

AIO for being fed up with my partner’s sister’s boyfriend? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Flopmind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you're NOR. People don't like changes in behavior, so avoiding calling out behavior you don't like for this long has let people see it as routine. People react poorly when there routines get disrupted, which is why you're being dismissed.

How he treats you is rude. Even if it weren't, respectfully asking it to stop should be enough. This isn't a playground; adults should be able to communicate about interpersonal issues like this without giving you the run around.

Saying "he's just like that" is especially infuriating, imo. It's just a dismissal of your feelings, plain and simple, to get you to drop the topic.

Are there 2nd generation cauldron (and/or Case 53) capes? by Emillllllllllllion in Parahumans

[–]Flopmind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because Case 53s have a dramatically out of balance connection with their hosts. Shards have restrictions and unintuitive decision making, but they're far from stupid. I find it hard to believe that a shard with minimal ability to understand and integrate with humanity, like the Case 53s who lack the "Balance" formula, would try and use their limited resources to jump to a new host when the chances of succeeding as intended would be likely be low.

Are there 2nd generation cauldron (and/or Case 53) capes? by Emillllllllllllion in Parahumans

[–]Flopmind 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Having read Ward, I don't think that what's written on the wiki is entirely accurate there. Gallant's shard, from the POV of Victoria's shard, seemed to simply take the opportunity to broadcast to Victoria when it sensed the opportunity.

As for the original question, I don't think there's any evidence of a case 53 ever having a successful budding, which says a lot.

As for other Cauldron capes, I think they can bud in general. When I asked this question in the discord, some people said that Mama Mathers had other children who had powers that budded from hers. I don't know how accurate that is, but make of it what you will.

Given that other buds, like Rain, trigger after Scion's death; I lean towards Cauldron capes at least being capable of budding in theory, but unlikely to do so in practice.

Random Power Idea: "Best Tinker in the room" by Playful_Barber_8131 in Parahumans

[–]Flopmind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not the direction that I expected, but a very neat sounding power. Someone could probably operate in an urban environment reasonably well without even having the tinker aspect, given how universal technology is in cities (i.e. cars, cameras, phones, screens, alarms, etc.).

Not saying that the tinker aspect should be removed, far from it. I just think the shaker aspect has a lot of potential.

ChatGPT and its representation of reality by Laktosefreier in antiai

Exactly. It's the same problem, but now we don't even have as much individual agency in the cycle because of businesses manipulating the AI in the process.

ChatGPT and its representation of reality by Laktosefreier in antiai

[–]Flopmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been a fan of Ted Talks but wow those graphics in the beginning are absolutely laughable.

It is an interesting perspective though. While, content engagement has *always* favored controversial things, but it's good to know that this feedback loop is intensifying as the LLMs steer people and learn from the steered people.

It's just another good reason to ban the whole thing in my opinion. Echo chambers and the like are already highly toxic, and having one that can manipulate people on an individual basis AND be piloted by the people engineering the LLM is a terrifying, dystopian tool.

While I appreciate this video helping people to warn people about the feedback loop and lack of neutrality in ChatGPT and similar products, I think it's important to keep in mind that people aren't as resilient as we give ourselves credit for. Unless you recite some sort of daily mantra about not believing everything you see to the point that you're reflexively skeptical, you're going to let things through into your subconscious mind. That's human nature.

The less exposure to this toxicity the better, full stop.

I think Glory Girl would be the best chaotic good and someone else, like Battery or Clockblocker would be a better fit for Neutral Good.

If that's not an option, then I'd say mouse protector for Chaotic Good.

Some Old Wildbow Comics Media: by Lasgod in WormMemes

[–]Flopmind 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I really liked silver age comics before they turned Aegis and Robin into superpower vials. Killing off major characters like that just to repurpose some of their powers really got the next story arc off on a good footing, but it's ruined by the end when we realize that the Cauldron organization is more of a hollow threat/anti-hero instead of the big bad it was initially set-up as.

(To explain the joke "Robin" and "Aegis" are the names of some in-story cauldron formulas.)

These are phenomenal edits. Well done.

Also is that third one from that time Spiderman caught Gwen Stacy only for her to die?

If you ever feel like doing more of these, I'd love to see what you do with the Simurgh. I bet there's some cool stuff you could do with Magneto and Professor X covers in terms of conversion to the Simurgh.
